Bingo! While he was Sith, he could probably never quite fit that LAST piece of the puzzle but as soon as he was fell over after tossing ol Palpy off the ledge, he probably had an "ah ha!" moment of clarity.

The sound design of ROTS is completely deliberate, and more in keeping with the original trilogy which it leads in to (remember that Lucas wants us to watch it 1-6 now).

There's no reason the mythology has to be any more consistent, really. Just thinking about Hayden's dopey smirking face at the end of Jedi makes me laugh, hahaha. He has the acting chops of a 2X4.
I honestly feel bad for the poor guy.

He wasn't up to the task, but the whoooole world got to see it, and really he hasn't had a career afterwards. Everyone else has continued to get great roles but him and Jake Lloyd.

It's not his fault at all. Lucas and Co. cast him. He just auditioned and lucky for him, he got it. I know Lucas specifically went for an "unknown", but I mean commmme on. Hugh Jackman was an "unknown" before X-Men, but there's a ginormous gulf in the talent of the two men.

I also ponder how much of Hayden's brooding crap came from Lucas' direction. I haven't done any real serious acting but even the few things I've done with a director, I find it much harder to take direction on how to act something than to just do it how I feel it.

Maybe Hayden's take on him was much more nuanced and subtle, but GL was like "Nooo, I want to see REAL ANGER! Snarl a little and frown more!" and Hayden was kind of trapped in doing it a specific way he wasn't comfortable with.

That would explain why he's at least pretty good in Shattered Glass and the odd other role.

Finished ESB. The opening of the movie brought to mind the anticipation we had standing in line at the theater in May 1980, three (long) years after the release of "Star Wars". I am still awed by the incredible audio/video quality of the Blu-ray compared to any previous home version.

That doesn't make you an apologist at all, anyway, it's a pretty reasonable interpretation. Plenty of examples of serious hardcore "apologism" in this thread, hahaha.
Maybe you can answer me this inconsistency: In ALIEN a drop of acid-blood eats through several decks of the Nostromo - in the stupid sequel the creatures blood splatters left and right and has little to no effect...

Hayden was good in Awake ( was that the name of the movie?) The one where he wakes up in the middle of heart surgery. I thought he could act!!
Jumper was kind of cool.

Probably a very valid question for a thread about ALIEN.

Ever heard the expression, "two wrongs don't make a right"?

I don't. I think I'd take the flak for making the awful PT if I got to go to sleep on an enormous mountain of gold coins every night.

I just get a kick out of people seriously debating the finer plot points of the PT, shit like Jar Jar. Hahahaha, it couldn't be anymore awful.

EDIT: I thought you were talking about Lucas. That'll teach me a lesson about reading posts beyond the first sentence. Hayden... who knows. Without these movies he probably would've been a never-was rather than a has-been. He probably got a shit-ton for the two SW movies he starred in, too.

Aliens inherit properties of their hosts. Maybe it was "watered" down by all the human blood?

Or maybe they just didn't have the budget to melt everything...

I don't know that it does. Obviously that's how it looked to a lot of people but I never got the impression that transformation was primarily - let alone solely - the result of lightning damage.

I've only seen Sith a few times but that transformation always struck me as both more the result of corruption than direct damage and as an acceleration of an already ongoing process (even the early shrouded Darth Sidious seemed pasty and jowly and already somewhat down the road to the Palpatine we knew all along).

Do you think he did, though? Make enormous sums of money?

Without production credits, I'd assume these guys just get a flat rate, perhaps with a bonus at certain box office milestones, the exposure that being in the movies comes with (and the prospective roles that exposure makes available), and the guarantee of a steady job for a number of years.

I just think if they gave every actor a percentage they would run the well dry way too fast. Same with LOTR.

I thought you were talking about Lucas before I edited my post.

I like to read the first sentence of a post and pretend I know what the Hell is going on.

Dunno how much Hayden made, but I bet it was a pretty impressive sum. Without the PT I bet he would've been a never-was rather than a has-been, too.... I think the latter is way more preferable. It's obvious he's just not a very good actor, I don't think you can really blame Lucas' terrible direction for his consistently awkward, wooden delivery. Who knows though, Natalie Portman was pretty awful in them as well and she's very good otherwise. If Lucas did wreck his career, he simultaneously created and destroyed it.

I always felt like it was a reveal of his real self as well - just manipulating Anakin into feeling pity. It's a big inconsistency otherwise - and normally I just let inconsistencies be inconsistencies (you'll note I haven't participated in this debate thus far) - but I do think that was manipulation instead. Like the nice-looking Palps was just a mask overtop of the real one. All Mace did was get him to take it off.

I agree. Not the best filmed sequence regardless, or there wouldn't be confusion over how/why he was deformed (or revealed, or whatever).

But from my understanding, Lucas improvised a lot of changes to the scene on the spot (something he appeared to do a lot with the PT), and when you're dealing with complex choreography to match his virtual sets, I imagine it limits the ability to improvise effectively.

Yeah, true. I dunno. Hayden stuck out as just plain awful in AOTC, Natalie was well below what she usually delivers but still looked waaaay better than Hayden. It can't be all Lucas, but it certainly didn't help.

I mean Tarantino is a terrible actor, but his dialogue in "The Bonnie Situation" is so good that you don't really notice.

I guess two craptastic elements combine to make a sort of Crap Voltron!

I honestly think if Lucas had just kept the basic story arc of the PT (even though TPM to me is kind of unnecessary to the whole saga and could be skipped), but hired a director like, say even JJ Abrams, nobody TOO incredible, had David Mamet or Paul Haggis punch up the script, and hired someone with the talent of like, Ben Foster for the Anakin role, the whole PT could have been much, much better. Oh, and he would need to scrap most of the CG and totally remove the Jar Jar character.

Totally agree. Hayden is paintful in AOTC.

"I can sense everything going on in that room."

"It's worse. He's overly critical..."

"Excuse ME, your highness..."

Yeah the lines suck, but the delivery is just awful. I shouldn't be surprised, though, since he's playing an older Jake Lloyd.
