If I had to guess, I think it would be the Oppo 83...but I was telling eric this, that I find it hard to upgrade to it since my Panny BD-30 has been stellar, and it would seem to be a $500 upgrade to get SACD's and a few more bells and whistles that I am not sure if many mean all that much to me....but I keep reading how awesome it is, so of course I want one too.....
Unless you watch a lot of DVDs you might want to go with the Oppo 80 for just under $300. It seems like the 83 is for those who watch a lot of DVDs or use analog still.

I thought I read that the SACD's processor (I don't remember what it is actually called) is better on the 83? Enough so to help warrant the higher price tag. I have thought about the 80, but I then I think about how buying the 80 would be like buying the "cheaper" or "smaller" version of 2 subs, when I know I should just get the "best" or "biggest" one from the get go.

The 83 does have a better analog section than the 80, but the 80 does sound sweet . It also has the ABT scaler, where the 80 just has a standard scaler much like the one in the PS3. I have the same ABT scaler in my AVR which is part of the reason I went with the 80.

The good thing with OPPO is you are getting an awesome machine whichever one you choose, you just need to pick the one that suits your needs best .

I think you are talking about the DACs, in which case you may be right. I'm not really sure if there is a difference or what that difference is. However, if you choose to bitstream to your Elite and let it do the decoding, there wouldn't be a difference. It all depends on which component has the best DACs.

Yeah, that is something I will need to look further into whenever I think I am ready for the Oppo. I would bitstream, so it may not make a difference for me.....thanks Justin.

Just did a quick search of Oppo's site and AVS and (from this limited research) it looks like both will send DSD over HDMI, but only the 83 is capable of DSD over analog. Whereas the 80 will first convert the DSD stream to PCM when connected via analog. The 83 also has dedicated stereo analog outs.

Whether these are worth the additional $210 is up to you.

I am starting to think not....and that means I would have to spend $200 less dollars, making it hard not to really give the Oppo 80 some serious thought. Again, I have to weigh the worth of SACD for myself. If I don't think I will play music often, the 80 may not even be worth it......

I have 5 SACD titles right now, but would like to get a few more so the Oppo 80 looks like a good fit for me. I had given some though to the Sony *70 line which also play SACD. However, the Oppos have a simple, $15 region-free mod in case I ever want a region B title.

The 83 has a dedicated stereo output, where the 80's is shared with the 7.1 analog section. You can also output the DSD stream on SACD's via analog on the 83, whereas you can only output it as PCM via analog on the 80. Both output the DSD stream for SACD over HDMI (which is excellent ). The DAC's in the 83 are better than the DAC's in the 80 also, but for the price the 80 is a very high quality audio player.

Hope that helps a bit.

Yes it does, thanks -dase-. I really need to weigh how much I would use the 80 or 83 as a SACD player versus the price tags. If it is not much, then keeping the Panny BD-30 makes good sense (until it dies, anyway.)

Load up times, and using a dedicated stereo output are not big issues for me. Any possible improved PQ for blu and DVD's along with the SACD element are.....at least I have time to ponder before making any decision.....
