I wish I could go into detail about all the crap I've had to deal with in getting this renovation done/started

. It's totally screwed up my vacation

& the law had to get involved

(it's complicated). I'd really love to......

I have a Question for you Russ,my Friend.

I see you own Both an Oppo BDP-83,as well as an Oppo BDP-80.

I know the BDP-83 is a good bit more expensive,but how much of a difference in performance,do you see and hear?

To tell you the truth...I've never A/B'd the units (although I wanted to) because I connect the units using the analog outputs and that would be too much switching around. As far as connecting the units through the HDMI cables there shouldn't be too great of a difference. The added costs going into the BDP-83 are generally for the chipset used for the conversion of standard DVDs (of which I own many), better DAC's for analog output & the completely metal construction. I can't tell you how many times friends have thought I was playing a BD in my theater only to be shocked when I told them it was standard def (It's that good). The same holds true for my DV-983H which it replaced (in my living room). Both of those machines do a better job with SD DVDs than the BDP-80 (noticeable but not by a great margin). Now when it comes to BD's I would assume the BDP-80 & 83 perform similarly. But being that the machines are connected in 2 entirely different systems (5.0 channel floor standing vs. 5.1 channel small bookshelf) using 2 very different displays (50" 1080p vs. 42" 720p), I can't give a fair comparison.

I will say this....... You will be extremely satisfied with either purchase. If you're primarily going to watch blu's using an HDMI connection, I'd probably go with the BDP-80. If you plan to watch a good deal of SD DVDs also then it's the BDP-83

Thanks for stopping by....... I'm going through a bit of a rough patch right now, but once my house guest leaves and I finish my other projects I'll be back to restoring and setting up my dedicated vintage 2 channel rig. I've always loved the sound of that big Marantz integrated amp. I'll just have to do alot of research to find some equally fantastic vintage speakers

I'm thinking Dalhquist or maybe Ohm......

Yeah........ The system in my livingroom is totally down for the count (until the rehab is done). And I was almost finished with my cable management

. But I still have the theater in my office up and running, So I don't have to do without..... Now it's just a waiting game (tick,tock)

When I was younger (a long time ago

) I often dreamt of owning a pair of La Scala's. I was also a big fan of the DQ 10's (those are the best speakers I've ever heard

) & I also liked several models in the Ohm line (Model F, I & C2). Because I have this running theme in my house I could go for the original AR 9's

. I remember the night I fried my AR 93's ( I'm still sick about that

)
