I don't think I even own an optical cable, been using HDMI since day one. LPCM always results in 2 channel 48 KHz output from my PS3. It's not the receiver because the PS3's own on-screen display confirms the signal info shown by the receiver. I tried to turn off all of the 2-channel output options in the PS3's menus but naturally it won't allow me to disable the lowest quality settings.

which receiver are you using? (some receivers do not process HDMI audio and could be reason youre getting 2.0 PCM)

I'm using a Yamaha RX-V3800. It's not an HDMI audio processing problem, it decodes multi-channel audio over HDMI just fine ... so long as it *is* decoding the audio (i.e., the PS3 is set to 'bitstream' rather than 'LPCM'). The problem occurs when the PS3 is allowed to decode the audio, it will not output anything other than 2-channel sound as confirmed by the PS3's own OSD and by the Yamaha's signal information function. It may well be pilot error but I'm leaning towards it being a glitch with the PS3 that isn't allowing me to force multi-channel output via LPCM.

I would like to know what should the audio settings be on the PS3 using HDMI when not using a sound system? Should I use the low 2 channel setting or should I use the higher 2 channel settings? Thanks.

If you're not using a sound system, the settings shouldn't matter right? Is it going to the TV? Then both settings will be heard in 2.0 stereo, I think.

I am just using the tv speakers and was wondering what 2 channel options should be be checked marked the low settings or higher settings?

I had this same problem with, ironically enough a Sony receiver. Then when I switched to a optical cable and Liner PCM it decodes all codecs just fine for the most part. The sound isn't what it could be, but I am looking into a new A/V receiver.

I'm trying here..........i'm new!!
I need the common knowledge stuff because I’m ignorant to this stuff and some people keep you there and sell you crap which is unfortunate. I WANT THE BEST BLU EXPERIENCE POSSIBLE, although I do not know what it really looks like or what it really sounds like but this is what I have at the moment,
TV - 52” LG LCD 1080p (what is the diff b/w p & i)
PLAYER - PS3 (don’t really know if it is 20, 40, or 60)
AMP – sourced by installer due to ignorance he said he could get it cheaper but it was in fact more expensive than most stores– YAMAHA ATR 6130 (HDMI RECIVER) 5.1 – he then replaced it with his own (second hand, four years old) “old school” receiver SONY STRDE598S 5.1
I wasn’t aware that he was replacing it with a second hand when I asked for a new.
SPEAKERS – sourced by the installer because “as above” NEOTECH CEILING SPEAKERS (BOTTOM OF RANGE – RATED “GOOD”)
I am sure that he is a decent guy, don’t want to rubbish him but I have noticed now that the picture is not as sharp as it was with the first receiver – is this my imagination?
I will see if he will exchange the receiver and either give me my money back so I could get today’s technology (which was what I was wanting) and get myself a hdmi, zone2 7.1 receiver at an affordable price even if I have to spend up to $1500 but I need my money back. What do you suggest I buy?
Will I get the best blu experience with this amp? If I’m stuck with it?
Thanking you in advance
