Since anyone can easily provide the firmware updates and they are extremely easy to backup I have no issue with putting firmware updates on a USB drive.

But anyway, what would you have done if the PS5 did require a 1 time internet activation to play any games with no workaround? Assume after that you can upgrade firmware via game discs/USB.

If it was literally one time and could never again be in a state that would require an internet connection then there wouldn't be an issue. By the time that Sony stopped supporting the console every console would have been activated.

If it was like the Xbox One and Xbox Series X then I wouldn't have bought one. With both of those consoles there are no offline profiles so you have to connect to Microsoft's servers every time you want to create a profile. That means that after Microsoft stops supporting those consoles it will be extremely easy to accidentally turn the system into a brick. If someone deleted their profile or did a system refresh before selling their system then the buyer would be unable to use it.

I won't buy or use any console (or Blu-ray/DVD player) that requires ongoing support to function or can easily be put into a state that requires ongoing support.
