Default Corruption of the Dark Side?

I know i have read it and i think Lucas said it that the Dark Side is Parasitic and that those on the Dark Side over time through their actions start to age quicker their eyes start changing color their bodies start to age and decay at a faster pace.

I remember when EP3 came out he was discussing this cause it was assumed that Palpatine's appearance ALA ROTJ suggested that his body was aging quicker and that is why he looked like that.

But we now know that Palpatine's appearance was due to his fight with Mace in EP3.

I also remember someone asking Lucas about why in ROTJ Anakin's ghost is that of the Anakin circa EP3.

He stated that the darkside was parasitic and that while the person will age quicker on the outside, on the inside the person is still the same as when they first turned and that is why Anakin's spirit was that of a young man.

I don't know if this makes sense but it would explain the reason why we see Anakin's EP3 form at the end of ROTJ.

how stupid. Movies should not have to be explained. Unless it's Ocean's 12 or something.

That would explain how Kenobi was able to deliver the devastating blow i remember Kenobi telling Anakin right when he was about to jump: DON'T TRY IT!

And also how Luke was able to get the upper hand in the fight in ROTJ by kicking him down the stairs.
Maybe he had an inner-ear problem?

I like mushy peas, but not carrots.

That is my contribution to this thread.

Jury's still out on that one.

Prevailing opinion (which I myself share) is that Palatine was cloaking his real appearance and used the fight with Mace as an excuse to drop the disguise, at the same time appearing more frail and damaged to Anakin.

Remember as Sidious we only saw his chin, not his face.

He could therefore completely drop the "mask" and be public with it, explaining his face as a result of the attack by Windu. Note he didn't say "fight" or "duel" in his speech to the Senate.

Love how the scarred Palps echoed what happened to the Ukrainian PM a while back. Not the whole Jedi/Sith/Force lightning thing of course, but rather an attempt on his life which left him disfigured.

He was using the force to disguiuse his appearance. Luke and others have done it many times in the books so that people don't recognize them.

I'm sure he knew a man of unknown old age that looked like Sidious would not win any political races, and therefore would never of been in a position to become chancelor.

I thought he was supposed to be a Senator from Naboo that was known by Padme/Amidala... do you think he would have made it as far as he did on a planet such as Naboo without some level of legitimacy? I take it as one more of the inconsistencies in the story and don't feel the need to rationalize it with Expanded Universe conjecture.

Keep in mind that onscreen there are no inconsistencies regarding Palpatine's deformed appearance. If one never read the EU or heard any George Lucas quotes on the subject and watched the films, taking them at their face value, Palpatine's face in Return of the Jedi is the direct result of being scarred in Revenge of the Sith, no ifs, ands, or buts. You will not find one instance in the OT or PT that ever said the dark side makes you age faster or ravages your body.

However, there is inconsistency between Palpatine's appearance between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. For some reason he looks noticeably older in Clones than he does in Sith. Though I suppose one could assume Palpatine is on the vain side and had some plastic surgery between films, since we are on the topic of EU and fan theories.

What's your definition of legitimacy? History is filled with people who have gained political power, or have served in high levels of politics, with little to no "legitimacy".

Lucas was originally going a different route and was going to have palpatine slowly let his disguise down as he gained more control of the republic so that by the time he had gained total power he would have looked like he did in ROTJ. However, in preproduction of ROTS he changed his mind and wanted him to become disfigured or suddenly change to his sidious form in the duel with Mace Windu. Its mentioned in the Making of Revenge of the Sith book. Just a small change Lucas did. Can't really read much into it.

I do not think any real details for what will be included are to be expected until later this summer.

Exactly right, Cook about Lucas' decision on Palpatine.

Not to mention that if you look at him after he becomes "scarred" in ROTS and you look at him in ROTJ, there is a difference. I'm sure that some of this could be attributed to possible changes in make up technology over the years, and the fact that the actor, himself, was much older (and little 'fuller' in the face) at the time ROTS was being filmed.

But still, in ROTJ, he just looked like an old, pale man for the most part. In ROTS, they made his eye color change, and there seemed to be these extra wrinkles/waves in his skin to give is sort of a 'melted' appearance. Those same wrinkles, at least to that extent, don't seem to exist in ROTJ, and neither did the red eyes.

It's not a big deal at the end of the day, I suppose, but it's just another example of how some of Lucas's last minute rethinking of things often raises more questions than it answers, and doesn't 'flow' as well as he intends it to.

Frankly I felt that aside from the difference in skin tone, in the PT he resembled his appearance in ROTJ more when they showed him in his Sidious robes before he had the accident. The added make up after the accident in ROTS just made him look more bloated than anything to me.

Then why is Luke not horribly scarred after being blasted with force lightning in ROTJ?

Where the hell is Luke horribly scarred in Return of the Jedi with the force lightning?

I've watched that film over 20 plus years and that's the first I've heard of that.
