I love this quote from her: ""By the time George could afford to have a film facility he no longer wanted to direct. After Star Wars, he insisted, 'I'm never going to direct another establishment-type movie again.' I used to say, 'For someone who wants to be an experimental filmmaker, why are you spending this fortune on a facility to make Hollywood movies? We edited THX in our attic, we edited American Graffiti over Francis' garage, I just don't get it, George.'"

Too bad George didn't stick to his promise... the PT films may have been rescued by a capable director.
I had read that those two books did do some revised some history regarding her influence on the films. Which is interesting because they make note of her influence being substantial on the Empire of Dreams documentary that was in the 2004 set.

I'm with chip on this issue. For me, it's hard to see both trilogies as one story. For a few reasons:

1. The original trilogy is about Luke, and the prequel trilogy is about Anakin, which to me makes them 2 different stories.

2. There is a gap of 16 years between making Return Of The Jedi & The Phantom Menace. When this happens, it can be hard to really connect the movies together. I feel the same way about the 6th Rocky film. While I consider it a decent film, it doesn't really blend in with the rest of the series.

I'm sure there are a few more reasons, but I can't think of them right now.

Yea, I agree with this also.

Sometimes when SPIKE is showing 'Revenge of the Sith' and 'A New Hope' right after, I will sometimes catch most of RotS and then once ANH gets going afterword, it's like they are two totally different franchises with very little in common at all. I really chalk that up to the overuse of CGI in the prequels while OT's only had a very tiny bit of it. But it is just like the difference between night and day.

I just finished reading The Making of ESB and I don't think she was mentioned even once. She's certainly not listed in the index. No matter what the differences were between the two of them it seems somewhat childish to whitewash her contributions to the movies. They weren't minor... she won an Oscar for her editing work on ANH. She wasn't a "yes" man/woman and it may have irked George... for that the mini-emperor has airbrushed her out of his version of movie history.

I'm sure there are a few more reasons, but I can't think of them right now.
Just because something doesn't blend doesn't mean it's not part of the same story. Look at Forrest Gump. That story is all over the place, It's the story of his childhood, the story of his college days, his military career, his Wife's battle with AIDS, etc, etc, etc. Just because it was put into one movie doesn't necessarily make it any more connected. That could have easily been a few films. If that were the case, would his childhood have not blended with his days as a fishin' boat Captain? Star Wars is all one long saga. Just because it deals with different eras doesn't make it any less so. The only thing really seperating episodes 4-6 from 1-3 is the technology available at the times of their filming. That very much does make them feel different. Sure there are some holes between 1-3 & 4-6. There are also holes within each trilogy. That is the writer's fault, rather than the fact that there was a gap of 16 years. Besides, that doesn't explain inconsitencies that take place within the same film(s). Like Bluyoda said, I too would have been worried if they (the two trilogies) were too much the same. This saga takes place over a good deal of time. If Episode 6 felt the same as Episode 1, there would be a problem.

And by the way, GL himself said that the entire story is that of Luke's Father. The main focus of the PT was the fall of Anakin Skywalker, while that of the OT was his redemption. The focus was put on Luke because he was the redeeming factor and the "good guy" of the films. They're two pieces to the same puzzle.

Since we're tossing around the title of "True Star Wars Fan"... if you can't IMMEDIATELY identify the person on the left in this photograph then you aren't a true Star Wars fan. If you can't IMMEDIATELY identify the person on the right you are in the wrong thread.

That pic is pretty small. Can you blow it up some?

However, I will just take a guess and say
[Show spoiler]Akira Kurosawa
?

Good guess... now I'd like to know if there is a co-relation between the number of Kurosawa films seen by a Star Wars fan and their like/dislike of the PT.

Indeed, Akira Kurosawa. That's pretty testing, though. To make things a little easier, I think every true Star Wars fan should recognize this guy:

I thought the true fan discussion was over? I admitted it was poor choice of words.

Besides, there's a difference between being a fan & being an uber geek who knows everything there is to know about something. My answer to who that is in the picture is I don't care who is in the picture. I suppose you know what this is...

Elstree Ice Rink.jpg

I'll tell you what it is... It's called diverting attention from the real discussion.

Who gives a sh-- what you think. If people want to post pictures of George Lucas and other talents/legends along with him for a Star Wars fan to name--in a Star Wars thread--that's their business.

So true fan is a poor choice of words but ubergeek isn't?

There's a heck of a lot I don't know about the OT but I know a younger George Lucas revered Kurosawa... a director who was as masterful a storyteller as cinema has ever seen. Lucas used to borrow from directors like Kurosawa as well as tap into archetypes seen in anything and everything from ancient myth all the way up to Saturday serial films like Buck Rogers.

I don't see much of this in the work of older George Lucas.

I'll go with the Rebel figure skating rink on Hoth.

Second picture.... I think it's Ralph MacQuarrie (sp?)

I'm saying a picture of Akira Kurosawa has nothing to do with anything. You can post pictures of yourself, living in your Mom's basement with all your Star Wars "action figures" up on the wall if it truly floats your boat. My point is post a relevant reply, rather than diverting attention from the discussion.

Besides, this is the Star Wars BD release thread... Not a general Star Wars discussion thread, so it's all off-topic. I suppose Akira is authoring the BDs?

And I too know that GL idolized Kurosawa. That doesn't mean I'm going to recognize Kurosawa in a photo. Saying someone who wouldn't immediately recognize Kurosawa isn't a true Star Wars fan... Yes, that's getting into the realm of uber geek.

Rebel skating rink on Hoth?.. WRONG, You're not a true fan!

...But you are close with the skating rink part.

You may dispense with the pleasantries... I'm here to put you back on schedule.

Actually, we should all find obscure Star Wars reference photos, post them and see who can ID them.

By the way, that's the ice skating rink at Elstree Studios, London.

Sometimes the hate with this fandom is palpable. I do miss the days of spoilers and specualtion. The fandom was fun, but now its all daggers and knives at everyones throats.

On another note, I was in another thread on these forums discussing awful cover art, and it sparked a thought. Does anyone rememeber, when the cover art for the 2004 set was revealed? Was it with the announcement, or closer to the release? I am really exited to see what kind of packaging we get. Given it's a Fox release I have a feeling this may get a book like packaging similar to the Alien Anthology and Avatar Collector's Edition which are both also from Fox. I know many don't seem to like the book style packaging, but I could see Fox making some beautiful packaging for this set if they went that route.
