Inception is better than both of those crappy movies, and probably better than star wars.

IMO the race itself is kind of cool, but it just seems like too much of a side distraction that did little to advance the plot in any way, which is kind of a great metaphor for much of what's wrong with the PT.

The whole trangent with the ship being damaged, needing a part, and Anakin racing just seemed like a big side-distraction more than anything. Yes, I know the bet that Qui-Gon made with Watto over the race is how Anakin ended up getting freed, but pretty much anything could have been written in it's place to free Anakin in a much faster manner.

The only other purpose that is sort of served, all be not very well IMO, was as some kind of very, very loose basis for there to be any remote truth in Obi Wan's comment to Luke in ANH about how Anakin was already a "great pilot" when he "first knew him." Which I kind of argue is BS to a certain extent since the pods, while hovering above the ground, are essentially land vehicles and not something that people are going to fly around in the sky, let alone space. But this goes with the many issues that I have with Anakin being so young in Ep 1 in the first place, but I'm not going into that tangent. (On the pilot subject, aside from this scene, the only other scene in the movie that 'establishes' him as a pilot is towards the end when he's in that plane/ship with R2, and half of what happens there is done by auto pilot, and the other half is pretty much him going "Oops" and doing things by accident... not exactly what I would call a "great pilot).

So while the pod race is kind of cool looking and all, it's just a lot of wasted time that could have been better spent on character and plot development, something that the PT IMO often didn't do very well. It's just one of many examples of "style over substance" in which the visuals outweigh the plot/story in the PT.

They're still Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi to me. I avoid calling them by "episode" number. It's another subtle way of "connecting" the PT to the OT via a naming scheme.
"Star Wars" and The Empire Strikes Back were called Episodes IV and V before Return of the Jedi was even released...

Agreed, the pod race (on the DVD) definitely needed to be shorter....no need at all to be that long. Did I hear it was shorter in the actual theatrical version?

Yes, and on the 2000 VHS and Laserdisc released. It wasn't until the 2001 DVD release that they added in a bunch of extended scenes, including the extended podrace sequence.

Episodes I - III have also been been subject to alterations from their original theatrical presentations, it's not just the OT.

The sandpeople are easily frightened and after that abomination they won't come back with greater numbers or at all.

Maybe in the opening crawls - but I'd never met anyone who called them by their episodes before the prequels came out. Always 'Star Wars', 'The Empire Strikes Back', & 'Return of the Jedi'.

Star Wars wasn't called "Episode IV" until the 1981 theatrical re-release. The Empire Strikes Back has always been "Episode V", from its first showing in 1980 on...

I'd rather watch Avatar any day of the week. Check out the Riffrax sometime. You'll never see Inception the same way again.

Yes, but both were called "Episodes" by the time ROTJ came out. So what I said was also correct.

Trust me, I know all the technical stuff too

Not prevalently is what I mean. Of course the episode numbers were there, but they weren't the "main titles" as they are now. Notice the recent emphasis on "Star Wars Episode _" in all the product marketing? It's meant to convey the "one saga" idea and to put the PT and OT under one umbrella. It goes back to the same reasoning as why Lucas put "Noooo!" in ROTJ - connect the trilogies.

Oy vey. This was actually one of my favorite small moments from ROTS; showing some real "return to form" maturity from Lucas, in the mode of Dreyer. I'll reserve judgement until I hear the VO, but this in concept bothers me more in its own way than the PT additions, even the "NOOOOOOO!".

Perhaps the closing montage will feature Obi-Wan ruminating ala Morgan Freeman at the end of Se7en: "Master Yoda once said, 'A fine place the galaxy is, and worth fighting for.' I believe in the second part."
