Good thing I don't shop online.

I found ANH and ESB as part of a 2/$20 deal (already have ROTJ).

If I bought online, I probably would have grabbed at least one of them off Amazon a few weeks ago

I saw a sample box yesterday in an electronics shop here in Australia, and the sample disc was the same as the ones in the US promo photo, so I'm betting that's what the released version will look like as well.

I'd just buy locally, but it works out at least $40 more expensive than the US one imported. (Bloody Australian distributors gouging us again!)

Not to be rude, but do you think a few minutes' worth of (mostly minor) changes are going to tarnish that fact? It's probably safe to say that about 90% of the original editing is still intact; Lucas hasn't changed that much of it. Most of what he's done ha been on a very small scale, except for a few moments like the Jabba scene in ANH, or the musical number in RotJ.
Any controversy would be instantly erased if Lucas released both the theatrical and 2011 versions.

Yes, views change over time. They also change when convenient.

I honestly to know whether this is the former, the latter or some combination of both but as recently as 2004 GL criticized Columbia for offering both black-and-white and digitally colorized versions of Three Stooges shorts because according to him the stooges belonged in a black-and-white universe.

Hypocritical? I dunno.

It's definitely ironic though.

Well, I guess that's the question. Does art, once it's released, belong still to the author, director, etc., or to history? I, personally, believe it's the latter - but, obviously, there's some divisiveness on that front.

As for the amount of material changed - as far as film editing goes (I am an editor myself), even the smallest change can offset the entire work. It certainly can lend a different feel to the structure, pacing, and tone of the piece.

I doubt that, because some folks would still be complaining about shots that weren't fixed, musical errors, or whatever else pops into their head. The fact is, Lucas doesn't want to have both versions on the market. That doesn't mean people have to like it, but 1300+ pages of complaints and debates won't change the matter. I think if the mods took all the bickering out of this thread, there'd probably be about 200 pages left.

Not those of us that want the UOT. We want those films, warts and all.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see that you're referring to Special Edition errors. I'm still surprised they didn't fine tune all those issues for this release.

I'd like to meet some of these film lovers who do actually care about films and not bashing George Lucas on the internet day and night.

Saw it. Ranks right next to Shakespeare In Love as one of the most over rated best picture winners ever.

100 YEARS…100 MOVIES – 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION #35

http://www.afi.com/100years/movies10.aspx
And Star Wars ranks were on that list? How many pages on this board will Annie Hall's BD release garner? 9 posts? Top seller on Amazon.com? Larf.

Nobody cares that Annie Hall won best picture in 1978 over Star Wars the same as nobody cars that now ancient and arcaic special effects won best effects. in 40 years no one will care that Crash won best picture and The King's Speach will be a Scene It question that stumps everyone.

Blathering on about how evil Geore Lucas is proves 2 things.... people have no real lives and world peace is simply a pipe dream. Get up, go outside and I don't know put your energies you wste hating George into volunteering at a homeless shelter or driving old ladies around on their errands. You film lovers did like that one, right?

Well, even though I grew up with the films on VHS as a kid, I enjoy the SEs, and really don't have a problem with them.

Quote:

Actually, I was referring to errors in general, whatever version they're in. IMO, Lucas should've reshot the Emperor hologram scene for "Empire" years ago, when he first hired Ian McDiarmid to play the role. The improvement is very good, but it still presents a noticeable style shift.

Well, I'm not entirely convinced that all these "leaks" are legit. So far, the only thing Lucasfilm's verified is Vader's added line for the ending of "Jedi". Time will tell, I suppose.

So that's the test of whether somebody gives a shit about a film?

Whether or not they backpack across New Zealand to climb Mt. Doom?

So who's worse, people that complain about a movie that they love that has been altered, or people that complain about the people that complain about a movie that they love that has been altered?

Also, are you typing this while feeding the homeless, and driving old ladies?

I've been a part of this too. I left for half an hour and came back and read over all of it again and felt like an idiot, but that's alright. Some people just look for arguments and this man found a lot of people who are clearly educated and inspired by great films. It's only natural we get defensive - no harm done, I'm sure.

Am I the only one who grew up with the 97 SE here? Sorry, I couldn't come to this world earlier.

I have yet to see the original cuts, but I will do soon, but of what I saw I think "my" personal favorite will still be the 97 version, I grew up with them like many of you grew up with the original one.

Would be interesting to see in a view years what those think about the original and 97 versions who grew up with the BD.

By the way: where the engines of the X-Wings also red in the original cut? Because, other than the light saber, I like the color of those engines being pink.

Me too. In a Blade Runner-style BD set, I'd love to have this version also included. I didn't get really into Star Wars until '97, when the Special Editions came out (I was 13 at the time). They're probably the versions that I get most "nostalgic" over - though if Lucas is determined to bury the originals, I imagine there's even less chance of these popping up again since they're definitely works in progress.

Your parents didn't have a VHS copy of the originals floating around the house? I guess its possible, but I would hope you are in the minority of the 90's fans... my younger brother knows the series through all of its incarnations thanks to my "guidance."

They probably will never have a chance unless they seek out pirated versions done for complete-ists online. The '97 version is as rare as hen's teeth now, and there was never a digital-era home video release. I still have my LD set (and even Phantom Menace!) but 15 years later, it is probably gone to rot.
