This is just where the press release on Tuesday came up short. All they needed to do was say "Brand New Transfers!" or "Remastered in High Def!" and this whole argument would be done and over.
I bet my left hand that the transfers are going to be first rate!
As you mentioned, they are releasing them on 3-D anyway, so they HAD to get new masters. The final ones!
I am very confident!

Yeah, but I'm sure that Lucas, himself, is overseaing the Blu-Rays. So, how the Alien set was handled really isn't much of a precident.

I am confident too. We should get some pretty darn good looking movies to watch in Sept. I don't really care for conversion 3D, so chances are slim I go to the movies to see any of the 3D releases. But I have to say I am happy they are doing them in 3D because it makes them rescan the films for Blu Ray. So its a win! Double win for some. If they weren't doing them in 3D my confidence would be pretty darn low..lol

To be fair, while there's no good reason to hold them back indefinitely there are likely sound financial reasons not to include them with this release.

I don't buy the arguments that restoring the UOT is no longer possible or would be prohibitively expensive but it obviously wouldn't be cheap either.

While a separate release of the UOT would almost certainly make money I don't think they could have tacked all of that additional expense onto the price of this release without losing more sales than they would have gained.

I certainly hope you are right! I have to say I´m a little disappointed by the special features on Disc 9. I couldn´t care less about fans in costumes or spoofs. I really hope there will be a lot more on discs 7 and 8 and disc 9 is a kind of bonus of stuff that didn´t find its way into the "real" special discs...

BUT, as long as the transfers of the actual movies are perfect and enhanced (i.e. digital Yoda E1) I´m very happy!

Spoofs can make for excellent extras. In fact, one of my first thoughts when the Apocalyse Now release was announced was that Martin Sheen's SNL skit would make a great extra.

To an extent I agree.

When/if he does ever get them restored for a release, he really should put some decent advertising behind them as well letting people actually know that they are the original theatrical versions.

I know that the sales of the 2006 individual releases weren't exactly stellar, but let's face facts. They were Laserdisc masters "dumped" onto a DVD, so it wasn't going to satisfy the enthusiasts who were aware of what the product was (many of whom probably already had 'unofficial' DVD copies made from laserdiscs anyway).

And the general public really wasn't aware of it. There wasn't really an advertising campaign behind that release. The 'main' discs were still the same 2004 discs. Most people who already had the 2004 release had no reason to pay any attention to individual releases sitting on the shelves.

If done right, the original versions would probably sell at least reasonably well, even if they don't do the same kind of business that this upcoming Blu-Ray release will probably do (and not because of what version it is, but because it's simply the first release of the movies in any version on the format).

And while I'm sure there is some cost involved, if I recall correctly, I'm pretty sure that he's gotten some offers over the years of people in the industry offering their services of restoring the films at a much lower cost, if not free, just because those people wanted to see them released again. If he doesn't want to put the money behind it, I'm sure he can find enough people who have the ability and talent to restore them who would do it for a discount just to have the original versions available again, and in hi-def.

It's not surprising that any one individual might rate any individual Star Wars film 5/5. You're right - no matter how good I think something is somebody somewhere will hate it and no matter how bad I think something is somebody somewhere will love it.

But given the sometimes wide disparity in tone, style and quality between the various SW films it is a little surprising that the same person would give them all the highest rating.

I'm not saying it's impossible to justify a 5/5 overall movie rating for the entire sage but I'd sure be curious to see how it was done.

Yeah, that DVD 'release' was a complete non-starter. Obviously we're all speculating here when we argue that the UOT would sell or would not sell but pointing to that release as evidence that it would bomb is just silly.

You guys have got to watch this clip:

http://www.slashfilm.com/lol-stephen...oying-america/

Stephen Colbert talks about the movies that are destroying America and the last 30 seconds of the clip (you have to watch the whole clip to understand where the reference comes from) where he talks about how "Star Wars (The Rebels) is really about a group of violent illegal aliens plotting to blow up a gated community (The Death Star)".

It's absolutely hilarious.

He could probably charge a little premium on a box set for the unaltered original trilogy if he ever decided to release it on bluray. kind of similar to the limited edition mono beatles box set.

It's ridiculous to think the UOT won't get released.I for one think you fans may have to wait a few years, but it'll be released down the line-possibly after the 3D BD.I can't see him making anymore movies, and SW OT is his legacy.

I have no problems with the SE,although it is kind of a cop-out to have Greedo shoot first-can you say political correctness.

Have a confession:Haven't even watched the DVD's I bought 6 years ago-apart for mostly empire strikes back, but hopefully will watch the BD's

Digibook releases could work too (though that would practically mandate individual releases which might work against them).

Yeah, there's definitely a hint of that in the altered scene. Lucas' stated reason was that after seeing that moment in '97, he realized it made Han look like a cold-blooded killer, and he was worried it would decrease the "role model" aspect of the character. As for my opinion, I always thought Greedo was going to shoot him at the table anyway, so the change didn't really affect my enjoyment of the film.

OK, how on Earth can you possibly have avoided watching those for six years? I remember going to my local video place, in Setember of 2004, waiting until midnight for the DVDs to be on sale. Thankfully, my cousin was willing to drive me, so we waited in line, I bought the set, we left...and then realized he'd locked his keys in the car. We were trapped out there, in the middle of the night, until 2:30 AM or so, when he finally got impatient and punched trough a small window, so he could reach in and grab the keys. (We'd called cops, at least one repair guy, nothin'.)

Mon Mothma: "We have learned that George Lucas himself is personally overseeing the final stages of the remastering for these Blu-Rays."

"Many fanboys died to bring us this information."
