I captured some direct quotes from Peter Jackson.

They are exactly the same as you are used to seeing them. Except they look as if they were done today rather than 20 years ago.

Interesting what he's saying here. There are definitely changes that have been made.

Did he actually say filmic? I can't remember if he did. Then that would support the faux 65mm theory I have concerning the grain field.

He does surely realize not many people really care about how Consistent the films are in terms of looks right? Mostly between the Two Trilogies.

Maybe this is why Nolan prefers to master from a timed IP! That way the thread can always gravitate towards, and settle on, "at least that's the way it looked in theaters!"

The green tint is gone but the steelbook comes with a bonus sheet of green cellophane you can tape over your TV screen to replicate the look of that old release.

Some of what he's saying here is terrifying, but then I remember James Cameron talking about removing grain from Aliens. So I'll reserve judgment til I watch these over the weekend.

I heard if you poke tiny holes in the cellophane it also mimics very fine film grain.

I was excited that my copy came in today...until I realized that disc one of The Two Towers Extended was all scratched up in one area. Now I have to get a replacement. Where’s quality control on a set at this price??!

Le sigh.

Which video is this? Link please.

He did say he thought through out the process they looked more consistent. Meaning Jackson never went in with any intention of creating greater visual consistency.

I think his meaning is just that the results of 4K and HDR have meant to his eyes there isn't as noticeable a technological gap of time between them.

You watch The Fellowship it's abundantly clear Jackson was trying to be as faithful as possible to his original 2K presentation, with some tweaks

But don't take it from me. Just keep listening to OutOfboose and Jack Freeman. They know everything about these presentations from a couple of medium and close shots caped from god knows where, on god knows what.

The actual quote was:

Sure leaves me with the impression that the LOTR Trilogy was DNRed to make it look more like a contemporaneously digitally shot movie, ala the Hobbit Trilogy.

Got my steelbooks in they came in a box but the tin case was still dinged a little, I like the individual cases and might skip the tin case altogether. Don't like the way the extended discs are loaded in cases on the right side tho, bottom disc has a slot to slide into and top disc is tilted so as not to hit bottom tray tab I guess. Just more opportunity to scratch the discs imo.

All the discs looked good but won't be watching till this wkd or next week.

Conforming The Lord of the Rings to The Hobbit...

Ah, The Hobbit. The gift that keeps on giving.

Yeah as Geoff said I think he soften Fellowship so it was more authentic. Then on TTT and ROTK, he maybe decided to keep it where he thought it benefited certain shots, things he couldn't achieve as he wanted in post production back then.

I think TTT will ultimately win out as most divisive for it's colour grading.
