The writing is terrible for several reasons: It not only gives a ridiculous amount of screentime towards b-plots but at least one of them actively contradicts its own moral (Poe/Holdo). It doesn't have a consistent tone and wildly oscillates between being a serious drama to a wacky and family-fun adventure comedy. For one character (Finn), it just completely scraps his established character and forces him to literally just repeat his arc from the previous movie. Many plot beats are essentially a repeat of V the way VII repeats IV. Any opportunity for compelling narratives that arise from the couple of legitimately interesting "subversive" story decisions is immediately taken off the table (Snoke dies, but nothing really changes whatsoever in Kylo or Rey because of it).

The pacing is a huge issue too - it's completely sluggish and lacks energy for most of the movie, which is fine if it's using that time to adequately develop the characters, but it doesn't.

The direction is atrocious. Things that should be majestic and impactful, like Leia using the Force for the first time onscreen, induce laughter. The fight scenes have no dramatic tension whatsoever and enemies are easily-defeated (Finn yelling "hey." to Phasma before hitting her and she randomly falls through the floor lol).

All of this is off the top of my head.

Now, you may be able to see past all this, and there are certainly elements of the movie I like. And more power to you if you can enjoy it with relatively few reservations.

One thing I've noticed, though, is that TLJ defenders generally like to hurl insults rather than defend the movie on its merits. Curious. I think in light of all these issues you're painting with a hugely broad brush to say that critics of the movie are "one-dimensional".
Such a good post.

The bolded part is the thing that amazes me to no end. This aspect was lost on 80-90%+ of movie watchers. I've even had arguments with people on here in the TLJ thread regarding it. A lot of people did not understand that this was the first time that Leia used the force on-screen. It was a monumental occasion.

man you TLJ lovers are an odd bunch. Can't even handle being confronted with criticisms for the movie.

Maybe they did and it just didn’t screw with their delicate internal balance.

The UOTs are also available on Amazon if you wish to get them. And the price isn't much more than that Hobbit book. So there's no need for complaining then, is there?

I've seen the changes and I'm ok with it. It's not something that will prevent me from seeing the movies. They probably make 45 minutes or less in the whole trilogy (though I'm not sure exactly, as I haven't timed it myself). So it doesn't bother me. But then I have bigger fish to fry and don't have time to worry about this.

There’s also less of an HDR application compared to those films.
Doubtful, but whatever cranks your Honda.

Every movie in the MCU is fan fiction as well seeing as they're not from the mind of the creator/creators. Same goes for Superman and Batman as well. How many movies based on characters are from the mind of the creators, yet turned out to be excellent movies?

SHHHHHH... Don't tell that to the pissed off fans hating on The Last Jedi.

In all seriousness though, That is a great point to be brought up. People keep forgetting a lot of about the original trilogy in their blind hate (or what it seems like anyway) of the sequel trilogy. As though George Lucas would've done any better. I swear I think if George had written and directed these new movies, the hate would be just the same. It's amazing how many people have changed their view of George nowadays.

As serious as JJ was reheating New Hope in the microwave and said after here you go Rian, stick Empire in there pal. Rian gave the microwave the middle finger. Then went about doing as much violence to the story and Star Wars in general. Why? Because there was zero creative capital left in Lucas Star Wars legacy.

You don't get it, most other people don't get it. Nor have they read The Hero With A Thousand Faces most of them.

The 4K 'masters' they're using on Disney+ don't look horrific or anything to that degree. Just not good. And certainly not to the standard that they should be held to considering the magnitude of this franchise's reach--and influence. These should be some of the best looking discs on ANY format they're released on--but again, if Disney uses these same masters on disc, I can't wait to come back in here a few months from now and watch people voice the same exact criticisms that myself and others had observed through the Disney+ streams.

I feel like no matter how you try and articulate these points to people, there will always be a small pocket that have developed Stockholm syndrome to Star Wars and Disney, and will therefore defend them and how these films look, to a fault.

I was even surprised by the post-processing effects they added to the prequels. There's some definite noise reduction going on, which as you pointed out, can present some smeary-looking images.

To use a comparison as I did previously, if people were bothered by the transfers for 'Iron Man' and 'Thor' (which a good portion of people were) then they aren't going to like how these films translate to UHD, either.

Again, not unless Disney go back and use entirely new 4K masters with no DNR or EE.
That bolded portion isn’t a representation of me.

Second, I’ve only ever watched the DVDs of the OT and PT so seeing them on Disney+ as I never owned the Blu-ray’s was a real eye opener in sharpness and image quality.

Also, I haven’t seen the 4K UHD transfer of Iron Man. So I wouldn’t know any better. Thanks for making me understand.

I'm so glad this thread has turned into yet another obsessive discussion about TLJ. So unexpected.

Are you asking whether I think Rian Johnson intentionally sabotaged Star Wars with a bad movie, or are you suggesting that my problems with the movie can be attributed to my wanting the "status quo" of the saga preserved, if there ever was such a thing?

Maybe my wording was a bit unclear. I meant same as the US artwork. Best Buy exclusive in the States and Canada. Amazon exclusive in UK.

My former post corrected.

I don't think it's fair to characterize my numerous explicit reasons (which still await direct responses) for disliking a particular movie as "blind hate" for the sequel trilogy.

Where did you get what I said as a characterization or attack on you specifically? I didn't mention a single person in my post.
