I can't find any info on how to get this to work, and from the small bits of info I've found, I don't think it will work, but I figured I'd give it a shot.
I have an Actiontech (sp?) router provided by Verizon. The range totally sucks balls. My router is downstairs and the internet connection barely works upstairs . . . we're talking the router is literally right at the bottom of the stairs, and the room I want to be in upstairs is right at the top of the stairs. So . . . I want to use my Netgear Rangemax router instead of this POS Verizon one. How do I do this?? Everything I've read has implied that I need to use the Netgear in conjunction with the Actiontech . . . I'd rather not daisy chain them like that, as it would look rather ghetto where I have it. Plus . . . it just seems stupid to have two things to serve one purpose. Any help is appreciated. |

From what i read at
www.broadbandreports.com Try to get the installer to run CAT5 inside your house and you can use any router you want, but if they run coax you will be stuck with the router. Also you get stuck with the router you can piggy back you other router of it, and disable the wifi on the actiontech. P.S. Lucky dog, i wish i could get fios. |

I already have Cat 5 installed . . . no dice. How exactly does the daisy chain setup work . . . I don't want to do it, but my range is freakin' horrible. Hopefully the range on my Mac ill be better . . .
Josh, just out of curiosity, why would one buy an Airport Extreme? Just wondering, I'm just getting into the Mac world. |

And about the CAT5, what i mean is they have to run CAT5 from outside your house to the location you want the cable for you to use your own router. |

As soon as you plug it in, your Apple computer will recognize it, and then its as simple and adding passwords and labels, and then you're good to go. So painless its worth the money. |

I'll find out Monday on this -- as my Fios will be installed then.
I'd assume as long as you have DHCP or at a very minimum a static address you can use any router as long as it's CAT5. Once I get it installed Monday, i'll let ya know. ![]() To those that are plugging in the router, do you know if you have DHCP enabled -- is it picking up an address? Can you ping IP but not domain names? Also can you log into their router to see if it's set static? If static, copy the IP/gateway/netmask/DNS and set it up in the router that way. |

It looks like you can use PPPoE through any router that supports it for your FIOS, only if you don't have the TV service..
I'll give it a shot with my D-Link monday and let you know the results as I did not ask for TV service. ![]() Personally I'm not comfy with any router that I didn't buy myself and have never used isp 'supplied' routers. |

Ouch, vertical scaling with wireless routers can be painful. Does your existing router already 'work' from that Point to the destination point? The benefits of MOCHA installs versus the old installs are far too great to get around. As other's said, you pretty much get 'sucked' into the daisy chaining method. If you can convince the rep to do a Cat5 install [and thus take twice as long on the job], go for it. But, well, I really wouldn't think of it as much different than how I have to 'daisy chain' my router off my cable modem. |

Bringing up an old thread here . . . I've got T-Mobile @ Home set up with T-Mobile's/Linksys' router in a daisy chain setup. However, I think the Actiontech is causing a lot of the issues I'm having with the T-Mobile @ Home (when power goes out it takes forever for the phone to work, I have to monkey around with the firewall settings, changing from high security back to low for it to work again, and others). I've looked around for how to basically disable the Actiontech so that it basically serves as a modem, but everything I can find is limited to using it as a bridge ONLY if you have a regular coax connection. I have Cat5. So . . . basically I need to know how to disable everything on the Actiontech so that it's essentially a modem, if possible. Thanks!

I ended up setting up the Actiontech as a wireless router, and then running a hard line to my Apple wireless router. The Apple is much faster (Wireless-N), so that is my primary, but when it drops (it died for about a month after a horrible update) I have the Actiontech on standby. Its come in handy a few times.
