No. The story is the same, just some character development is sacraficed (mostly Solo and Jabba have a tweak or two that makes one not so roguish and the other not so fearsome, to some that is deal breaker). If you want to experience them the way original theatrical lovers did, then just watch the OT before you watch the PT. While the entire Saga works as a whole, some of the surprises in Empire and Jedi are (IMO) best experienced before viewing the PT. The only thing you may notice is some of the special effects look a little out of place (some of the CGI doesn't meld well for whatever reason). But other than that, you are going to enjoy yourself, so get the Blu Rays.

I can't believe people are saying ROTS is reference quality & it's being compared to Avatar in some circles The digital noise is so distracting I'd rather watch my DVD copy of ROTS instead! The other 5 films look great on my Sony though.
I've been hesitant to join the forums but since this came up... I'm from a European country and I noticed when I rewatched ROTS with the archival commentary (which was a great listen btw) that the background in the scene where Anakin lands on Mustafar seemed to "rock" (in the lack of a better word) to and from with white-ish streaks (from about 1:33:00 to 1:33:06 around when Anakin tells R2 to stay with the ship towards the end of the shot).

I wondered what the heck it was and watched the entire movie closely and found another scene where something similar happened, the scene where Bail arrives at the Jedi temple and is turned away by the clone troopers (just after Smits's line "And so it is." and as he turns to walk towards the speeder at 1:24:52 and a few seconds forward). The difference here is that the scene seems to shift in and out of focus but no white streaks or other color effects are visible. Needless to say, I can't see those issues on my Region 2 ROTS DVD (though the resolution is lower of course).

Have you guys spotted similar issues in the scenes I referred to above? While this is something I can live with, I've considered either to contact the retailer or to buy a PT box set but I thought I'd have a look around first to see if others have experienced similar issues as it's a waste of time and money if this just isn't a faulty disc.

EDIT: My BD-player is a Sony BDP-S370.

I'm not sure if its a faulty disc or not. I'd list the scenes where digital noise is apparent, but it's far to numerous to list for me. The scene on Padme's balcony, just after Anikans nightmare is terrible on the copies I've had. There's noise all around Padme's body and on some of the background skyscrapers on the right of the frame the noise is so bad you can't see any detail whatsoever, just black skyscrapers with white noise all over them. Needless to say it's unwatchable for me because of these issues.

Maybe I just got unlucky and got two bad discs. It would be good to hear from other members to see if their copies are flawless in picture quality as a digitally shot picture should be or if there are unreported problems with the transfer. BTW, when I say white digital noise I'm not referring to a film grain like appearance, but white specs all over dark colors like blacks and browns. Almost like a digital snow or something. Any thoughts?

Didn't noticed anything on my copy.

And concerning the Arrival at Mustafar, didn't see any white lines. Only things I see are the dots of fire flying and the white smoke

As for the white lines, are we talking about aliasing here? Because that does pop up on discs from time to time and some TV's are more forgiving than others...

The only thing I've noticed about ROTS is how fake and compressed the backgrounds look.

While I can't say it isn't aliasing it really doesn't look like it (and it's the only disc I've seen showing this issue and it doesn't show up on the DVD). I must take a close look later and see if there's a setting on the television or the BD-player that I've forgotten to turn off (I've of course disabled all the motion interpolation).

Thanks!

I noticed this with Clones last night.
I went to go and point out the most useless Jedi ever (Colman Trembor I think is his name, he's the Jedi council member that gets shot by Jango)
When Mace walks in the hallway it's much easier to see the super-imposing that was done.

Yes, I checked that and people DID notice it.

Even though I support SE, sometimes I just can not understand people like you, who pretend that changes to the films are minor, are for the better etc. The problem with them is that they are not done properly. At one point, we almost have visuals from the prequels, at another we are stuck with 77, 80 and 83 effects. Also being ignorant, spreading propaganda that OOT is VHS quality - it cleary shows that you know nothing about filmmaking, you have no idea about 35mm film, scanning technology, camera negative and so on.

I won't even bother to talk with such "experts" about technology. It's like talking with people who say, that there is no difference between BD and DVD.
Wow! Take it easy, bro!

I never said the OOT is VHS quality. Perhaps you should read my post before replying with insults.

As far as I know the OOT is only LEGALLY available on VHS, isn't it?

I know that there are rips, and fan edits, but that doesn't count for me.

No, people who no nothing about the SW movies won't notice anything different. Is that really so hard to understand?

And yes, people are that stupid. In fact they are much dumber than that. Sad but true.

Anyway, I deeply appreciate sharing your infinite knowledge in this instance, and shedding light on those dark corners of my vastly inferior mind.

Btw., I think the OT on BD looks better than the PT.
Although I like both looks, except for TPM, of course.

Don't worry, I'm taking it easy .

OUT (Original Unaltered Trilogy) is LEGALLY available in better quality than VHS. It is available on Laserdisc with much better quality and PCM audio track. As a very few people nowdays own a laserdisc player, OUT is also available on DVD, but sadly only in Laserdisc quality, as it uses Laserdisc master. Also, it only does have an compressed Dolby Sorround audio track, just like on others DVDs.

I'm not talking about versions not available legally, altough in picture and audio quality, they surpass every LFL release, including new released SAGA on BD.

As for people who notice anything - you didn't say about people who never saw SW. You said that only people who saw them 10000 times will notice the changes. Which is simply not true. But it doesn't matter anymore. I enjoy the movies, altough it could have been so much more and better.

You heard it here first, folks!

If you notice defects or find faults in a BD it's because you hate the movie.

Seems logical to me.

Sorry to say dude but the Original Unaltered Trilogy has never been released for any home format. The laser disc is the closest thing we ever had.

They were released on DVD, but as crappy, non-anamorphic "extras".

You have digital video noise on ROTJ?

No, I think you have grain on ROTJ. And that's a good thing.
