I've personally been buying combo packs for a while even though I only got a Blu-ray player this past Christmas, I knew I'd eventually upgrade to Blu-ray so I figured why buy the DVD and waste money by rebuying it on Blu-ray. So I agree that studios should start doing combo packs ONLY, think of how much money they'd save on resources alone, which we know they love their money or they wouldn't be wanting to re-release Avatar in theaters less than 6 months after it originally was released just to get more money, regardless of extended or not.

since FOX isn't releasing a 3D Blu-ray yet, does that mean that the extended release in general isn't happening? Unless I read it wrong, it was going to be a 3D extended version, but it had to have had 2D as well right? I couldn't care less about 3D, the movies I have that are 3D have never been and will never be watched. If there's going to be a definite extended release, I'm not going to buy this.

From the LA Times:

Quote:
Fox is hoping "Avatar" will make home-video history, rivaling the fastest-selling title ever, "The Dark Knight," which sold 3 million copies its first day in stores in December 2008 (600,000 of those on Blu-ray). CinemaScore, which has been doing consumer research with the Blu-ray format since October 2008, reports that "purchase intent" among consumers is higher for "Avatar" than any previous title. Also, Fox research suggests that a significant percentage of surveyed moviegoers said they plan to use the arrival of "Avatar" as an impetus to switch to the Blu-ray format.

"Avatar" opened in theaters on Dec. 18 and has grossed $2.6 billion worldwide. Landau said he believes the film will continue to do well at theaters and find a different sort of success on home video. He dismissed the suggestion that the 3-D epic will be cramped in the far smaller 2-D home-theater setting.

"There are details that you can see on the Blu-ray that are just amazing," Landau said. "And the reason the movie has done so well isn't because of the 3-D, it's because of the story and the messages and the imagination. The way I view the Blu-ray is a chance for people to go back to Pandora."

I and I suspect almost everyone here (except the haters) will be picking this up day one! hopefully there won't be too much about how folks are not gonna buy it because they are gonna hold out for the 3D version and no 3D is a deal breaker, let's face it. this was a piece of movie history and and great movie to boot and I don't intend to miss out on it!

of course this is just my opinion.

please & thank you!

It'll be interesting to see how high the video bitrate is after all their hype about it. Hopefully it's practically maxed out. This sounds like a Superbit Sony DVD, except it's a Fox Blu-ray.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie! I was not really interested in it at first, I kept hearing how great the graphics were so I decided to give it a chance! I had also never been to a 3-d movie so this was a first for me!

With the actual design that was used in the film.

You can check my other posts on Avatar, I am definitely not a hater, and I know you don't want to hear it, but personally I don't see the value in buying it in April since the 3D will come out a bit later and that is the one I want. I can wait a few more months (especially since if I really wanted I can still go out and see it in 2D or 3D in theatres right now)

Bitrates mean jack. This release can look just as great with lower bitrates (hoovering around 20 megabytes per second is more then enough for a reference quality presenation) then with the bitrates jacked up for no reason but to please people who watch bitrate meters.

Fox is NOT releasing this barebones to max out the bitrate. Fox is releasing this in 2D bare-bones for absolutely no other reason then to get uninformed customers to buy this movie twice. I say wait for November. If you don't want or can't afford 3D equitment no problem the 3D version will play in 2D on all non-3D equitment and will look 100% identical to the 2D only version being released in April. That and youll get more extras. Simply put anyone who wastes there money on this barebones crap release should walk around with a giant sucker attached to there heads.

And if we have zero interest in watching extras for this particular movie, then what?

As for the bitrate, that's why I said it will be interesting to see if they are full of it or not. The proof will be in the pudding. I am skeptical about it just like you.

Yes, you are the only one.

Actually, I don't care for it much either. It looks cool, but I still don't like it. If they're going to put her on the cover, at least make it more than half of her face. We'll see what we actually get.

If you buy this release and you want extras, yes, you're a sucker. But I buy just for the movie, watching a bunch of hollywood nobodies fellate Cameron for an hour is going to be just that: extra.
