Thats simply as the codecs and bandwidth available is not enough to display it well.

It wasn't in lossless audio I don't think on KOTCS though, whereas Avatar has it in DTS-HDMA.

And YES, it is incredible.

I'm not sure what the final numbers will be but crushing the 30% margin doesn't really mean that it sold THAT many DVD's.

I know i am probabaly so in the minoity but this film to me isn't even in the top 5 films of the year. My 1st choice is Red Cliff and I feel in terms of story telling and epic battle scenes avatar just doesn't compare
but then again thats just me

Nothing wrong with that. What do you think of this blu ray release though as this is the thread about the disc, not the movie itself. (Though I guess I shouldn't talk about others bieng off topic in this thread ).

i compared 720p version of avatar vs 1080p version of avatar on my 106" full hd projector and i couldnt see any differents in CGI scenes and i only saw very small minor deifferentces on real humans skin and i had to stand very close to see that. 1080p and 720p are practically the same. Maybe you need 150" inch to see the difference.

Perhaps a stupid question but where did you get a 720p version of Avatar?
DVD = 480p
Blu-ray = 1080p
Is 720p some kind of HD broadcast or online rental perhaps?

I can't comment on Avatar but I have seen other movies in 720p (digital distribution) vs 1080p (Blu-ray) comparisons and still found that 1080 in some scenes had more detail. In other scenes the difference in detail wasn't as pronounced but conversely the colours would have more pop in 1080p and feel more lively (probably because there are more color shades used in the 1080p?). Perhaps the fact that the 720p bitrate had to be lowered for digital distribution also played a part in this but in general I feel that even though 720 looked good, 1080 in general still looked better in detail and color.

The IMAX screen is too nearly square for me.

I guess I'm just spoiled by the giant, curved screens in the 70 mm theaters that used to be in the Bay Area. For many films, 1.5 screen heights would be O.K. -- ultimately it's a matter of personal taste, of course -- but the following 70 mm films are damn near hypnotic with a much bigger image on one's retinas:

2001, Grand Prix, Around the World in 80 Days(1956), The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, etc.

Another group of 70 mm films benefit from an equally large screen, although they have many more close-ups ... it becomes "the face as landscape." These would include Ben Hur

Ah OK, thanks for clarifying. So the lowered bitrate and resolution didn't have all that big an effect on the quality?
