Maybe all of these issues are creative decisions, just like the music being dropped in a shot on the Death Star attack in "A New Hope" - so why fix them? Lucas can go back, redo the shot of the approach to Mos Eisley, redo the Jabba shot, tweek "Greedo shooting first" again, recomposite the Rancor scene, but can't fix these minor issues, that any of us can fix? How can he not see these issues? He has new masters created for Indy, but uses old ones for SW. The work on the DVD's for both franchises weren't done that apart.

Lucasfilm claims that they've been working on the blu's for quite a few years. So what did all of that work get put into? The one disc of extras?

I'm tossing this out as a helpful expression of hope, rather then throwing in the towel altogether...because if the blu-ray set is the old transfer, I'm not buying, and will start looking into trying to purchase a new laserdisc player.
I get what you are saying Ernest, but then why would they include footage and a screencap from what appears to be the new transfer of Episode 1 but then use footage and screencaps from the 04 masters of the OT?

Maybe the new transfer for Episode I is a pre-existing item - created a while ago when fixing Yoda, so they have access to that, but everything else is new?

I don't know, just a guess. I'm just saying no Disney trailers resemble the eventual release, because they are using older transfers.

Agreed when other films have been released on blu-ray the trailers for other releases that come to blu-ray use the old transfers to promote them in the trailers that does not mean that it will be what the transfer will look like.

SO even for events like Comic Con Disney does this? Nice, gives some New Hope. Though I do find it odd that you are demonstrating a movie on a new medium yet you use the old medium to promote it.

Let's add a qualifier to the qualifiers, though - these aren't trailers, they're demos. The whole point of these sneak peeks is to show people what the BDs look like.

That doesn't rule out using materials that aren't actually on the BDs but it would make it an awfully odd choice.

You don't think it's odd that they use footage from the new master of Episode 1 in their promotions while at the same time using footage from the 04 masters of the OT in the same promotions? I sure do.

I would love to be pleasantly surprised and to have it rubbed in my face that I am wrong. I really would actually.

Educate me, folks - isn't that shot Adywan highlights from some kind of convention booth display with actors pretending to be rebels watching the Death Star approach? Meaning, kind of a gimmick? If so, I don't see how or why they'd be using the new BDs, and the people who put that booth together may have been forced to use the old DVD transfer to make their skit....I don't know...like I said, educate me, because I don't really know what I'm looking at in that shot.

Had this pre ordered since it was announced but have cancelled it today and so should everyone else, i'm sick and tired of George Lucas treating us the fans, the ones who have put him, the Star Wars name and his company where they are today like a bunch of cash cows who will buy anything with the Star Wars name on it.
He knows exactly what the fans want but will never give it to us as long as we keep parting with our hard earned cash.
I have bought the Star Wars movies on every format available at the time but enough is enough, these films are starting to become unrecognisable to the ones i adored growing up as a child and i refuse to line his pockets anymore in the hope that the next imminent release will be the versions we all want.
No amount of whining on the numerous forums dedicated to Star Wars ever seem to do any good so stop moaning and stand your ground and refuse to purchase another mediocre release from George 'the butcher' Lucas.

When Lucasfilm organizes an event to promote the blu-rays and impress fans with the high definition quality, one would expect them to use the new transfers and not those from 7 years ago.

Of course, unless those 7-year-old transfers are indeed the source for the blu-rays...

I cancelled my preorder too. Those extra features just aren't worth it to me. I'm just going to wait until they go down in price quite a bit. I might even just buy the trilogys separate once I see the actual box art (disc compartment).

But isn't that display some kind of "pretend you're on Yavin" thing? Meaning, it isn't like you're watching the actual disc, you're watching some sort of edited clip-show to make it appear like you're waiting for the Death Star to blow you up?

I'm just playing devil's advocate...I hope Lucas wasn't so cheap as to use old DVD masters for a new Blu-Ray, and I'm going to continue to hope.

Well maybe it bothers people because these are inferior versions. These problems never existed before 2004. The OT has had a substandard transfer done but the powers that be seem unwilling to admit that there are any problems. This is 2011, yet we get a 7 year old transfer. Now in these past 7 years the problems have become widely known and reported so the excuse can't be that they were unaware of them. They did admit that it was a bit rushed for the DVDs but come on, they have had 7 years to sort this situation out.

The only movie that is in any way close to how they originally looked is ROTJ. ESB is the worse quality out of the three. Not only did they crush the blacks but they brightened the image so much it destroyed any detail in brighter areas. It's a complete mess. Here are just a few examples showing how the Special editions originally looked vs the 2004 transfer (1997 Special editions on the left - 2004 versions on the right):

Now can these people that are always saying that anyone that is complaining are just "haters" and that there is nothing wrong with the 2004 transfers really say that these versions are the best the original trilogy has ever looked and that there is nothing wrong with them?

The footage they used was from the actual Blu-Rays edited to look like you are watching it on a display in the war room on Yavin. But the footage they used was definitely what will be on the Blu-Rays as this was supposed to show off just how good the Blu-Rays look. They wouldn't use the old 2004 transfer if that isn't what is on the discs
