I agree completely. If you don't understand the native language of the film, put the subtitles on. There is never a need for dubbing. I want to find out who actually voted for dubbing, let's sniff them out! I'll get the pitchforks and torches!

Do you remember a show in the mid 80's called Mad Movies? They took old movies and dubbed in new dialog. I sort of remember a Shirley Temple one that was hillarious.

My only exception to watching dubbed movies include the Godzilla and Chinese Karate films of the 60s and 70s. I love watching how bad it is to try and match these languages with english. (mouth has stopped moving, but the diologue continues)

I, for one, can't believe so many people said "Original w/Subtitles" over it depends.
If it's a movie I own and can watch freely, definitely subtitles. If I have one crack at a movie, I miss a lot of the picture if I'm reading the subtitles, especially if they are of rapid speech. You aren't really seeing the movie if you spend half of it reading. This is especially true for Animation. Of course I guess this isn't really "It depends on the movie" so much as "it depends on the situation". |

FMA even makes sense to be in English, because they are ostensibly speaking English in the show. All text is in English and it is definitely a Western European sort of country that the story takes place in. And for FLCL, they even went to the trouble of including some of the Japanese creative staff in finding English voice talent who would match what the had already Japanese delivered. Haruko and Mamimi are especially good at nailing it in my opinion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubbing_(filmmaking) ADR. Also: Spaghetti Westerns. Last edited by Afrobean; 12-19-2009 at 05:03 AM. |

I haven't seen Passion of the Christ, but I do like the idea of them speaking Hebrew. It's more faithful. And speaking of faithful....as I mention before on an Inglourious Basterds thread (which I'm guessing is where the OP of this thread got the idea of creating this thread) does everyone expect the Germans and French to be speaking English during WWII? I do like subtitles when someone is speaking in a foreign language and it's either historically or geographically accurate. (Besides....how weird would it have been if every alien/creature/robot in Star Wars spoke English? |

wow Brandon, i have to say i'm a little shocked. however, a lot of my buddies still detest subs and i did for a while. i felt the way you did, but then i actually sat down and watched a film with subs on. and guess what i realized? after about 5 mins into the film, i didnt even realize i was reading + it was WAY more engrossing hearing the natural language
