Hey... we all know there are people on here with true views that are that extreme... So I wouldn't be suprised to hear that...

In any case, I'm glad it was sarcastic radagast, makes this an easier conversation... although I was kind of hoping you were being serious, would have made for a fun discussion, lol!

I used "5 years" because improvements in technology are happening pretty quick and I knew that 5 years would seem a ridiculous time frame to re-make a movie. Hence my point that improvements in technology don't mandate re-making a movie.

But I do think Lord of the Rings needs to be re-done. Not because of the technology though.

I have had my fill of "fun discussions" in recent days. But I suppose I should have put an icon after my original comments.

Even though I grew up with ST TOS in syndication, I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you there. The original SFX are extremely hokey. My toddlers laugh when the Gorn comes out to fight Kirk and the wobbly shuttles are ridiculous.

I think most people would have preferred Star Wars redone in the same manner as Trek, where SFX were touched up, but no alteration in the actual acting content/length/pacing/music/score. The strings on the TIE fighters definitely needed to go, but Lucas also decided to redo the films to his own tastes and rerelease to theaters, to the consternation of numerous lamented 'raped childhoods.' I happen to actually like most of the changes in the Special Editions (exceptions for Hayden-ghost and Greedo shooting period, but that's neither here nor there). The best solution would be for LFL to use seemless branching, but so far I've been more impressed how much they've stuck to theirs guns and not milked re-releases to go after the grognards clamoring for the original untouched versions (original cut Version, "this time with no 'Episode IV' title in the Crawl!"; "NEW version with Biggs!" ; "New Super Special Edition with the TIE Fighter strings in HD and the original 'yub yub' ending song!!!").

Yep. My 18-year-old daughter got into Star Trek with the director's cut of the 1979 Motion Picture (believe it or not!), the resulting movies, and Next Generation.

But after getting the original on Blu-Ray, that's now her favorite. But she refuses to watch it with the original effects. And despite the fact I grew up with the original, I prefer the new effects too.

Count me in this group as well. The Star Trek Blu-Ray example fits, but another is what Ridley Scott did so brilliantly with Blade Runner: He put forward his own "Final" version of it, but was sure to include high-quality versions of the original theatrical version, the international version, and the mis-named Director's Cut.

I don't mind the changes, but if we want to show our kids and grandkids Star Wars in its original iteration, the one that created the phenonemon, we just...can't? That seems shortsighted.

You can't compare the special effects of those Star Trek movies with Star Wars ILM. The series had no budget what so ever and as Shatner points out, it was the writers and cast that made it the phenomenon it is, not effects. The new Star Trek created a new reality and changed EVERYTHING in that none of that happened now from the movies or the series. That is not a "touch up" and while I really liked the new Star Trek, many Trekkies are pissed at what JJ did. . You will probably more pissed Star War fans if something as drastic is done with the Star Wars franchise. Heck there was even a South Park Episode about it.

Has anybody seen the deleted scenes from Episode 4 involving Luke, Biggs and his friends at Tosche Station? Luke is witnessing the battle in space from Tatooine. I would love to see these scenes restored for the blu-ray as well as Leia/Han's kiss in Cloud City and the sandstorm from Jedi.

I'd rather see those scenes separately. Jabba the Hut was useless enough in Hope. The last thing we need is for LFL to pack in so many deletions.

Agreed. I understand that Lucas probably wanted to use that footage, but for me it was a distraction.

And I agree also guys.

However.........

Why not make a whole other separate cut involving those scenes? Kinda like that new Avatar cut that is coming up in November including about 30 or so minutes of unfinished footage?

Or is 'Ridley Scott' the only one allowed to release several versions of one movie, in one set?

.

I see what you mean. Just about any version of Star Wars would have a following, and I would gladly watch every version Lucas cares to release - at least once. However, due to my preference for nostalgia, I prefer the original, "non-special" versions.

Mostly because it was so poorly done.

I think at the time he thought he had to include it to "sell" the Spec Ed...i.e. that he could say, "plus deleted Jabba scene!"

It was one thing to see the CG Jabba in the prequels when he was "younger", but in ANH, so close to the appearance in Jedi, it just looks weird and out of place.

But then it's back to the whole CG versus rubber debate; I think Jabba in RotJ looks 1000x more "real" than the CG ones. With Yoda when it's done well enough it's hard to tell, but with Jabba it stands out like a sore thumb.
