While the RoTJ lightsabers are an improvement over the DVD, some of the shots have not been altered and look ridiculous:

I mean seriously, why did they just work on them all? The constant shifting between the new alterations and DVD sabers is puzzling.

Thanks, Mav! That's useful, for those of us who (still!) haven't decided which package to buy.

Does anyone know: on the inside, is that just a sheet that has Luke's picture on it, or is it a booklet? What's it say inside?

I'm in the UK and I picked up my Complete Saga box set yesterday. Watched Episode IV last night on my 42" Panasonic Plasma, in 5.1 DTS-HD LPCM.

I was very, very impressed overall. Detail is just amazing. You can see fingerprints on Vader's helmet! The colours are, indeed, oversaturated but it didn't bother me too much. At least whites are now white again! Also you can tell the grain isn't quite natural, mostly in the Tattooine (outdoor) scenes. But again nothing too distracting. Frustrating, however, when you see what Cameron was able to do with Aliens!

The new changes were fine. The R2/rocks thing, especially, works really well. And the "Greedo shoots first" has been tweaked slightly so it all happens a lot faster. So now Greedo still shoots first - but only just!

The sound was amazing. I mean - amazing! Williams' score, especially, is now fully restored and sits perfectly naturally in the sound field. Only very rarely is it lost under sound effects, and in those cases it was always so.

Delighted that the alien captions are now in the frame, and resemble the original film print. Annoyed however that Fox's usual "English" captions tag flashes on the screen slightly BEFORE the credits have properly finished. At least it's slightly more discrete than usual, and doesn't say "US-English Forced" or whatever, but really Fox, is this really necessary? This is a tag to help the disc author, it shouldn't be on the final product!

So as entertaining viewing, I'd definitely give it a 4.5/5. Which, to be honest, I wasn't expecting at all.

The Empire Strikes Back tonight!

Incidentally, the UK packaging so SO much better than its US counterpart. Proper disc protection! And if your player is set to region A (which mine is) it calls up the FBI warning and MPAA "PG" certificate at the start, so it's literally identical to the US experience!

I'm pretty sure it's a chapter list.

I'm a casual home video analyst. I like my movies loud, and pretty to look at.

That said, I'm not a technical genious... I'm actually running with a pretty old Samsung 5.1 surround system (2003) using the optical input.

So here's my ignorant technical question:
What difference will I hear in the sound quality/scheme with my 5.1 system, seeing that this is a 6.1 audio track.

Please don't flame my simplistic, and most likely, incorrect terminology.

Excellent read. The number of changes made since the original are staggering, and I doubt that anyone who saw the original theatrical showings can remember frame-by-frame what was added, removed and/or modified. Basically, some issues were addressed, some are still overlooked, while others that were never issues to begin with, are now.

There's no disputing that the Blu-ray screen caps are stunning: that was pretty much a given. For me, I could live with some of the technical alterations, but the audio changes are far more difficult to stomach.

The 6th channel (rear) will just be mixed into the left and right surround channels, and you won't notice anything being "off" more than likely.

No better time to upgrade though

I prefer it.Has more atmosphere. The twist in the DC and FC was neat, but as re-watchability goes,I prefer the theatrical cut.Only wished a lossless audio was included on that as well

I finally read Casey's review - kudos for the marathon he must have endured, especially while watching the special features. He was spot on the money about that irritating funky song; I'm not quite sure what was going through Lucas' mind at that point. But again, nice job Casey and a great review!

Well, as I first watched the film, I was conscious that the plot structure of AOTC would be the opposite of TESB (with the big battle at the end instead of the beginning). So I figured that the reversed panning was a visual cue that AOTC would be backwards.

At the very least, it mixes things up a bit.

So the general consensus is, across various internet sites, that AOTC and ROTS look great, TPM looks good but is slightly waxy at parts, ESB and ANH look slightly better than DVD, ROTJ has an out of focus sequence on Endor, the CG in the prequels stands out more than ever on blu-ray, a terrible sounding scream was inserted into ANH, Vader has an unnecessary and amateurish sounding "Noo" in ROTJ and Sebastian Shaw has been replaced with a burned Christensen?

I'm really torn on this set. I might buy it for the prequels and ESB and just keep my DVDs for ANH and ROTJ, but if the CG looks as bad as some people have been saying...

Confused as to why the bluray.com reviewer watched the CG The Clone Wars movie instead of Attack of the Clones.

Of course! One HAS to be getting paid by Lucasfilm to like the prequels, the changes or Lucas... Weird!

I only have the OT set,but ask yourself this: Do the money compromise other things, and does those slight annoyanses (Less than 1% of the movie) get so much on your nerves that it ruins your experience? If yes to both, then don't get it.I for one found the 4,5&6 movie less than reference, but still very good. Some strange anomalies, but not terribly much when considering age of the movies. The altercation in mos eisley cantina between Solo and Greedo is much better than the DVD where there was a significant timegap between the shooting. Here it is almost simultaneous.

Just my 2 kroners
