Can't wait for the Top 10, Romulus. In the meantime, don't make him rush like hell as he is meticulously counting down every movie on our lists one by one. In other words: wait patiently (CZAR, that means you).

Remake? Isn't that the first time it's been put to film?

Starting with the top ten, I want everyone to notice just how many points some of these films are getting.

10.

Dawn of the Dead (1979)
Directed by George A. Romero (2)
146 Points

9.

Psycho (1960)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock (1)
187 Points

8.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Directed Jonathan Demme (1)
216 Points

7.

Jaws (1975)
Directed by Steven Spielberg (2)
221 Points

6.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Directed by Wes Craven (2)
279 Points

wow, pretty good 6-10. Dawn (78) is one of my all-time favorites: not your typical horror, but a merciless attack on american greed and materialism, achieved with devastating success. silence is another gem, with possibly the greatest all-time vilian of movie history.

my prediction for 5-1:

5: Alien
4: The Thing
3: The Exorcist
2: Halloween
1: The Shining

Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, and Jaws are all excellent.

Without mentioning any spoilers, think about the first time you saw Psycho. We take the revelations for granted now, but some of those things were shocking on the first viewing. I'm not scared by it, but I appreciate all the work that went into it. Had anything been done that was quite like that in 1960? Unlike many of the movies on the list, Psycho could actually happen.

It works for the same reason The Dark Knight works. The main villain could exist.

As much as I thing they are great movies, I've never considered Jaws, Alien or Silence Of The Lambs "Horror" movies. Alien = Sci Fi, Jaws = Action/Adventure, Silence Of The Lambs = Thriller. Just my opinion though. Great list, I've seen em all.

PS, George A Romero didn't direct Silence Of The Lambs

Ridley Scott himself said he wanted this movie to be like a "haunted house" movie in outer space. (except instead of ghosts, he had an alien).

Although Silence of the Lambs is in my top 10 of all time I don't think I would call it horror. Seems more suspense like....

And by the way, fantastic job putting this together, Romulus. The suspense of this list is killing me!!

I agree, but still a fantastic flick that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is also considered my favorite movie on my book, with Hannibal Lecter my favorite horror villain.

Must of been a typo or something Romulus, but the original Friday the 13th came out in 1980.

Sorry I keep getting these dates or directors wrong. Every time I unveil the next set I just copy the format from the previous post and change everything. Looks like I just made 2 quick over sights.

5-3 here shortly.

The discussion of genre has been all over multiple threads. While I may disagree with you, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. Check the others threads if you are interested about the discussion on the matter though.
