I guess I'll find a new appreciation for Revenge of the Sith...looking foward to it .

The final grades is just about what I expected. Four Stars for video, and Five Stars for audio, Four-and-half Stars for special features, and Five Stars for overall recommendation. I'm curious to see how quickly the reviewer will get roasted by the angry fan(atic)s that are probably aghast at the recommendation.
I can hear it now. The reviewer didn't even know the name for Episode II calling it the Clone Wars so this does not count because they have no idea what they are talking about so they are clearly not capable to produce a qualified review of any movie.

BTW, I loved the review and can not wait till Friday!!

Very good review. Pretty much exactly what I thought after I started watching the set today. Well deserved 5/5

I already had every intention of buying the set regardless of the review...but to read Episodes III-VI PQ at a 4.5 rating..Damn can't wait to see it!

It's funny because when I read the review, for a second I imagined this great alternate reality where Episode II was titled The Clone Wars, and it was actually about the clone wars. And it was good.

In actuality, I'm buying the prequel-trilogy set when I can get it cheap. (30 bucks is probably acceptable). That's it. Its hard to explain, but although I think they are (for the most part) awful films, I still enjoy watching them from time to time as sort of nostalgic curiosities (same reason I own and watch the Joel Schumacher Batman films, and the 3rd and 4th Superman films). And if I'm going to watch them, I'd prefer watching them on a big screen in HD.

Great picture and audio quality aside, I really no longer have any interest in watching the reworked versions of the original movies. Not a judgment call on anyone who does, but I just am not interested in those versions of the movies. Casey said he'd rather watch this Star Wars than no Star Wars, but I find that a silly statement. I can watch the UOT whenever I want, just not in the greatest available technical quality.

Not about The Clone Wars. Did you sleep through the second half or something

Hmm, the screenshots from the review look nice. I'm still going to wait until Lucas one day releases the original versions, but that's good news for fans of the series how it is.
I did find it funny that Casey labelled it as a once in a generation event. Knowing Lucas, these films will be rereleased at least 2 more times. They'll be repackaged in slimmer packaging, they'll be given new special features, they'll include 3D versions, etc. Not necessarily a bad thing, one of the DVD rereleases included theatrical cuts(albeit sourced from a Laserdisc transfer, but still pretty fine looking on an upscaled dvd player)

Yes, yes, and yes again. I don't even need to write up separate audio reviews for each of the films. You know why? Because these lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1 surround tracks are perfect. Not perfect like, "Yeah, they seem generally true-to-source and, no, there's no muffling or anything," but perfect like, "Yes. Hell yes. This is what sci-fi should sound like." Perfect as in completely exemplary in all the ways you'd hope they'd be. Superlative. Grade-A. Certified Gold.
Haha! Thats what I was like after hearing the freaking main menu pop on for the first time!

No, they do not look fine upscaled...

The 2004 anamorphic DVDs look fine when upscaled, the "Theatrical" discs look terrible

I'm holding onto them for completions sake, but I can't imagine anyone wanting to watch them over the 2004 versions other than once in a while if they're feeling nostalgic.

The transfers were atrocious there's no other way to put it. The Laserdiscs themselves look better...

In the last paragraph of Casey's reviews his words nearly flawlessly say how I feel about people complaining about this set, and my sympathy for them. Enjoy people, life is too short to complain forever. Lobby for what you want. I think you'll eventually get it. In the meantime, enjoy.

That's what happens when you put a noisy LD-based transfer on a non-anamorphic single-layer DVD. I have both the 2006 DVD "bonus discs" and the 1995 THX "Faces" LDs, and I prefer the LDs (which have better sound as well, BTW). However, the DVDs are easier to play, seeing that you don't have to get up and change the disc 2/3rds of the way through (if you don't have an auto-flip player, you have to get up twice: once to flip the 1st disc 1/3rds of the way through, and then to put in disc 2.)

The smart thing to do is release a blu-ray of the HD deleted scenes from the other prequel DVDs that were not included here, and also include the scenes where 3PO got his coverings in AOTC, Beru and Padme's talking in the kitchen scene (Also in AOTC), and Kenobi's other meeting with Padme in ROTS. They could sell it for 14.99. I'd buy!
