Not a joke. Granted my synopsis pokes a bit of fun, but that really is the essence of each of their reasons. Pretty sad.

Quick question, since the Nielson Thread isn't so popular these days. Are we expecting to get the sales data tomorrow? I figured they'd release the last 2 weeks at the end of the year. Or does a week end on Friday....? Sorry, I'm new to this business.

Well, they finally got out the week ending 12/16 data in the issue put out on Friday. the following week's data will be in the issue next Friday, although it's already known to be 61/39 (same as the 12/16 data).

The Nielson data runs Monday through Sunday, and the data is typically reported on the next Friday. They're a week behind now as the magazine that reports the info doesn't run an issue Christmas week. They'll catch back up in a week or two though, as they should print the first two weeks of '08 together (or the last of 07 and the first of 08).

I wonder why the hd-dvd folks didn't use the BIGGEST reason why so many people who have bought into hd-dvd, as number one on their list: hd-dvd isn't made by Sony. I just don't get why so many people are willing to buy hd-dvd, JUST because they hate Sony.

Because the only people who really hate Sony already own HD DVD. There aren't nearly as many of them as it looks like on the internet. And they're all pretty much just gamers who love the 360 (and the original XBox) and hate the fact that Sony has always succeeded in the gaming world, while M$ has... well...

What I really like is that they NEVER mention Microsoft anywhere in their Top 10 list. I think that's a good indication that they know what company most people really dislike.

sadly, many people trust Micro**** as a modern and trusted company, thus they hate Sony - which is Japanese, doesn't help

I agree, I think a more fair list (although not 10) neutral to both sides. This is just everything positive/Negative about both formats I can think of.

Blu-Ray
1. Has Lager Capacity per layer. (One Layer = 25GB to HD-DVDs current max of 17GB).
2. Potential to go up to a mega 200GB Disks
3. Has more movie studio support
4. More supporting Premium Manufacturer Player suporters, e.g Sharp, Pioneer, Panasonic.
5. BD+ Protection offers better protection for studios.
6. All Players from the start support 1080p
7. PS3 has a very good, quiet, blu-ray player integrated. Xbox360 is noisy as hell and needs a £120 addon to play HD-DVD's.

8. Better PC drive support, HD-DVD has no purchasable HD-DVD-Roms or HD-DVD-RW drives. Sony has many to choose from.

9. Better chance for player manufacturer competition, (i.e Point 4) meaning the potential exists for price/performance competition between the many supporting companies to drive prices down of players.
10. BDJava in v1.1 offers high potential for extra features.

HD-DVD
1. No region coding!. (the biggest, downfall of Blu-Ray and the biggest poke at us Europeans was Sony doing this and having effectively two regions BD-A for US and every player supporting manufactures country, and secondly another for Europe - If region coding was so necessary why wasn't Japan and Korea the same regions as Europe like they were with standard DVD?)

2. No BD+ meaning better for the public.

3. Finished format meaning all players support same features and have done since the first player released. Whereas Blu-Ray goes through v1, v1.1 v2 and features on newer disks are non compatible on older players.

4. Disks/players are cheaper to manufacture, due to the HD-DVD manufacturing processing being a closer extension of that of SD-DVD's, meaning this lower price can be translated to the public (although currently HD-DVD disks are the same price as Blu-Ray which is odd and a bit of a con if buying HD-DVD disks).

5. HD-DVD have offered the 5 disk offer in the UK, Sony as yet have not.

6. Players are currently considerably cheaper to buy in the UK than Blu-Ray.

Now that is a completely unbiased list of everything postave I can think of for both formats. Trying to be as neutral as possible.

The interesting thing is that Blu-Ray has 10 positives, HD-DVD only has 6.

I would say each format needs to address at least half on the other side to win the war (so Blu-Ray only needs to improve on 3, HD-DVD needs to improve 5).

Therefore the chances of success are clearly in Blu-Rays favor I just wish the region coding would go as Blu-Ray disks in the UK are £25 to a whopping £35 (~$70) each in HMV and Virgin.

Whereas the same Blu-Rays are $20-$25 (~£10-£13) in the US.

If the prices of disks come down in the UK more would be sold, this would increase stastics supporting Blu-Ray disks sold, meaning more people would thus choose to go Hidef and support it, and thus an end of this war could be soon.

That was just my opinion on it all.

number 4 is wroung for hd dvd there are 1080i movies

for the hd dvd one it sounded like they realy had to look for reason

Having a finished format is not at all an advantage (although it is a nice pun because the format, let's face it, was finished from the get-go). It makes DUD not at all futureproof, with no possible room for expansion.

But we all know that's a crock anyway, since they're hyping the non-existent TL51 now.
