The strength of the source material very much comes through in the earlier seasons. It slowly erodes and utterly evaporates as the show progresses and the showrunners were left to their own devices.

Don't threadcrap. In other words don't go into a thread about golfing and post "golf sucks" etc. It's unconstructive and it insults people who like golf.

Nonsense. The show needed to dedicate each scene to character dev in the early seasons. There is no need for character dev in the later seasons--plus there was a much bigger budget--so the show pursued more action sequences and epic battle scenes as it approached the end.

One thing becomes clear from re-watching season 1. There were hints of how this would wrap up right from the start. Incredible show in every way.

Just because GM hasn't finished the books doesn't mean he doesn't have the road map, and hasn't had the road map for a long time.

Regarding the bold part, I'll say again that I think that was due mostly to the strength of the source material. Any hints that were laid out in the first season were laid out by GRRM, not the showrunners (someone please correct me if I'm wrong but there was nothing added by the showrunners in this first season to hint at where the series would go that wasn't already in the book). Regarding the "no need for character development" in later seasons, I'm not sure how that relates to my post but I will say that in general I agree with the sentiment. That said, my problem with the last season in particular was that it didn't just stop developing the characters, it flat out mischaracterized nearly all the major players in the series.

I think Season 1 deserves a lot of credit for being a prime example of how to translate a book onto the screen in that it sticks close to the source material and lets some really good actors run with it. There are parts of GoT that will always stand the test of time and I think Season 1 in its entirety always will.

There are probably easier things to do then adapt a book that will probably never be finished in to TV series. Most people don't seem to get that.

There are definitely exceptions (and they tend to be loud) but I think most people get it. Sure it's challenging, but the people who made the show are professionals and it's what they do for a living so I think it's fair for fans to have high expectations. Just because it's hard doesn't mean folks should just shrug it off if they feel that the later seasons were bungled and say "well, they tried their best, but it's just so hard." I know I don't get that kind of benefit of the doubt at my job. I don't like it when folks go to the extreme and say that the entire series is ruined because of the last season, but I also don't think it's any better to dismiss legit complains just because making a show is hard work.

To keep this a bit on topic I'll say that I really liked these transfers and it was fun rewatching the first season as a reminder of just how well it was crafted.

If Star Wars fans can live with the fact that a planet of Teddy Bears destroyed the Empire, then Game of Thrones can live with this.

It was just handled poorly and ruined the show. Season 5 is REALLY rough on a rewatch, I stopped at season 5 during the summer so its not like the finale was the only issue, it just stings more, the cast/fans deserved better.
Other than Aria killing you-know-who, I have no real issues with the plots of the final seasons. Just the execution.

Finished this last night, wow what a great 4k! I can't believe the review only got a 4 on image, same as blu, something is up with the reviewers set up. It looks gorgeous on my calman calibrated c9.

Lol, the teddy bears didn't destroy the empire. They surprised the empire ground forces because they saw them as no threat, much like the British found in the revolutionary war, the US in Vietnam, and the Soviets in Afghanistan. That was the idea behind the ewoks.

My issue is with the lack of "legion of troops" that the emperor boasts about. I mean budget and tech back then so...

They were already developed though, if anything they kept to their characters. This is true especially of one, who was called the mad queen, because she was pushed too far. She wasn't able to come back from the heartbreak/betrayal she faced. Funny how the other queen was never labeled that even after she used dragon fire in the middle of the city

Caps-a-holic shows only minor improvements over the BD and, in some cases, like screenshot #1, looks even worse: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=11935&d2=11934&c=4700.

Meh, stills vs movement, I'll take motion. I tossed in the Whitewalker battle episode on Blu on my vt65 plasma and the 4k on the c9 beats it hands down. No contest.

I’m not really trying to smack talk the 4K (though the aspects where the BD literally look better than the 4K are perplexing and lamentable) but just merely answer your question.

Using caps isn't really viable though, imo. True, I didn't watch all on hd then on 4k or better yet side by side. I do agree there are source limitations and nothing is perfect

Let's not disregard potential HDR to SDR conversion issue too. If you care enough, best to pop in the 4K disc and the bluray to compare those specific scenes.

I only watched the 4K once or twice but I don't really recall that scene looking dull and smooth like that.

Got this and season 8 for Christmas. Binged about 7 episodes yesterday and thought the PQ and AQ we’re equally excellent. The extra detail is apparent and the use of height channels really adds to the experience.

Sorry to bump this, but is it just me or is the packaging for this release terrible? The hubs don't securely hold the discs and the disc label art is very amateurish/low quality as if printed with a lightscribe.
