I didn't give it a 5/5 because I didn't quite love it, but everything about this film is great, I highly recommend it. It started off slow for me, but once I got to know the characters and story, I become immersed. Not sure if I want to buy this one yet, but this will be one that I'll enjoy even more the second time around

Walkabout - 3.5/5

I liked it. The direction and cinematography seemed kinda experimental and in a lot of ways I liked that, but overall I didn't connect with the film too much. That was my feeling right after I finished the film last night, but now that I've had time to mull it over, it's starting to grow on me a lot. I think I'll enjoy this much more upon my second viewing. It's late, so this is more or less my thoughts strewn together
I own walkabout about and i was seconds away from buying everlasting moments but i bought bottle rocket instead. The lady are barnes and noble told me i might not like Everlasting Moments because its commonly referred to as a chick flick. I should of purchased it anyway.

Its on my next to grab list though for sure.

I've always rated it four stars (out of 4), and I have no reason to change that rating now. It's undoubtedly one of the best thrillers ever made.

The one rating I change is PQ. I always gave the film 4.5 (out of 5), but have always been tempted to give it a 5. This time I finally have given in--the PQ is absolutely incredible. The clarity is oftentimes unreal. Take the last scene of the movie, for instance. Wow, in a word.

By the way, NPR did a huge poll recently of the top 100 thriller books of all-time. Tell No One, by the immensely popular American author Harlan Coben, came in at number 49. (side note: I noticed for the first time tonite that he makes a cameo in the film.) Tell No One is a very good book, but it's not Coben's best. The Woods is one of the best thrillers I have ever come across--it is absolutely incredible and would make an excellent film. Hold Tight is also top notch. Note that The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo comes in at number 2, and that all three books make the top 30. That's incredible. Silence of the Lambs was number 1, but it's been out for more than 20 years and had an Oscar winning film. The fact that Larsson's books are rated so highly after only a few years is an unbelievable feat. In a few years, there's no doubt Tattoo will be number 1.

Moved this up to the top of the ole Netflix Queue, looking forward to it. And thanks very much for the link to the Top 100 Killer Thrillers, some real phenomenal books on the list, nice to see Cryptonomicon #79 on there, really cool book especially if you are interested in code breaking.

That worker obviously never saw the movie and knows nothing about it. I've never once heard it referred to as a chick flick.

While I didn't enjoy it as much as Czar did (I still enjoyed it), if you were going into this film thinking it was anything but way over the top, then you went in with the wrong mind set. I'm not saying you should like it. I'm just saying that it wasn't meant to be anything but what it is.

Deja Vu is too clever for its own good (note: the $5 million that was paid for the spec script was at the time [and might still be] the highest ever paid for a spec script). Beverly Hills Cop II was the worst of the series. Days of Heaven and Top Gun I enjoy, so no complaints there. Granted he didn't try his ill-advised direction in those two films.

If someone else typed that, you'd kill 'em.

I haven't read the book yet and I'm sure it's great (the movie was fantastic), but Larsson's novel is probably ranked so high because it's fresh in the audience's mind and still enjoying international success. For example, whenever I ask an unsuspecting friend what his or her favorite movies are, 9 times out of 10 their list will be dominated by movies they've really enjoyed recently.

I'll argue that.

There is no argueing that it is a 5 star show. Everything about the entire series is excellent. And while the PQ and AQ are outstanding, there are more than a handfull out there that exceed it IMO.

The tin it comes in is so classy and detailed, it should win an award for best packaging.

Not the character himself affected my rating, but celebrating it made me though they turned this story into an adrenaline fantasy.
But he rejected materialism. He is the anti-snob.

Adam

I saw this last night with the gf and we both loved it. It's an incredibly heart-warming film about a young man with Asperger's syndrome and his relationship with his neighbor. They take interest in one another in a very peculiar way because of how Adam must express himself. It is full of touching moments and without the romance clichés. Though the subplots go in some questionable directions, I can confidently say Adam is the best romantic drama of 2009 next to 500 Days of Summer (although 500 is more of a romantic comedy, both are very unique in their own right).

I suggest anyone looking for a unique romance film check this one out.

I think that "over the top" phrase is over used at times. There are different type of over the top films and they all shouldnt be put in one basket. For example Shoot Em Up & From Paris With Love are both over the top in their own way. Shoot Em Up is intentionally over the top while From Paris isnt. I am not a fan of intentionally over the top films for the most part but films like From Paris, Taken etc....I love those as they are not intentional in that way. Just my two cents. Got Em!!

I'm actually starting to like this director more

.
But do you have any idea what their presence in the film meant? How the themes are connected to the kids? I sure cant put it together.
[Show spoiler] If we see, and are explained to, the nature of sexual curiosity with the children, why do we need more symbolism with the weather scientists? Were they trying to say that among youth, it is innocent and pure, and among adults it is pervy? The weather guys certainly were pervy, for sure. I could never figure that whole scene out, or how it fits, or what its trying to say.

But someone (surf?) pointed out that later on, the little boy asked if their father was dead too, implying that the aborigine was dead. I remember a shot of a tree afterwards, but was it supposed to be the tree that the aborigine was in? If so, then he was gone and I guess he must be alive. I never got the feeling that the tree shown was the one the aborigine was in, but I could be wrong

Default Le Trou

Le Trou (1960)

A Black and White French prison break film directed by Jacques Becker.

I have to say I really enjoyed this Criterion DVD.

The film is about five men sharing one cell and attempting to dig their way out of prison. It's mostly dialogue of course, taking place in confined quarters obviously.

I loved some of the directing choices, but i feel compelled to give a word of warning to those that dont like LONG takes. Becker is not afraid to "park" the camera and allow the lens to be filled with the constrained events unfolding within the cramped environments. One scene in particular, early in the film, has the unmoving camera aimed at a one meter area on the floor for a very very long time, with no cuts, as each man takes his turn to chip away at the concrete. It lasts forever, and I loved it because it drove home the point of how tedious the work was and how difficult the challenge was.

The film has little character development and really didnt need it. Its all about the present. It succeeds at capturing the claustrophobic nature of prison and digging tunnels. Equally as well, it succeeds at capturing the growing level of trust and a bond between a group of men who share a common fate, destiny and goal.

A novelty of the film that I really enjoyed, (maybe it's the MacGyver in me ) Was that the characters employed a wide variety of original, ingeniously conceived and built tools to dig, fool gaurds, tell time, and hide.

PQ: I wont score it, but the PQ was darn good for a DVD and the 1.66:1 aspect ratio felt very tight and real. Good stuff.

AQ: I was blown away by the AQ. Dolby MONO and it sounded great. The audio plays a big role in this movie, as silence at times is paramount, yet breaking concrete and cutting metal cant be done in complete silence. Dialog was clear and many important sound effects were sharp as hell an had me jumping a couple times.

Film 4.25/5 and solidly recommended.

Do they make it out? See it to find out.

------------------------------------

I'd like to thank the member who recommended this to me, but I cant remember who it was. Shame on me, and Thanks!

I get what you are saying. It wasn't really my intention to lump Shoot 'Em Up and From Paris With Love into the same group since Shoot 'Em Up is a spoof and From Paris With Love is just an action movie. Both are still over the top in my opinion though, but I mean that as a movie having a large amount of crazy action. That doesn't mean I think all movies that have that are all the same though. I love Shoot 'Em Up and it wouldn't have worked if it took itself seriously, but to each their own of course.
