And what would you do with 3D BD w/o 3D panel?

You can watch it in 2D since all 3D discs are backwards compatible.

Maybe to avoid double dipping. I like buying my movies one time thank you very much. If it was a great movie like Toy Story 3 I may considering breaking down owning it in 2D and rebuying later. However Avatar is not a great movie. When you strip away its amazing visual effects and breakthrough stereoscopic technology its really nothing more then an average story and a script that seems like it was penned in one draft without anyone revising it to fix its gaping plot holes and one dimensional characters. Don't get me wrong Avatar is good enough to own as visual 3D demo material but its not something I want to buy multiple times. Its a movie Im more then willing to wait on rather then buy without the use of my right eye.

I plan to upgrade to a 3D Display this year... I just don't want to be locked into the particular Panny set that AVATAR would require me to buy.

In case anyone is interested, The Steelbook is now back in stock at Play.com for £42.99. Bit expensive, just a heads up.

I'll probably get it when I can get it for about 15 pounds used but thanks for the heads-up.

So people should wait a year, than buy/return TV only for opportunity to get 2D theatrical release of Avatar for free. Cool.

Well, I heard Samsung not very good. I saw Sony panels and Alice demo - pretty good experience, but you really need big panel. Also I heard that Panny is the best choice for 3D.

Good point

Truth is buying the 2D release and double dipping later might actually be more price efficient then that. And it would certainly have far less of a hassle

As for me Ill patiently wait. Maybe ill get a Panasonic 3D model and get the disc. Maybe I won't.

Me ? I'm buying a Panasonic for xmas baby (at credit)
I know several people, I'm a front projector guy, but what about all the customers who want this (alot of people) who already bought a 3d panasonic tv. They also have to wait to get a copy as they didn't buy this bundle. This bundle business could very well kill of 3d for home. Let's hope it somehow manages to survive this stupid strategy.

The thing is, is in many people's eyes it is a great movie, including mine. I will double dip. But not this november (unless I can get it extremely cheaply). I'll buy again (I already have the 2d theatrical blu-ray), when the 3d release with the extended version is released (with seemless branching so I can still watch the theatrical cut). Untill that is released without having to buy a tv, I shant get it (unless it just so happens to be bundled with a 3d projector I would be buying anyway, it however would not ever have me buy a tv/projector just for it, or sway me away from a better projector.

That bieng said, if you are wanting to go 3d, and you don't want a projector set-up or DLP set-up, the panasonic is the best product out there in my honest opinion.

The eventual 3D release will likely be barebones anyway. So not worth skipping the November release.

lol exactly

Truth is we don't know what the eventual 3D general release will be so its pretty pointless to speculate.

The December Panasonic exclusive release is certainly barebones (or at least will not have all the extras of the collecters edition). But there are many unanswered questions about it.

1. Will it be jamed up on one disc or spread over 2 (given that 3D requires 50% higher bitrates?

2. Will it be the theatrical or extended cut?

Truth is this release should be the extended release spread over two discs but knowing how every release of Avatar has been compromised before I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't.

Plus there's the insane cost of the restocking fee for products like that.
Which was put into place to prevent people buying big screen expensive TVs for Super Bowl parties and then returning them afterwards.
I already returned an hdtv before with the best buy silver mastercard.

No problems....no restocking fees or whatever.

I thought it was encoded in such a way that it wouldn't require that as the two images are very similiar and thus it is almost as if they share common data. Much like different frames do with current 2d encoded blu-rays.

I saw the theatrical version 9 times in cinemas, and the extended version once in cinemas.

That is true. Thats why 3D Blu-Rays average 50% higher not 100% higher. Every 3D movie is made up of 2 eye streams. The main eye stream (usually the left eye as was the case with Avatar) which is essentially a 2D 1080p video (This gives 3D Blu-Rays backwards compatibility). The secondary eyestream records the differences between the two streams and in doing so adds depth. The more depth in the scene the higher bitrate the secondary eyestream will need. The secondary stream could use as little as 20% of the main eye or it could use well over 50% but should average about 50% higher bitrate 3D Blu-Rays require over 2D Blu-Rays. Avatar may not have had pop out effects but it used deep depth frequently and thus will likley need to use at least the average 50% higher rates for its secondary eye stream.

Thats the problem with fitting Avatar on a single BD-50. The current 2D Blu-Ray devotes just under 45 gigabytes to the feature with another gigabyte for the menu. Simply adding the secondary eye on top of the current 2D Blu-Ray would result in a movie that uses around 64 gigabytes. This is why Avatar 3D Blu-Ray will likley need to be spread over 2 discs to avoid compromising quality.
