Dolby Vision versions will update more frequently on your display than on your 4K player. My LG OLED C2 gets OS updates every few weeks, and DV updates with about every second or third OS update.

If there are issues playing back DV disks it's possible that could be fixed with a DV version update. For the LG they aren't seperate updates, part of the entire OS update bundle.

[Show spoiler]Here is a breakdown of the available "Picture Type" settings:
Normal: This is the standard, all-purpose setting. It provides a neutral, natural-looking image that is suitable for most content.
Cinema: This mode is designed to replicate the color and tone of a commercial movie theater. It typically adjusts the color temperature and contrast for a warmer, more film-like appearance.
Fine Cinema: A more refined version of the "Cinema" mode. This setting is intended for serious movie enthusiasts, offering an even more accurate and subtle film-like presentation.
Retro Cinema: This mode applies a stylistic, retro look to the image. It is meant to evoke the feeling of classic films and is not intended for accurate or realistic reproduction.
Animation: Tailored for animated films and shows, this mode enhances the colors and contrast to make them more vibrant and vivid.
Live: This setting is best for live events, such as concerts or sports. It is tuned to produce a brighter, sharper, and more dynamic image to match the "live" feel of the original content.

Out of curiosity, what's everyone else view on these? I keep going back to "normal," but "fine cinema" sounds like the best approach outside of "normal."

The things they mentioned are underlying issues with the player's implementation, not the display's. Certain issues were fixed in the previous updates to the player, like the freezing at a key moment in the UK Knives Out UHD when played in DV, and the flickering on the Shaun the Sheep Farmageddon UK UHD when played in DV. There's nothing that even the latest firmware update on a TV can do if the incoming signal is pre-borked by the player.

And kids, if you want the purest signal out of the Pannys that they can manage (I say that because there's no source direct feature) then just leave them on normal for picture mode.

So is this setting for SDR content only, where is the setting?

edit: nevermind found the info, good to know I will keep on normal

Yes, I was asleep when you asked, so I wasn't able to reply earlier. It would be interesting to know exactly what this function does when used. But, I've got a feeling this is just the players local contrast function as it does seem to sort of work in that way. If it's actually that, than people got additional settings. Since most TVs usually just have 3 for local contrast. Though, most would use the lowest setting, if at all, because the higher settings tend to ruin the picture (most notably on animation features).

It should be set on "normal" as default.
So, unless you selected Cinema, Fine Cinema, Retro Cinema, Animation, or Live, it should be on "normal" for picture type.

You have to play SDR content like a bluray or DVD then hit the option button and a menu, similar to the HDR optimizer menu while playing HDR content, will pop up and it's there. Never knew about it some said they preferred Cinema or Fine cinema but I'll stick with normal for purest signal as Geoffy said.

My LG C5 had a software update and now I'm seeing dark grey bars on Dolby Vision 4K discs with my UB820. HDR10 looks fine with pitch black bars. Don't know if the update caused this?

Has anyone else experienced this? My old LG B7 had this issue until either LG or Panasonic released an update, don't remember who but it did get fixed after a while.

EDIT: streaming is not affected, the bars are pitch black as expected.

(If it was the television that had the s/ware update then may be better to ask in the specific thread for that tv model- here or on the extensive AVSForums forums)

Will do, I realised I forgot to put the most crucial detail. It is Dolby Vision that is affected by the grey bars, not HDR10 and Dolby Vision on AppleTV has black bars as it's supposed to.

Well, I just came across the first Blu-ray that played flawlessly on my Oppo, but not on the UB9000:

I cleaned it to see if that would help, but it didn't, and does sadly have some faint scratches. But one that goes from top to bottom on one side.

Hey y’all, new to figuring out the HDR10+ / Dolby Vision game.

Wondering if this has come up or if anyone can help with this.

HDR10 isn’t showing up on my Samsung tv when viewing 4k stuff through my Panasonic player. Hdr10+ does show up though through streaming.

I have been troubleshooting this all week and have not had any luck. Have legit tried everything, unplugging, made sure I had the right hdmi cable, switched ports, made sure the input was on, tried turning it off, made sure hdr10+ is turned on on Panasonic etc. Literally been scouring the internet trying to find a solution. But it always shows just hdr in the settings bar on samsung.

And when I turn hdr10+ off on panasonic it still is just in hdr, so turning it on and off hasn’t made a difference. Feel like I’m getting the short end of the stick by it not working.

Very good. For the first few years I had this player I used it with a 1080p Epson projector and it looked gorgeous. You will have to make some tweaks though or it is going to look very dark.

It shows "just HDR" as in it's displaying HDR content on your screen? If so, that is HDR10. I don't know how Samsung displays settings and input specs, but there isn't anything less than HDR10. "Just" HDR would be that base layer, unless I'm misreading what you're saying.

Gotcha. Thank-you very much for the response. Yeah i think I was under the impression that hdr and hdr10 are two diff things.

I just tried popping in the mubi 4k of benedetta and that showed up as hdr10+ so I was at least happy to see that.

Yeah when i bought the Samsung the salesperson mistakenly told me it had dolby vision when i asked. I didnt realize at the time that there was this whole format war going on.

Wish these companies like Criterion, Arrow, etc would just have both on their releases. Would make life alot easier for all involved, as I’m sure there are many others like me who are currently in hdr10+ jail.

Shot in the dark here but I've been having issues with the 4K bluray of Promising Young Woman. Even got a brand new disc after the first one froze up and I still get glitching and freezing. No other 4K discs have had this issue so I know it isn't my specific player. I know this is a MOD disc from universal so I'm wondering if these MOD discs have issues on certain players or the quality control on these discs are just that bad.
