Ive done both, now it specifically lays down after reading a article showing thermo pictures of the ps3 in both modes and it appeared obvious that the heat raised and thus the top became hotter then it would normally be.

This is kind of an old link but I thought I would share it.

Thermal Images

Looks like the horizontal position is the cooler of the two but I still like it vertical.

I don't think the 'thermal pics' are very persuasive. The horizontal unit is shown from the front, while the vertical unit is shown from the back. Given that the PS3 ejects air from the back, it will undoubtedly show as being warmer from that side.

Not that I am not open to any scientific discovery on the issue, I just don't think that the pictures I have seen are conclusive to any degree.

+1 the pictures are taken in a way to suggest it is best to place the PS3 horizontal. It would probably run cooler standing up because all the heatsinks would be at the top and instead of the fan pulling the heat fursther into the system it can just blow it out from the top straight away. Doesn't matter though which way cools better the PS3 runs fine for both. Just clean it's insides with canned air and don't add any third party cooling onto it and your PS3 will stay cool for a very long time.
