Riser For TV? - Blu-ray Forum

I have a potential problem with my HT setup. I own a Samsung ln46a630, which has a slightly shorter stand than some other Samsungs. I am getting my Pioneer SC-25 and a Polk CS10 front speaker which will complete my 5.1 setup. However, upon seeing the CS10, I believe it will block part of my screen because of its height.

With that said, does anyone know of a quality center speaker thats shorter than the CS10 (7'') or a place that I can buy something to elevate my TV by 2-3 inches that won't look cheap? I hope to mount my TV eventually, but I don't want to potentially mess up my new condo wall by doing it myself and don't want to spend a lot (right now) on getting a professional mount done.

I would suggest looking on Amazon. You get full specs and buyers opinions and critiques/ratings of the items.

I made one out of plywood for my TV before I wall-mounted it. Spent about $15 for a half sheet of plywood, $3 for a peice of 3/4 trim for edging and $2 for a can of black spray paint.

I would suggest what Rob71 did......as you can see, it can be done easily and for little money. It looks pretty good to.

Also notice that he maintained an "opening" in the TV riser (no back to it), this is smart to maintain the speaker's proper sound and sonic resonance, because if it was too close an enclosed riser (ar any kind of enclosure), the center channel could have some coloration issues with the dialog.

It can be done, but some don't like it for aesthetic reasons, getting it to be directed down towards your ears can be an issue, and your front soundstage imaging could suffer too when there is some kind of audio "sweep" across the 3 front speakers. You may find that getting it set up properly above the TV to be more difficult than to simply get some wood and to build the TV riser. I think the member Ozzman did this and simply covered it with something black to blend in with his stand......you should check out his gallery.

I have the same issue and just found this company that will build a custom stand. I have not contacted them yet, but am definitely considering having them build a riser for my 50" plasma.

I have the same issue and recently ran accross this company that builds risers to order. They state their risers will hold up to 100 pounds. I am thinking about ordering one myself.

Those look nice, but your putting an expensive TV on it. I'd recommend finding one like I made a few posts up. Adding the bottom piece really adds to the strength and rigidity of the unit. If you decide on those ask how the vertical pieces are attached. If they dont use dowels or have some other form of support, I'd think twice. They may support 100 lbs. of weight, but what about a bump from the side? Something to think about anyway.

When I originally made this I had a cheap HTIB and my center fit inside with an inch or so of space. When I upgraded to my Polks, I just used a jigsaw to cut an area out that allowed me to slide the center under, but still kept the strength of the unit intact.

Thanks Rob. If I was handy enough and had the tools, I would probably take a crack at building one myself. The one you built looks great. I did email the company selling the riser's online regarding the construction per your prompting. Here is the reply:

"The sides of the Standard Desk Risers and the Arched Leg Style display stands are attached with a combination of dowel pins, glue, and pocket joiner technology which utilizes specially designed wood screws. I have found that this combination of joiner techniques have raised the weight bearing capability to 200 lbs. minimum."

It looks like these are pretty solid risers. As soon as I am ready to re-configure my HT at my new house, I will probably order one and post some pics after everything is complete.

If they are using pocket screws and dowels with glue, I'd feel more confident about using one. The dowels and glue make any lateral movement less likely especially when combined with the pocket screws. Just to give you an idea this wall cabinet I built for my Blu-rays is assembled using pocket screws and glue.

Right now it holds 220-230 Blu-rays plus some DVD TV series. So it has a fair amount of weight and it's held up just fine.

When you attatched the 2 side pieces to the top and bottom of the riser did you dado joint them.Then glue and nail them? I am curious cause I am gonna need to make one. Thinking I will use oak though.

what kind of wood did you use? Looks like cherry? The reason I need to do this is cause my center channel speaker doesn't have a place to go. It was on top of my Sony Wega tv for years. With the new 42" Panasonic TC-P42G10 that I just ordered I don't think I can put the center channel speaker on the tv base because the speaker is 6" high. I think I will use some trim screws that I have. They are as thin as finish nails.
