Thanks, dadkins. So, out of all the current 1080p and 7.1-enabled notebooks out there right now, which would you consider to be either the best or at least very decent quality?


I'm just trying to figure out in my head if I should go for one soon or wait until a bit later in the new year.

I am Sony biased, as in, I buy the biggest, baddest VAIO made at time of purchase.
ATM, the VGN-AR690U is the Sony Flagship - NOT CHEAP!

I'll second the Sonys, I'm using their top-of-the-line model from a few years ago right now. It's been on 24/7 for years and has never had any issues at all. After my experience with Sony laptops I'd have a tough time going with any other brand.

Uhm... considering that several PCs have Blu-ray drives from the factory(AR190G was the first BD laptop BTW)... yeah! I guess you could say I prefer PCs over Macs.

Obsolete... yeah they do! Laptops especially! Always something newer and badder being released, ya know?

Get the biggest and baddest machine at this point in time, and in 6 months there is something that will eat it alive.

I'm right there with ya. I got the AR-590 a few months ago when it was the biggest and baddest. Now it's already getting to be "outdated"

I'm not biased to Sony, though. At the time it was cheaper than what Dell had to offer in a BD laptop.

Sony is the best Multimedia laptop on the market right now? That's news to me

Maybe if gaming isn't part of Multimedia... Gaming is a big issue for me, and the Alienware slaps the Sony in the mouth in terms of 3d Graphics and Power. Not to mention RAID0 HDD's and SLI GPU's.

The HP 20.1 inch Notebook has a 1920 X 1200 screen that is a little better resolution then 1080P. It is the only 20.1 inch Notebook on the market that has 1080P resolution with 7.1 surround sound decoder. They just started placing BLU-RAY drives in the Notebook. It also can be ordered with Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition. Dell and Sony’s notebooks only have 32 bit Vista. If you want to take advantage of the Sony and Dell’s 64 bit CPU you need to format the hard drive and purchase a 64 bit version of Vista. I have had first hand experience playing around with a fully loaded HP Notebook with 4GB of memory and a 2.8GHZ processor. It is a nice Notebook accept the built in ATSC tuner does not work. The Notebook fully loaded use to cost almost $5,000 two weeks ago. Now the new pricing you can get one fully loaded for around $600 less since the prices have fallen.

So, comparing resolution and sound capabilities then, the HP is better than the Sony in your opinion? Since it seems like the majority of people prefer Macs to PCs these days, would it be a smarter move to go with an Apple notebook of some kind?

CES starting on Jan 7th 2008 might have some new models to choose from that will be released in early to late 2008.

Why bother getting the biggest baddest video card for your desktop, when we all know there will be a GT version in 6 months?

Why bother getting the new processor now, when we all know there will be a new one in 6 months?

Because! ATM, you can have "it" and use "it".

Because, "it" will still work for nearly all uses for the forseeable future.

Why buy a new car when we all know there will be a newer one in 8-10 months?

It seems to me that there isn't much in the way of HD-compatibility for Macs yet...I don't know, I really am having a hard time figuring out which system to go for. Everyone says PCs are so virus-prone, unreliable and not as "advanced/cutting edge" but on the other hand in some ways Macs seem somewhat overrated in certain aspects.

PC laptops have had BD capabilities since may 2006(the VGN-AR190G)

Apple is one of the BDA's "Big Guns" and still no BD ROM playback.
You can get a Fast(?) BD drive for the Mac, but there wasn't(isn't?) BD ROM (Pressed Factory movies) support.

*I* have never had an issue with malware/viruses - on any of my machines - Sony VAIOs.

Also, some of the BD enabled laptops not only read, but can burn BDs.

As long as you keep your antivirus software updated every week like Norton Internet security you should not have any problems. Macs are good computers but their Notebooks lack a BLU-RAY drive option at this time. Personal I never liked Macs since in the desktop world I like building my own PC’s choosing the power supply, motherboard, etc.
If you are interested in BLU-RAY Notebook for primary watching movies your only choice is a Windows based Notebook.
