My other thought upon revisiting RETURN OF THE JEDI for the millionth time: of all the crazy changes and fixes Lucas has done to these movies over the decades, you'd think the ONE thing he'd re-do is the Super Star Destroyer crashing into the Death Star. That's got to be the single worst old-school optical effect ever produced for the Saga, and yet it remains. Ack. I thought it was awful back in '83, when I was twelve! I actually find myself wishing they'd change that one shot out in the next go-'round. That could be a spectacular moment, akin to the two Star Destroyers colliding in ROGUE ONE.

Then, thank the maker, it returns to normal high-def in time for the speeder chase.

Drives me nuts. File this under "Can't Wait For The New 4K Releases -- Chapter 1,138".
I'm surprised that LFL didn't say it was another "deliberate creative decision" but yeah, it's a huge error and there are no "source related" problems here as that ain't no giant optical, it literally turns into SD video resolution.

I'd like to see some hugely dramatic shot there too but it's never bothered me like it has some folks. I'd much rather have the various garbage mattes during the space battle FINALLY get corrected, even on 4K83 they're still blatant in some shots. But hey, those Ewoks gotta blink, right George?

Agreed. The flames hitting the roof of ILM's shed and spreading outwards makes me cringe everytime.

I'll need to check this out, I don't think I ever got past "Jedi Rocks" when watching the blu-ray, haha.

It's certainly all in proper hi-def in 4K83......

The speeder-bike chase looks bad. I wish the SE did something to fix it.

4K83 is certainly the way to go. I absolutely love my 4K77, but can't quite be bothered to get 4K83. In many ways, I view RETURN OF THE JEDI as kind of a train wreck of a film, which happens to culminate into a spectacular conclusion. However... rest assured... I never ever... like EVER... watch the abomination that is Jedi Rocks. There's a moment when Jabba says something like "Play that one again" when you can hit the Next Chapter button on your remote and magically skip to "bounty hunter" Leia interrupting the proceedings by bringing in Chewie. It's nice 'n' seamless. I will never again subject my eyeballs to Jedi Rocks, as long as I live.

Oh I don't agree. I think that holds up quite well. But I might be blinded by nostalgia goggles.

I saw it on its original release in 1983 and thought it looked unconvincing. The blue screen work is poor. The model shots are fine.

OK I never noticed this. I've watched Jedi on BD many, many times. Now I can't NOT see it.

Also, why keep the weird fine grain on Revenge of the Sith while scrubbing The Phantom Menace totally clean of all grain?

Oh, and some the backgrounds are so obviously 2D plates it's kinda distracting. They don't move! Like the shots in Episode III of Mace Windu when he has Palpatine pinned in the office window, the window frame behind Mace's head is flat and frozen. I'm sure there are many other examples especially in II and III. The backgrounds get the job done, but aren't very convincing. Overall, though, the CG work in the prequels is quite good.

One thing I don't like about the current Blu-Ray releases is that the opening crawl is in finnish if I use finnish subtitles. Some people might like it but I don't like that at all. I don't think subtitles should affect the movie itself. I'm glad that The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi are not like that on Blu-Ray.

They did remove the matte lines during the speeder chase in the SE AFAIK

Personally I think the speeder chase is one of the great highlights of ROTJ, after slogging through the Jabba & Yoda scenes

My French import of the 4k/3D/Blu Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse set has the comic-book "thought bubbles" in French only on the Blu disc (haven't had the time to watch the 3D version or the 4k disc). Because I love that film so much, I'm tempted to double-dip on the American 4k release (which does not include the 3D version) just for the thought bubbles in English. Will have to check those discs when things calm down over here.

Watched the prequel over the last week and a half and I still feel the same as I always have:

TPM - Saved by McGregor, the pod race, and the lightsaber battle. Otherwise. it's still extremely forgettable.

AOTC - Saved by McGregor and Lee. Literally 2/3rds of the film is an actual cringe-fest.

ROTS - Saved by McGregor and McDiarmid. What makes this one slightly better than the others is that the dialogue is more believable than the first two films.

You'll notice McGregor is the common demoniator in the prequel trilogy, which is why he should get his own Kenobi film.

The Jabba scenes only have the sexy Leia to recommend them. The rest of the film is an endurance test. Definitely the weakest of the three original films.

Didn’t Disney confirm McGregor will be starring in a Kenobi series on Disney+?

YES, that shot is bloody awful!!! But, the explosion of Alderaan in ANH is just as laughable, especially now with Rogue One.
