I have the BD release for the purposes of owning the Despecialized, and the Despecialized. Frankly, that’s all I’m going to need unless the original cuts ever come out, and at this point, it looks like hell with freeze over before that happens.

Opening titles are the same as we've known them. Episode numbers are in the scrawls and will certainly always be. LucasFilm has not altered the films further than Lucas has to my knowledge, but my digital copies of the Star Wars films -- as they are displayed in my digital locker -- in my menu on iTunes and Vudu -- just say "STAR WARS: [insert title here]" like the OT poster art. Not the films. Just how they're presented in the menus. All I'm saying.

Yes, they debuted on iTunes like that. It's the new simplified titling under Disney-owned LFL.

If you download them to your library you can edit the metadata to put them in order, but if you're streaming from the cloud sadly they're alphabetical by title.

Oh, okay. There you go. Yes, the same thing is showing in my iTunes and VUDU libraries. I believe Disney+ will follow suit once it goes online in November. Thanks for clearing it up. 🙏

I find it amazing that they don't release the original theatrical versions.

Another Bluray release of the Saga isn't what anyone needs or wants. I could care less about whether the Fox logo is there or not. These, and the past several trilogy or individual steel releases are inferior to the boxed set since they don't include special features and cost more. 4K releases are the only thing that will be worth it. Though I bet that whatever covers they use (if they aren't the same as the steels or from previous releases) will probably be the art going forward for 4K since it isn't long until they release 4K. For the new films I prefer the 3D, so with 3D for Rise of Skywalker on bluray and 4K for I-VI, I'll be very happy. I'll be even happier if they released I-III in 3D, but that'll never happen.

Buck....they get it VERY well....but a company that big takes advantage
Disney has always been good about the fandoms.....the amazing quantity and quality of special features on the releases has proven that, the problem is that now that physical media is losing ground, there is less and less reason to offer variety to the people like us or the collector.

I think we're looking at something that will swing back in our favor in the future, the streaming world is volatile and uncertain as we keep seeing it streamline into less and less options, just like cable, internet and phone companies. Physical media will make a big comeback just like vinyl has. THEN we will likely get what we crave, Star Wars: The Ultimate Collection

Disney has put themselves in a dangerous position with the aquisition of FOX
They are beyond a Multimedia Monopoly.....The consumer will only take so much bullying......in the meantime the bootlegs are an amazing option until greed gets the best of the Mouse

They’ve been restoring the theatrical cuts for uhd. I’ve read it on a couple trusted websites so hopefully it’s not BS. They’re coming guys. I’m guessing April/May next year.

Since Last Jedi is on UHD and to see how quickly Disney is updating 4K titles this year like Marvel films, I’d say it’s looking good

Not sure I would term the Fox acquisition "dangerous", I think they had no choice, really, once Fox put themselves up for sale when Comcast already tried a takeover of Disney...there's been no love lost between Disney and Universal going all the way back to the late 1920's, it's maybe the biggest media company rivalry in the history of cinema -- Disney took the field and survived, it's more like, "What do we do now?" Not sure Disney even knows.

I won’t be buying these new releases unless there’s something substantially new added (like new bonus features or old features not on the DVDs or existing Blu-rays). Otherwise, easy pass lol.

I think it’s obvious to figure out what these releases will entail if the latest rumors are true.

The September listings will be Disney’s first repackage of the original films to capitalize on the promotion for Episode IX. Easy money.

The Complete Saga set that digitalbits is reporting for next year will be episodes 7-9 along with 4k remasters of 1-6. The OT will be the special editions since they’re the official canonical versions whether we like it or not. Including the theatrical OT would require 3 extra discs and goes against the official continuity of the saga, and seems unlikely that something as monumental as the theatrical OT would be included as mere “bonus features”. I know George did that before on DVD, but that was a deliberate attempt to undermine those cuts with shoddy laserdisc transfers and make the SE look superior. That isn’t comparable to releasing a 4K restoration on UHD.

If the theatrical versions of the OT ever get released it will have it’s own separate release, not bundled with a “complete saga” set.

How do they go against the continuity though? I’m just a casual Star Wars fans so I legitimately can’t think of how it really would mess it up from the top of my head

Well, I’m simply referring to what Lucasfilm officially recognizes as canon and how the saga is intended to be watched, which includes the special editions of the OT. Including the theatrical OT in a complete saga set would go against that sentiment and George’s approved versions of 1-6.

But for an uniniated viewer, the main thing I can think of from the theatrical versions that would conflict with the movie continuity is the original Emperor in TESB. And there’s still the chance that prequel Anakin’s likeness will be used in Episode IX which would further validate the force ghost change in ROTJ.

Trust me, people are gonna watch Star Wars in whatever way they want. Episode numbers be damned. Controlling that is a lost cause.

A billion light years ago, my niece was nine months old and I was thinking what way she should watch them. I suggested a method of how to watch the saga on an IGN message board, it got copied and pasted because Star Wars fans had nothing else really to talk about at the time, you move on with your life, wake up years later and people in the media who have never spoken to me, never written to me, never talked to me at all, no clue who I am...I'm getting cited all over the place. For a stupid message board post about my sister's kid.

Oh, it gets even more absurd. I'm suddenly called "legendary film blogger Ernst Rister" in a newspaper -- guys, I don't even have a blog, they didn't even spell my name right. I laughed my ass off. Total b.s. But the "Ernest Rister Order" is all over the place because of Star Wars fans and that Machete Order website, and nobody even spells my name right. It's a cosmic joke.

NOW WAIT...here's the punchline. I make that post thinking about my niece, who I was raising, and then my nephew right after. How do I show them the Star Wars films without ruining The Empire Strikes Back?

Guess what happened.

My sister and brother in law wound up just showing the Star Wars films to their kids in completely random order, in whatever way they felt like, as in the,"What DVD is closer to me on the shelf, I'm on the phone dealing with crap" Order. I'm in newspapers for a message board post about Star Wars, no one can even get my name right, I wrote the damn thing on a lark thinking about my own sister's kids, and she just grabbed what movie was closer on the shelf to deal with other things.

There's no way of controlling how people are gonna watch these movies. My own sister doesn't listen to me.

Only good thing that came out of that...when my wife and I disagree about a movie, I wink and say, "Remember, you're married to Legendary Blogger Ernst Rister".
