I honestly think both ways of watching are valid with their own perks and pitfalls, and are a purely personal choice. I remember when a friend of mine first showed his kid the movies, he did so with the PT first. According to him, the look on his girl's face when Leia gives Luke a heavy smooch in Empire was priceless.

I've got two of those myself. My loose figure, along with the old set and the other figures from it that I played with growing up. Then I've got a factory sealed original Cantina set w/ blue Snaggletooth. My mom was an antique dealer and always said she had a feeling about the Star Wars toys going up in value. From 78-85, she bought me doubles of every Kenner figure and toy made. One to play with and one to put away, never opened. I've still got an entire room across town at their house filled with everything. My dad has threatened for years to throw it all out. I just don't have room for all of it at my place.

Well, not in the arrangement of footage or under the titles that will be used on the new set. But there's no way the documentaries, for instance, will be saying anything new, unless you count the current party-line reframing of George's "original vision". I'm really over all that stuff.

Don't forget the 3D models and matte paintings that are not even mentioned as part of the extras list...

Even if most of the material (other than the deleted scenes) are just rehashings of old information, they are enough to make me want the extras discs.

Plus the new documentary with Kershner's last interview should be pretty interesting.

In your original post, you made it sound as if all the extras were "been there, done that," while I feel it's quite the contrary.

That was the point of my post

[Show spoiler]

I've got to disagree with you a little here. There were four behind-the-scenes documentaries on the OT back in the day. They included three of the four on the new Blu-ray set, making 'From Star Wars to Jedi' the only one never released past VHS/LD, which is odd, in my opinion.

The VHS set you referenced hasn't been sold in 19 years. It was from 1992, five years before the release of the SE's and seven years before the prequels began.

'From Star Wars to Jedi' is 65 minutes long. The last 40 minutes of it is exclusive material not covered in the other three docs included in the new set. Even the first 25 minutes of this doc, which featured quite a bit of info on the creature creation for ROTJ, had a slightly different focus than Classic Creatures. Those interviews I referenced are not included on any other Lucasfilm home video release to date. In none of the other home video extras to date has he again discussed the origins of Darth Vader, in terms of when he made the decision on who was in that suit.

That's why I believe that "From Star Wars to Jedi" was the only one of the four old-school documentaries not included in the new BD set. It contradicts the revisionist "history" Lucas is currently wanting us to believe. Star Wars (not "A New Hope") was not originally about Anakin/Darth Vader's rise, fall, and redemption; it was about the journey of an orphaned farm boy (Luke) finding his destiny.

Anyhow, the most recent release of "From Star Wars to Jedi" was on the Japanese CLV non-SE Laserdisc box set (PILF-2070) from 1995. Be advised that it has Japanese hardsubs on the documentary's picture, however. It's either that or the US VHS tapes from back in the day.

This is still on my holy grail list of laserdiscs to get. Some generous person has shared their videocassette copy with us on YouTube, but I just want to get my hands on the actual disc and play it on my TV if I can.

OMG. I just watched the first 20 minutes of The Phantom Menace. Despite only being 720p, it was just gorgeous. At moments it easily ranked up there with Tron 2 & Avatar. I can only imagine what the other two will look like.

Preorder cancelled which actually felt very liberating. Did any of you other heathen cancellers feel that?

I'm not closing the door on this though, although the reviews will have to be stellar (no pun intended) to get me to change my mind. If the sound is incredible and the PQ is reference then I may well relent and reorder.

Until then, as someone who grew up watching the VHS copies endlessly during the 80's and 90's, my upscaled 2006 DVD's of the OT look great and absolutely satisfy me on the rare occasions I watch them so I am in no rush for this, especially as the changes have quelled my excitement if not my total desire to own them.

I'm sure they're just going to luuuuv you changing sides/discs every 25 min or so.

The DVD 4x3 transfers are visually superior to the LDs. Same master...but gets rid of the herringbone, color noise, etc.

If your kids have iPods then they won't mind the lossy DD 2.0 tracks.

Holy shit, I can't believe I am saying this, but I really like that digistack. I love the book style of the Alien Anthology set, but I am not as sold on the book style for Star Wars. The art inside isn't that great, IMO. If this set ever gets cheap I may import the UK version or this set.

I cancelled last week, it felt great at the time then I caved in when I saw this in my gold-box for 5 bucks off on Amazon so I had a weak moment and ordered the complete saga again.

Damn Amazon and their Gold-box deals!!!

What if he doesn't have the 2006 DVDs? From what anecdotal data I've heard, it's getting harder to obtain them (or the 2008 thinpak set w/ identical discs) at retail.

I'm waiting for the inevitable price-drops from Amazon UK. If I could get the Alien Anthology set for $34, there's no reason to believe that the SW set won't get to $50 sooner or later. They're both region-free FOX boxsets, so it's not that farfetched a scenario. I'm mostly interested in the special features (I don't like the PTs and HATE the OT changes), so I've got a lot of patience for a lower price.

I can assure some of you that young kids will not a give a crap about the changes. Forcing them to watch the laserdiscs just seems a tad too... fanatical. They don't have the nostalgia factor like we do. And you're seriously kidding yourself if you don't think nostalgia factors in. It's no different with the Prequels. Most kids love the Prequels and the Clone Wars cartoon (Which, to be fair, is actually quite good) and prefer them over the OT. I do agree with showing them the OT first though. The reveal of Vader as Luke's father is too important and a big part of the whole experience.

I'm feeling great about it... at the moment. I've been very stern about making a stand against film alteration (to the point of going a little nuts ), and I feel that's helping me stay resolute (don't wanna come off as a weak-minded fool and all that ). Who knows, though - a month down the road, I may not even care about all this anymore and, God help me, I may soften up a bit.

For now, though, yes - I feel damn good about it.

That would be sweet. Black Friday is coming up soon here in the States and I bet it will drop big time then also but I had no patience, I must have NOW!
