And you're right that they no longer label the new cuts "Special Edition," although Lucas has since changed them even more, due to there being different cuts for the VHS release, DVD release, Blu-ray release, and now 4K Disney+. The cuts are no longer the 1997 SE, although they incorporate those changes.

Really, at this point, unless it says otherwise, you can safely assume you're getting an altered cut. When the Limited Edition DVDs came out, the cut on the 2nd disc was specifically labeled "original theatrical version."
When Lucasfilm was contacted about the non-anamorphic crap that they put out, they referred to the “Special Editions” as representing “George’s vision” and therefore being the definitive cuts. They aren’t officially called the Special Editions very often, but they still are occasionally.

Believe it or not there are very casual movie goers who saw the original versions before and didnt notice the changes in 1997.

There are even people who think the original scene shot with a human actor as Jabba was in the film during it's original release, either because they have a faulty memory and saw the scene somewhere else, or people who probably grew up with the SE and assumed it had been included.

https://heroichollywood.com/star-war...saga-set-leak/

27 discs seems like a lot until you realize that split over 9 films, that's only 3 discs each movie, and if it's UHD Blu-ray, the means the 3 discs for each film are likely:
  • UHD Blu-ray of feature film
  • Blu-ray of feature film
  • Blu-ray of extras for film

The Jabba scene was shown in the 1983 documentary "Star Wars: The Making Of A Saga". Which was widely shown on PBS stations (and later HBO) during the 1980's.

That is the most likely explanation.

I'd rather they keep the damn Blu-ray disks. I'm buying a 4k disk, I don't want or need the Blu-ray.

I really hate that style of packing too. It won't fit on a damn shelf with the spine out.

The upcoming “Skywalker Saga” set’s packaging looks very much like the Harry Potter “Hogwarts Collection,” which while huge and awkward, is quite a nice package.

The Jabba scene wasn't shown in its entirety in Making of a Saga though. It's been shown in bits and pieces in various shows and media over the years. Someone posted a fully reassembled form of the scene from about a dozen different sources and posted it on Youtube:

Human memory is notoriously unreliable. Due to the way the mind uses associations for memories, it's very easy for later experiences, and even later suggestions, to overwrite the original memories. So let's say after watching AotC you're trying to remember a particular line in the movie. However, your memory isn't exact, you only have a vague memory of what the line is. No matter, your brain will reconstruct the line based on what you can remember, and what makes sense to you. Now that you've formed an exact line, you feel like you're "remembering" the exact line from the movie. If you now repeat your recreated line a lot, it gets more and more solidified in your brain as the line that was actually stated.

This issue is compounded with Star Wars due to the fact that George Lucas is known to have endlessly fiddled with the first 6 films. So normally, for a movie if you rewatch it and the line is different from what you remember, especially in such minor ways as "your first/an" and "the/this," you'd naturally assume you misremembered it. However, for Star Wars, when rewatching it, the not entirely unreasonable reaction is instead that it must've been changed. In the case of these two particular lines, it appears this reaction is factually incorrect: these lines weren't changed from the film theatrical version. But it is easy to see why some may have reached that incorrect conclusion.

I believe the Jabba scene was the only one they did notice. And they might have also noticed the Sy Snootles duet in ROTJ.

I honestly think they should do a blu-ray set and a 4K set that does NOT include blu-rays. The supposed price in Canadian is a lot to ask for.

Well, that's the price for the Best Buy exclusive set. There may be a standard set that's cheaper.

The digitalbits reports that there will be separate Blu-ray and DVD box sets (18 discs each):
https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/m...ts/121919-0930

Amazon UK has the Blu-ray set for £65, and Zavvi has it for USD $95:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B082WXD4ZH/
https://www.zavvi.com/blu-ray-and-dv.../box-sets.list

I understand those wanting a UHD version that doesn't cost $250, but the 9 extra Blu-ray discs are a minimal incremental cost, maybe adding $10 in cost to a UHD set. You're really paying a premium for the UHD versions, and with the Best Buy set, possibly some limited-edition exclusivity.
