You can tell that this is just spin coming from a guy who didn't have any say over a decision that was made for him. Nothing new in the world of corporate politics.

The BLU-RAY association would have had to delay releasing the format for an entire a year if every BLU-RAY player was going to have PIP and BD-LIVE. Interactive web features are a nice to have but are a minor feature. Picture and Sound quality is the most important feature in a HDTV optical format with movie selection running a close second.
The HD-DVD format had no more then a 3 month head start when launching the format. This was to short of window for HD-DVD to become the winner. If the BLU-RAY launch would have been delayed 12+ months in order to get PIP and BD-LIVE features then HD-DVD might have one the war.
Interactive web features was tried on a select few DVD standalone players and it was a total failure. All standalone DVD players in production do not offer web features and the DVD format is a success. If one wants web features on the DVD format they can stick a DVD into a PC DVD-ROM drive to see web features on select DVD titles.

LOL, 50GB is overrated? That's why the Blades of Glory BD was going to have a TrueHD track and the HD-DVD wasn't. Or the Face/Off BD was going to have more HD extras then the HD-DVD. It's pretty obvious that Paramount was leaning Blu, so the desperation buy out move came about.

Truth is, there is NO logical explanation as to why they went HD DVD exclusive other than the money. All of the Paramounts executives can come for the next two weeks and one by one tell me how they did their market research and clearly see HD DVD to be a superior format for mass adoption, but it would all be bullshit.
The real reason, the ONLY reason they did it is because someone flashed a nice chunk of change in front of them and their greed kicked into a high gear.

This last sentence sums up all the BS. A broad spectrum would have been to maintain support of both formats. He'd have been better off holding the mic up to his arse - then I would have believed all his gas.

My favorite part is how they like HD-DVD because it has better support for "Managed Copy". Yeah, right, have the studios /ever/ wanted to help people make copies of movies? Ever?

honestly he made good points. problem is that it would have been a valid excuse for this move 1 year ago. now its just an excuse. and to say the extra space is vital to having all the features people want, then to say that its not necessary we can throw another disc at it is just bull.

When did anyone start caring about this nonsense!? Picture in ****ing Picture....what about we start with an excellent single picture first??

HD-DVD is like a good looking hooker without a vagina; all glitz and glam with her fancy PiP...

Till you get her home and realize that after the Blow Jay you aren't going to actually get to go all the way, because quite honestly, its a hooker without a vagina...

and by without a vagina I mean horribly low bitrates, shallow storage capacity, cheap 1080i players that don't all upconvert, pretend uncompressed audio, and awful VC-1 transfers.

but she looks good when you hook her up to the internet and can take a survey right? bullshit...

While I think Alan Bell has some points, I find it interesting that he was involved in developing HD DVD and some of their specs when he was with Warner, based on my read of what Amir posted on the insider's thread on AVS. Alan Bell has been with Paramount about a year and it looks to me like when he was praising the HD DVD people in this interview, he was at least partially referring to a team he was on. So, it doesn't seem that surprising to me that he would prefer their package. I see the team that finalized the HD DVD specs as one that did some good things, but also chose a 1.0x spin rate that limited their bandwidth much more than if they had chosen a 1.5x spin rate. And I don't think it would have been hard to go with a higher spin rate at that time, and now would likely be much more difficult.
