Really. So all those people who think Alien 3 and Ressurection both sucked out loud aren't Alien fans. And yet many of them couldn't wait to drop a ton of cash for the two films they did like.

How odd.

And what I'm saying is that the six films have to be taken as one saga. Whether we agree on specific points or not is irrelevant. You can't truly be a fan (at least not much of one) if you (and I don't mean you personally) dismiss 50% of something for whatever reason. If someone wants to be called an OT fan, fine. If someone wants to be called a PT fan, that's great too. But to be called a Star Wars fan, someone has to be a fan of the entire body of work. As I said, the titles of ALL SIX FILMS start with the words STAR WARS. Not only episodes 1-3 or 4-6, but all six episodes. Of course we're all going to have things we don't agree with in the films. But as a Star Wars fan, I have to take the entire body of films, or I am not being a true fan.

I'm one of those people who don't like Alien 3. I don't call myself a fan of Alien (in the entire franchise sense) though. I am a fan of Alien & Aliens. End of story. If I only liked Star Wars 1-3, I would call myself a fan of the original Star Wars films, not a Star Wars fan. I'm also a fan of The Clone Wars series. If I didn't like that, I would say I was a fan of the Star Wars films, rather than of the entire "Magilla". I have issues with episodes 1 & 6, but I take them as part of Star Wars and call them on individual strengths & weaknesses, rather than syaing The OT sucks or The PT sucks.

How many of the Bond movies do I have to like in order to be a Bond fan (in the franchise sense)?

Surely not all twenty-howevermany?

Obviously liking twelve Bond movies wouldn't be enough to make me a fan of the franchise. That would only be about half and that clearly doesn't cut it.

So, what, eighteen or so?

Well, I am a HUGE 'Star Wars' (1977) fan, so I guess that you could say that I am a Star Wars fan.

I think you're misunderstanding my point. Maybe I went off base too far? What I'm saying is that... Of course, as fans we are going to like certain aspects, characters & entire episodes more than others, and there will be aspects, characters & entire episodes that we don't like. But some people on these forums (I'm not saying you) completely dismiss 50% of the saga, rather than taking all parts on their own. They look at it as the OT vs. the PT when clearly, all six episodes are one story. I guess that's my point (boldfaced). Someone who doesn't get that, can't be much of a fan. I have just as much of a problem with someone who goes out of thier way to justify everything in the saga, as though there are no issues.

I'll admit, I still have a problem calling the original anything but Star Wars. I now call it A New Hope or Episode IV only when I need to, in order to specify it for whatever reason. It's like with Alien... How do you single out the original film from the entire franchise? At least with Star Wars, the original was later differentiated with it's own episodic title.

My point is even simpler - I just like ****ing with people who say 'true fan'

Yeah, every now and then I can get away with Star Wars because of context but more often than not being stubborn just causes confusion.

I actually hate using the term "true fan" myself. It was definitely the wrong choice of words.

Look at the people who were promoted to high positions in the Empire. Probably well over 90% of them were white humans.

That is your opinion. I personally love all 6 Star Wars movies, even though they all may have some flaws(except episode V). And many others do to.

I think it is difficult to blend them into one Saga, they're chalk and cheese. When we sit down and watch Ep. III then IV they won't seamlessly branch together. They're not the same and that can be at times something to celebrate.

The James Bond films are an interesting analogy as people like the Connery era, the Moore or the Brosnan more than the Daltons or Craigs. Each era has it's own supporters and detractors like the PT and OT and there are fans who love everything. TV shows are the same you can have one season which feels different, it doesn't mean it's any worse just different.

My own feeling is I love the OT, they're special parts of my life, I like and love the PT's as well, they have their moments and are at times amazingly spectacular but they feel different to me than the originals. I gaze upon the OT with rose-tinted glasses rarely going beneath the surface while I scrutinize the PT down to every pixel....

It would be nice if all the OT lovers and PT haters could admit that but most don't, I think I'll always like the PT more, even if the OT are the better movies. Hope I have another PS3 by the time these come out, think they'll look better on a Slim than on a 570.

I call BS on this... trying to match the PT up with the OT is like trying to put a square peg in a round hole. I saw "Star Wars" in the theatre in 1977 when I was 9 years old. I, at the at time, was about as close to a true Star Wars fan as you can get... even though the 2011 me thinks the PT was mediocre film making.

YES!

I'm glad to have been young enough to see all the Special Editions in theaters, and the prequels as well. I've been able to fully enjoy all of them for a good portion of my life, and I'm glad to see I'm not alone in that.
Yep, me too. It's good that there are people who see the PT with open eyes.
Welcome to the club!

You are comparing apples with oranges.

Star Wars is the vision of ONE man, George Lucas.

He directed 4 out of 6, and wrote the stories, .....

They are his babies, whereas the Alien movies were just sequels, directed by other people, written by different writers,....

Similar thing with the Bond franchise, but here you could divide them into the Connery, Moore, ...era.

Not the same at all.

Of course the PT has a different feel from the OT.

If they were the same, then I would have been very worried about George's development. People change, everything changes.
The late 90s and early 21st century were completely different from the 70s and 80s.
It's only natural.
Besides we already had three films with a similar tone.
I, for one, am glad that we got some nice variety.
This way, if I had to choose only one film I could watch for the rest of my life, it would be the SW Saga, as it's so diverse and complex.......

That's pretty cool.

Also, here is another more detailed link regarding her influence on George and his films-

In the second book I'm not even sure if she is mentioned. It's strange the degree to which George Lucas has gone to to erase his ex-wife from the Star Wars story.

I love this quote from her: ""By the time George could afford to have a film facility he no longer wanted to direct. After Star Wars, he insisted, 'I'm never going to direct another establishment-type movie again.' I used to say, 'For someone who wants to be an experimental filmmaker, why are you spending this fortune on a facility to make Hollywood movies? We edited THX in our attic, we edited American Graffiti over Francis' garage, I just don't get it, George.'"

Too bad George didn't stick to his promise... the PT films may have been rescued by a capable director.
