You and me, and probably most people on here too. I'm really hoping to hold off until we get the blu-rays. I might do some A/B comparisons, but I'd rather just enjoy the movies on blu-ray!

I made a promise to myself to wait an entire year of no Star Wars as I patiently (yeah right) waited for the Blu Ray release. I almost made it too, until a couple of weeks ago I broke down and I made a promise to myself never to make any more promises to myself.

Maybe if I take my laptop and headphones I can still watch them in 720p when no one is looking.

It's just SW, my friend. You can wait a few hours to enjoy the discs.

Someone brought it to my attention so I am bringing it up, the runtimes for the films are different from what's on the dvds. I can't confirm at the moment.

OTOH, it's his sister's kid, not his.

Tough call.

Personally i think i will respect and enjoy the Blu Rays more if i watch just a little bit of the Dvds. That way when i put in the Blu Ray it will look even better then i imagined. Plus im sure spike t.v will have a marathon soon, they always do.

Why not put it in your cart yourself and see what the price is?

I gave in and decided to watch Empire today.

First time I've watched the films on my living room Panny. Started the film in THX Mode and was blown away. It's amazing how much better these films (or any films for that matter) can look on a properly calibrated display.

No garbage matte lines, Hoth was actually white in the majority of scenes and Vader's lightsaber was red!

Compared to what I saw previously on my (obviously improperly calibrated) bedroom TV, I was amazed, and these are the 2004 DVDs I'm talking about.

It actually makes me wonder if those complaining about the garbage matte lines, pink lightsabers and blue Hoth actually have their TVs calibrated correctly. I'll admit I was one of these people... until today!

That's not saying the colour was perfect in all scenes. Some Hoth scenes were blue, sometimes the lightsaber colours bled into the core, but THX Mode fixed a lot of issues that I previously thought were problems with the transfer.

Colour me impressed and really looking forward to the blu-ray release now

EDIT: I'll say right now, those screens of the garbage matte boxes are WAY too bright for normal viewing levels. Pumping the brightness/contrast up that high will reveal faults in any film.

Not sure why but this Monty Python skit has been running through my head...

[Show spoiler](Scene: The inside of the cockpit of an aeroplane. The door opens and a man in a neat suit enters. From beneath his jacket he produces a revolver with silencer attachment. He points it at the pilots.)

Gunman (Michael Palin): All right, don't anybody move... except to control the aeroplane... you can move a little to do that.

Hostess (Carol Cleveland): Can I move?

Gunman: Yes, yes, yes. You can move a little bit. Yes. Sorry, I didn't mean to be so dogmatic when I came in. Obviously you can all move a little within reason. There are certain involuntary muscular movements which no amount of self-control can prevent. And obviously any assertion of authority on my part, I've got to take that into account.

(The ensuing conversation is perfectly calm and friendly.)

Second Pilot (John Cleese): Right. I mean one couldn't for example, stop one's insides from moving.

Gunman: No, no. Good point, good point.

First Pilot (Terry Jones): And the very fact that the plane is continuously vibrating means that we're all moving to a certain extent.

Gunman: And we're all moving our lips, aren't we?

Pilots: Yes, yes.

Second Pilot: Absolutely.

Gunman: No, the gist of my meaning was that sudden... er...

Hostess: Exaggerated movements?

Gunman: Exaggerated violent movements... are... are out.

Second Pilot: Well, that's the great thing about these modern airliners. I mean, I can keep this plane flying with only the smallest movement and Pancho here doesn't have to move at all.

Gunman: Oh, that's marvellous.

Hostess: (joining in the general spirit of bonhomie) And I don't really need to move either, unless I get an itch or something.

(They all laugh.)

For example, if you do a pixel-by-pixel comparison of the two shots of the lightsaber scene, the background pixels are identical, all that's changed is the lightsaber hue.

If this was a different encode, this would not be the case.

"laptop & headphones"

For THEE release of the, well, the whole Blu-Ray format itself, to most people. The chance to see what you've been waiting ____ years for, & you could suffice with "laptop & headphones" ??!! Didn't you get this memo below?

STAR WARS - Minimum Viewing/Listening Requirements:

46-70" 1080p HDTV, or Projector/Screen
[Show spoiler](<--- Min. Screen Size: 84")

5.1 Audio System, though we "suggest" 6.1 to match the Audio settings
[Show spoiler], or 7.1/7.2 if you really wanna go crazy
.

Good comparison. Hopefully the OT looks & sounds as good as they can, & I'm confident they will be

Not in the case of the sabers crossing in front of Palpatine, we've seen the actual clip of the corrected version of that.

These aren't mockups either. The original writer clarified that days ago. If these were mockups you would see an extreme amount of cynicism about that by the authors of the last six or seven articles. The Yoda video is not from Star Wars In Concert either. I don't know where people are getting this stuff from.

Why would they release mockups of finished work?

For example, from people in the know, much more qualified than us:

To confirm, these are NOT screen captures from the DVD and Blu-ray releases; I never said they were. For those of you who think I created or “photo-shopped” them-----bless you! Sadly, my artistic talent doesn’t extend beyond stick figures, so I am flattered by your unwarranted confidence in my artistic ability. These are images from Lucasfilm illustrating some of the updates and changes made from the digital files used for the DVD release to the Blu-ray release. While I am fairly sure that they originated from the digital files, they should not be used to look for DNR, crushed blacks, resolution levels, or to find Waldo, but they should be used to see that there is no longer a puppet pole showing, that light sabers have changed, that there is more picture information on Episode I, and to represent the concept that a lot of work has gone into this release to fix issues from the previous DVD release. Any other use is not recommended or implied. Hopefully that will squelch any controversies, but since this is Star Wars, I may be expecting too much.

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/t/31...i-matthew-wood

and...

Obviously, the Prequel Trilogy is mastered directly from the original digital files - the actual final source masters that appeared in digital theatres around the world. However, I'm told that - particularly with Episode I - when the original DVD master was created from the source files, the state of the technology at that time meant that some of the image area was lost all around the frame. In other words, you weren't seeing the complete "film" image in the DVD master. Today's mastering technology corrects this, so you are now finally seeing the entire film image of Episode I on Blu-ray. Here's an example of what I mean. [Editor's Note: The following images were provided by Lucasfilm - they're not full BD resolution and so are meant only to illustrate the changes, not overall BD image quality.] This first image shows the image area on the original DVD version...

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...s/preview.html

What pictures are they referring to? Try this one for a start (no, surely not, I thought this was from the actual blu-ray, it is in the trailer and on the moments site and everything)

Noname.jpg

.....and relax.....can we PLEASE move on. No-one has seen the ACTUAL finished product. We all will in a few short days. (Yes I know you were at comic-con, but even that footage has now been amended due to the humdinger glitch)

..and to end the yoda debate:

You tube, uploaded 2007

vs 'new' clip

It may be longer, but EXACTLY the same footage.

Yeah, they're images from the Blu-rays that should not be used to evaluate the quality of the films because doing so against a compressed Jpeg would be retarded.

I'm not saying we should grade the Blu-ray or make assumptions off compressed videos or images, that's stupid. But to say they are mockups is entirely wrong. Bill Hunt even acknowledges that he believes they are from the digital files.

A mockup is when I go and take a picture, edit it to be representative of a change. The images are from the changes, that's different. It just is not a high resolution screenshot.

In the Yoda clips, you can clearly see a drastic difference in the source quality.
