I hope that was a sarcastic comment. Have you ever seen The General? Everything in it is real, makes sense, and is EXCELLENT, and it was made 84 years ago.

Okay.
Just because one doesn't like the story of LOTR that means that we have to dislike the movies. I mean, I do NOT love LOTR, but I've seen them and I can say those are extremely well done and great movies.

Okay.
Because they filmed all three films at once and out of sequence for financial reasons I'm missing actors growing into their characters and portraying a convincing arc. Fellowship starts way too dark. We see Mordor, the volcano, Sauron and something similar to the final battle in the first couple of minutes. I'm missing the contrast that I really liked in the prequels where we start out with an innocent fairy-tale country, children and green meadows and end in total darkness an chaos. But, to each his own.

Yes, I asked her specifically after watching the Saga, because I was very interested how an outsider would think of the movies, and so on.
It only took like 10min., so it's not a big deal or anything.

I was shocked too, but she said Shmi was weak.

I said if she should have kicked the Tusken Raiders in the sw%%ts or sth.? Lol

She really loved ROTS.

She likes Jar Jar.

I call her Jar Jar all the time, because she is super clumsy. Lol

This is exactly how I felt as well. Heartbreak is a perfect way to state it.
Although in my case it took a full year of denial and fanboy love of SW before I finally admitted to myself that I was let down.

Okay.

Exactly. One minute it's this deep think-piece with all of this complex mythology and symbolism that some people "just don't understand", but then we are being shown how Lucas took old slip stick comedy and based characters around it. And we are all supposed to applaud this as being a good thing for some reason, all simply because it's Lucas's vision and he created Star Wars in the first place.

Because it's not like the same person who wrote a good first movie never made a bad sequel/prequel, nor has there ever been a scenario where someone else has made a good sequel/prequel to something that somebody else created in the first place.

Matrix was a great Trilogy - especially Reloaded.
LotR was a missed opportunity IMO (the books are far better).
I liked Terminator Salvation, X-Men Last Stand and First Class.
My favorite franchise apart from Star Wars would be Planet Of the Apes.
Salvation was a travesty. I would take Underworld and Twilight (including New Moon) over Salvation any day. Pirates, I like Pirates minus the third one. The third one was a travesty but Salvation may be more so. Heck, I might actually take Ghost Rider over Salvation, why? Because at least Ghost Rider is dumb through and through while Salvation is just a complete mess of what should have been incredibly awesome. Squandered opportunity.

I don't like Jar-Jar. You don't like Jar-Jar. But to assume no one can get anything out of Jar-Jar because you don't is incredibly short-sighted. Again, it's the flip-side of the coin whose other side says 'Jar-Jar is the most fully realized character in the history of human endeavor.'

I did like seeing the young Arnold on the T800 though. Because he has no dialogue in those few seconds, that was the best CG facework I have ever seen. Totally convincing.

Otherwise, the film was a big flush.

WTF?!

That one line was pretty much a parody of Yoda.
The "Good Relations with the Wookies, I have" line was the one that crossed over into parody for me.

I disagree on the coin metaphor. Saying that nothing can be gained from Jar-Jar's character (except perhaps to make 5-year olds giggle at the funny lizard and buy action figures) results in a vast majority of agreement, and rightfully so. Saying Jar-Jar is "the most fully realized character in the history of human endeavor" is grounds for involuntary commitment.

Without Jar Jar who would have been stupid enough to make that call in the senate?

Who the hell would have put him in a position in government anyway!

When Han said he could arrange Leia kissing a Wookiee, perhaps he wasn't referring to Chewie, but to Yoda's Wookiee booty-call service...

They are just movies, but then again......they aren't. God, now I sound like Harry Knowles. Whatever. Onward! A simple movie doesn't inspire an entire generation of kids. So what you are seeing here is denial and bitter heartbreak on a CULTURAL scale. When these things get re-released and treated with disrespect by the guy who made them (the 2004 DVD xfers) it PISSES US OFF. So we come out here and *****. Because the emperor either never had clothes on or decided to trade them in for a Barney suit. The original sw films were a once in a a generation type of experience. But we couldn't know that as kids. We believed Lucas could pull it off again. He made it look so simple before. And it was just SO, SO different from what he had set us up for.

I'm glad at least some people liked them. But running around saying "I love Jar Jar! He's better than Han Solo anyday!" is just a lightning rod for us bitter denial-ists. Hey, speak your mind of course, just be prepared for the backlash.

There are real tragedies out there and many truly terrible things to legitimately worry about - but that doesn't make being punched in the heart any easier. And that's what it was.

I hate to admit that a series of children's films could have the kind of lasting effect on me that SW did, but whatever.
I like what you say here. And I shouldn't have made the Shatner analogy. I was being flip, and I know people are passionate about these movies. I am, too. I don't agree with certain other parties' attempts at trying to convince anyone of anything along the lines of 'you should like these movies, because their rife with symbolism.' But making fun of people for what they like isn't the, um, Jedi Way, either.

I guess having had a kid and having been around a lot of kids, I see no evil in somebody coming to ask what I think are deeper questions about life by way of thinking Jar-Jar is funny.

I saw the original when I was 7, and I think I came to understand what I think God is because I first understood something mystical that I can't see called The Force. I'm still pretty grateful for that.

For me, Menace was watched in complete silence, but everyone let out a really surprised "Whoa!" when Maul broke apart into two pieces.

On Clones, people shifted around in their seats, whispered, giggled, and let out uncomfortable sighs during all of the romance scenes. The rest of the viewing was in silence as well.

On Sith (also watched with seeming emotional detachment by the audience), people were rolling when Vader cries out "NOOOOOOO!" It was embarrassing really, because it was the kind of laughter that was not about humor, but about release. It was as though we were finally glad the whole thing was over with. Please just let the credits roll and we can all pretend none of this ever happened.

Considering the position that the Republic was in... quite a lot of people. Especially given how they embrace a Dictatorship in RotS.

As for the other point. He was a General who was key during the Battle of Naboo. And also, have you seen RL politicians?

He's less of an embarrassment than people who get caught in sex scandals, gay sex scandals, and who can't spell Potato.

Having Jar-Jar introduce that motion in the Galactic Senate which lead to its destruction is a metaphor.

Unfortunately, it's a metaphor of how Lucas' creation of the PT led to the destruction of Star Wars as we knew and loved it...
