Well Amir seems to think that they are still going to annunce more titles, but I don't really hold out much hope (is hope really the right word there).

August '07 Universal will release on Blu-ray, at this rate.

I'm somewhat interested in that whether the conspiracy theory I posted before will turn out to be true or not .

2006 was end, contract term was end, obligation period was end, influx of money was end, suddenly Universal seems slowing down its pace. There is also some extra factor (AACS) which could be one of the reason for the excuse for going neutral. Let's see what will happen.

Well there's about 60 Universal titles now. They have what? 4 more announced officially? Maybe they have a contractual release minimum number too? Are they near it? Would that be one reason they pumped movies at a rate 3 times more than other studios output, relatively? Reminds me of a similar story about The Beatles owing EMI an album when they abandoned Get Back. So they did Abbey Road.
Who knows what lurks in the hearts of Universal. Only the Shadow knows.
(Widescreen 1.85 DTS of course )

Is it true that Universal announced 1 or 2 Blu-Ray movies already? It wouldn't be surprising after nothing at CES.

Unfortunately not. What you may have heard is that they announced two movies for HD DVD in April (underwhelming eh?)

Heck, right now Universal's BD support is pretty darn close to the HD DVD support (non-existant).

my theory is that everyone knows MS IS Hddvd.
MS wants both formats to tank with the masses so they can clear the path for HD content on demand...

Just my theory

Amir's claims that "the production companies were working full blast at the end of the year to get titles out, took a break, and are now gearing up" rings very hollow to me. I can appreciate that there are limited resources available for getting titles out, but if they are working on titles surely Universal could announce titles and release dates, especially since the barren launch calendar is starting to become a real liability for HD DVD.

I think Universal is pretty much done with any serious HD-DVD support.

They'll put out the bare minimum they have to, to satisfy any contracts and keep things clean and neat, but I fully expect to see the first BD discs from Universal by Christmas of 07, if not sooner.

Too much easy money to be made.

talkstr8t, great point! Put that on AVS! These people over there need to wake up and smell the damn coffee, realize that they are being strung along and leave that sinking ship! If we want ANY HD format to survive and prosper so we can all eventually own the most titles, we need one damn format already. They are just stubbornly prolonging this war and maybe undermining everyone. The spin is in full swing at AVS with this insanely underwhelming announcement for them! This could very easily turn into Dvd-a/SACD all over again. Look what became of that. Everyone is happy to hear crappy, compressed mp3's on their ipod!

Someone needs to literally slap some sense into these people....

Universal may be still waiting some surcharge coming from somewhere in return for its title release commitment .

Dave,

Simmer down now!!!!

Some people are starting to "get it" every day over there. And let's face it, if they haven't seen through Amir's spin in the past, what is any opinion that "Talk" could post going to prove to the HD DVD crowd over at AVS? If anything, it will only harden them and make them more delusional.

This thing moves more and more in favor of BD every day, and when you have certain individuals over there buying BD (you know who they are) who were previous HD DVD fanboys, it speaks volumes.

Expect the rhetoric and spin to become louder and louder over there. Stick to the BD forums at AVS and let the HD DVD areas wallow in their own misery (you should of course read the HD DVD areas for pur entertainment value ). Finally, welcome and congratulate those who come over to the BD side; I did this with AaronSCH in the last few days.

Rio, you mean Universal doing an extended exclusive commitment with HD DVD in exchange for money, OR, waiting for something from the BDA in exchange for releases on BD?

I wouldn't think at this point that Universal has much leverage with the BDA, but they have all of the leverage with the HD DVD group. While I'm sure the BDA wants Universal aboard, Universal is quite literally the last in line to suckle at the BDA's t*t.

I would actually buy The Game, but I can wait until it comes out on BD eventually. I just bought 9 new Blu-Ray release titles today (6 of which are BD exclusives) so this paltry HD-DVD announcement isn't doing much to help their cause.

The Jerk is a classic comedy from that era. I do not understand why you and others would think otherwise. I guess you had to live back then to want to see the title again.

You're right. It is a classic title. I think what folks are saying (and I agree) is that this isn't a "must have" title, i.e. it's not going to sell hardware, etc. It's not as big as something like Spiderman on Blu-Ray.
