So, if HD-DVD does die off, what will happen to those folks who jumped in?

And that's the problem. They will tend to be in denial and lash out for perhaps years. And that can't be good in general. Everyone wants one format, as long as it is their choice. I always find it amusing that mods say "no politics". We know what they mean, but this is politics pure an simple. Red and blue. "My" candidate is great. "Your" candidate is evil. ![]() Gary |

![]() I seriously don't think that HD-DVD is quite finished yet, that I know of. I don't venture into the HD-DVD forum of the AVSF. The real people that would know such a decision would be the VC-1 encoding engineers at Microsoft and that other guy. ![]() If they throw the towel in, then they'll have to reprogram their encoders to be optimized for BD's bandwith limits. fuad |

Man, HD DVD supporters are pulling out all the stops on this one. It's just the PR guys, or Bill Hunt is some random guy with a website, announcements don't matter for product (remember that from the "50GB is years away" days?), and even that this means Disney and Fox are scared.
Me? I have the feeling we'll see a Pixar lineup (possibly paired with Apple Blu-ray offerings at Macworld), both PotC films, and some major Miramax titles. Blu-ray is already poised to take the lead in number of titles by the end of February, but the push will gain even more momentum. Hardware-wise, I'm thinking at least one sub-$700 offering. |

![]() I think LG are going to announce a player<$500 and PotC would be great, but Pixar will pull in many people because it is animated, and therefore will be pristine. Oh and 2 guesses at which AVS 'super moderator' closed the thread, you know which one ![]() |

Less than $500 HD DVD or BD player will not come in 2007 in my opinion, unless someone has a big pocket to subsidize it (like MS). Usually for CE equipment, total BOM cost must be less than half of its retail price. Big companies may require even 1/3 to 1/4 (smaller companies can afford more higher cost). Blue LD only costs around $100 now and is expected to be around $50-$70 by the end of next year. From what I heard, next gen drive itself costs around $250 to $300. It's tooo expensive to make $500 players in the next year.

That's great, if they are or decide to restart buying DVD.
But, my point was that when DIVX died, the owners of those players could still play comparable generation movie discs (DVD). If HD DVD dies, the user can't play BD discs on their player. So, this is more risky than DIVX. Gary |

I asked both in the main store (who said ask Magnolia) and in the Magnolia who said they had nothing at the moment. I just wanted to see the demo...

While the sales of players are important, the sales of BD movies are equally as important. Many people are going to look at the day and date releases, see the DVD is half the price and just buy the DVD. To many people the upconverted DVD is going to look close to the BD anyways. The prices of the discs need to get down to new release DVD prices ASAP.
