You all realize that Lucas has destroyed original stock from the first films he did not like? I think if we as fans were smart we would file a restraining order from him doing anymore damage to film/cultural history.

425i? Laserdisc had 480 horizontal lines of resolution. So did VHS, for that matter. 425 was the maximum number of vertical lines that could be discerned in the image. For VHS it was more like 250.

That said, a typical 2.35:1 feature only used 272 of those 480 lines (the rest was black bars), so the "pixel" resolution of Star Wars on laser would be about 425x272 (non-square pixels, of course).

Well, for a film like Star Wars (over 2 hours) we did have to swap discs. The CAV formatted ones were on three.

Well, only if you have a double-sided reading player, but don't tell me that the LD only holds 30 or so minutes per side. But in any case the only benefit of LD over DVD was their uncompressed PCM audio tracks. The video is inferior to DVD.

The only use for LD players these days is to play stuff that never made it to DVD or BD yet.

The price for LDs were ridiculously unreal. >$100 for most titles. I remember going into Suncoast vide stores in malls and seeing LDs for sale beyhind the counter back in the '90s before DVD and and at the prices.

I mean, if you wanna waste your money on top-of-the-line outdated equipment, go right ahead. I'm perfectly happy with my Oppo BDP-83.

Oh, quit the ignorant BS! Only special editions, mainly box sets with multiple discs and multiple extras went for those prices. You could easily purchase titles for as little as $25. Usually the asking price was around the $40 mark.

Well, OK...misunderstood the Wiki article, but still...still not as good as anamorphic DVD in any case. So like I said, the only benefit of LD was the PCM tracks.

But in essence LD was only good for old 4:3 TV screens. And preferably the large rear-projection sets or overhead projectors.

But I think anyone who is still holding onto their LD players and LD collections are those who kind of feel burned for buying a niche product that never caught on like DVD did in '97. I mean, anybody around these boards have HD-VHS players? You know, the format that came out the year or so before BD and HD-DVD came out?

Sure LD technology was out for quite some time...going back to the late '70s, no? But in all that time, it never caught on in a mainstream way.

Well, yeah...the ones that were behind the checkout counter. But I swear that I saw Judge Dread go for around $100.

And how many years did it take for the studios to get off their asses and actually produce only anamorphic discs? They sure took their sweet time so during the infancy of DVD they were pretty much on par with LD nudging ahead with lossless audio.

I'm quite pleased with how they are presented on my 46" Samsung

How so? Unless people have discs that rotted they still play as good as before. It is still a fully functional product. Heck, I still play LPs and 45s that are 40+ years old and they are still giving me enjoyment and so will my LDs as long as my player keeps on ticking.

I think you mean D-VHS, not HD-VHS and while I didn't jump on that I'm sure the people that did still enjoy their D-VHS titles. I am however proud of dissing the Philips CD-i and the Video CD when they arrived.

Mainstream or not, 20 years is a very long time for any format to last. It found it's intended consumers or else it would have vanished long before that.

Incorrect, the SRP for Judge Dredd was only $39.99 unless what you saw was an import title from Japan or something. There wasn't any other LD release of that title in the US.

This isn't a thread about LDs, and whether they were any good or not.

This is a Star Wars thread, and the topic is the Box Set supposedly coming out in October 2011.

I can't wait for an official announcement, but I am afraid that won't happen until sometime next year.

Ah, this is such agony! Why can't they tell us that they are working on them, and how and what....

I keep looking at this thread every day because I thought there's an official announcement or something new, but every time my excitement turned to a disappointment.
Agreed, this thread belongs in the Wish List section until it's announced.

That saw webpage from where I posted the long conversation overheard in 1976 with Lucas has another article. The guy wrote he was at a 2001:Space Odyssey screening in 1977 and they had the trailer for the upcoming movie Star Wars during the previews which he described as what looked bad Halloween costumes, and a guy dressed in a black with a crash helmet, sword laser weapons and lots of scenes of people shooting backwards while running. When it was over, someone in the audience yells out to the effect, What In The World Was That!? and everyone broke out laughing which lasted for awhile. Sorry, but those 2 screen caps reminded me of that story.

That also reminds me of a story that Mark Hamill likes to tell, in which I will paraphrase-

He said that in Dec of 1976 he and Carrie went to a theater in which they played the Star Wars teaser, and at the end of it when it states..."And its coming to your galaxy this summer" someone in the audience then yelled out- "YEAH! it'll be coming to TV 3 months later!"

And here is that great 1976 trailer-

Original Star Wars Teaser

- In some cases I prefer LD audio over even Blu-ray
- Yes, some things only came out on LD (unedited Star Wars for example)
- And frankly I prefer the packaging - especially the Criterion releases. Put's Blu to shame.

In any case, please continue basking in your AV superiority

The fact that you're getting your info from Wiki speaks volumes.

Actually I only started getting into LD in the past couple years (started with my Dragon's Lair player) and have grown to love them.

I suppose you think Vinyl is ridiculous as well, what with DTS-HD right?
