I presume the efficiency of the codecs in compressing the lossless signal to fit on the disc. Although the output is identical, the ability to compress a lossless track onto a smaller amount of disc space is a benefit as it opens more room to devote to either video bit rate, other audio tracks or features etc.

Lossless is lossless.
Indeed. +1.

There should be no audible difference whatsoever between soundtracks assuming they are the same bit rate, sample rate and number of channels. Sounds like a placebo to me...

I don't have to turn the sound on my receiver up as high as I do with Dolby.
... and that could be it. DTS-HD MA tracks are often mastered at a higher overall volume. More volume does not equal better quality though. Turn up your receiver 3-4dB or so for TrueHD and they'll probably sound the same.

I much prefer DTS and I know a lot of other people who do as well. Each to their own opinion of course.
I prefer DTS-HD MA too but for it's ability to fit 24/48 7.1 lossless soundtracks on a disc whilst utilising a fraction of the disc space required for a comparable LPCM track. Although TrueHD has the same capability we simply haven't seen as many discs released to the market with such specs.

Encoded sound levels have little to do with how soundtracks are mixed. Dolby, THX and others also know sound levels are very different between movie theaters and home theaters. In any case, DTS also has dialnorm and it's been used on several Paramount titles.

That's because to date nearly all 7.1 soundtracks have been remixed from the 5.1 originals. Most of the time you are not getting the original soundtracks as the film mixers intended.

Nonetheless the Shrek series, the Star Trek films, new DreamWorks Animation films, etc. have been remixed and coded in 7.1 TrueHD.

On the flipside, Fox has taken movies that played true 7.1 Dolby theatrically and downgraded them to 5.1 only DTS like The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Dolby TrueHD has the ability to carry separate 5.1 mix in it's bitstream. DTS does not, that's why Disney has had to have both a 5.1 and 7.1 version on movies like Toy Story 3 (and taking 5 megabits of bandwidth that could go towards the video). Worse, without optimized 5.1 channel versions those systems with 5.1 only output the 7.1 DTS puts both tracks - back channels and (side) surround channels - together, which can alter the discrete nature of the sound (since a lot of back channel sound is mono in nature). Since Star Wars will be remixed for 7.1, I'd say that's a big issue for those here.

Exactly! It depends on the sound design of the film.

Star Trek 09 sounds mind-blowing, as do many others.

I actually prefer Dolby TrueHD, because I don't get clipping, but with DTS-HD MA I sometimes do, if I have the volume up too high.

I do have a HT setup, and I can tell when something's got the full lossless treatment, but I can't for the life of me tell the difference between DTS-MA and Dolby True HD. I'm not usually "allowed" to have it loud enough to matter, really.
Another reason to vote TrueHD: it allows for "Night" mode (dynamic range compression). People who can have it full range can do so, and people not "allowed" as you said...or live in apartments or have smaller/limited systems can have full 5.1/7.1 surround at a decent volume without it getting too loud to disturb others.

For DTS and even PCM, you have to rely on a third party solution (like Dolby Volume) for those lucky enough to have it.

Most receivers do, though. But regardless, if you're that concerned about disturbing people, why not get an awesome (pricey) pair of headphones and enjoy the sound as loud as you'd like?

I want lossless, doesn't matter if its DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD.

Releases related to George Lucas:

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (Paramount, 2008)
Star Wars: The Clones Wars - Dolby TrueHD 5.1 EX (WB, 2008)
Labyrinth - Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (Sony, 2009)
THX 1138 - DTS-HD MA 5.1 (WB, 2010)
American Graffiti - DTS-HD MA 2.0 (Universal, 2011)

My theory is that they will be attached as "extras" to the eventual 3-D single releases.

Makes perfect sense - people like me who couldn't give a Bantha's Booty about 3-D and wouldn't buy them otherwise would snap them up in a heartbeat if they did.

As long as

it's in 7.1, I could care less if it's True-HD or DTS HD MA.

Oh well that gives us something to speculate over the next few days!
I just want official cover art for all three versions already!

Unfortunately, most of you will be unhappy with the set. I'm sure of it. You all expect too much. You will complain about something the same day it's released...maybe you will complain and moan about it on tuesday about grain, CG, etc. ...You know why? because most of the people who are buying the set are BluRay enthusiats but not real star wars fans. I am just happy to get the movies in bluray..try watching star wars on beta tape and then complain about it. I will love this set no matter what!

Well the reason I´m rebuying it on Blu Ray is for the improved PQ and AQ, so those should be good. I´m not expecting Avatar quality but something that looks very good none the less, which should be possible considering the DVD´s also offer quite some detail (for DVD's of course ). If I´m going to compare something with Beta tape I could just stick with DVD..

I for one think we are going to see and hear quality as good as or near avatars standard, but if not the movies should be better
