Yeah right, you probably have a picture of Carrie Fisher that can stick to the wall all by itself.

Kidding. I am 40. Only. And as long as I can keep food on the table my wife does all the worrying and lets me post in the Star Wars thread on blu-ray.com. I'm planning to get less mature as I go.

The OT really needs a NEW 4K re-master the detail in the current release is a bit underwhelming and there's some really bad artifacts from sloppy remastering in some scenes like the grain in the scene on Tatooine when C3PO and R2-D2 first arrive there. Also the current re-mastering job was only done at 1.9K and just comparing it to the 4K Bond remasters and the 2K Bond remasters show a vast difference in picture quality and detail and they were both done at the same time. I don't get how George Lucas is a billionaire from the movies, merchandising rights, owning ILM, Lucas Arts and Skywalker Sound but still cheaps out on remastering 3 movies while EON Productions/MGM payed for 15 or more remasters of their Bond movies. It even shows with the current master of The Phantom Menace that looks like it went to the lowest bidder.

I don't think Lucas really cares anymore... He was even going to do sequels, but said he wouldn't do it for anyone anymore.
The same would probably apply for putting effort into the existing films...

To be honest, I kind of agree with him. He might have messed around with all the films plenty.
And the argument as to if he has the right to do that or not will probably always remain.
But while I think he simply, for the most part, within reason, does have the right to do whatever with them,
I think, with all the criticism, he shouldn't have to put all the effort into these releases. I mean, I wouldn't take it either...

On the other end, if he'd do it completely right just one time, come out big with the best of the best transfers
of the original films as they were back then, he would probably make peace with the fans again.

Guess he just chose to get the BD-releases over with and people could just "suck it" until the next release. :P

What's interesting is the Indy movies underwent 4K transfers, but that was probably because of Spielberg as his movies generally look top notch although Jurassic Park used an older master.

Indy looked better than Star Wars on DVD too. I expect similar results from the Blu - I have very high expectations for that set.

Star Wars is satisfactory - the features are great though, just poorly organized. Those are way better than what we got on DVD.

There are screenshots of the Indy HD broadcasts which used the 4K transfers and they look phenomenal.

I would say the original Star Wars looked pretty decent on Blu-ray, but as has been mentioned a million times, you'd hope for state of the art transfers for such a franchise.

I would have said it the other way around. Even with all their 'problems' the Star Wars DVD's for the original trilogy looked fantastic. The Phantom Menace didn't look great though and I think AotC was a little soft if I remember. Indy looked great but it didn't have that 'wow factor' that the original trilogy had.

I was only considering the OT DVD's, not the PT. But the PT was fantastic on DVD (and also great on Blu, imo - the PQ on TPM not withstanding). The OT has left something to be desired on every format for me, although I haven't seen the Laserdisc. Indy, on the other hand, has always left me fairly satisfied. Contrast was a little touchy on Raiders if I remember right, but otherwise I was and am a happy camper.

Not to rag on SW or this set - I'm glad we have it, it looks pretty good and sounds great. I just thought Indy was nicer overall on DVD and expect a more filmic translation on Blu than we got for SW.

Topher Grace recently took the three Prequel films and edited them to create one movie to create a better, more cohesive film. It was a private screening for friends and Hollywood insiders, apparently. I had no idea but I heard it on the news driving into work and thought it was interesting. How he managed to harvest 85 minutes of decent stuff from the prequels, I have no idea. He cut out Jake Lloyd and Jar Jar completely, hahaha.

Slash Film was there and did a rundown.

Quote:
And the result? Topher Grace’s Star Wars film is probably the best possible edit of the Star Wars prequels given the footage released and available.

Whats most shocking is that with only 85 minutes of footage, Topher was able to completely tell the main narrative of Anakin Skywalker’s road from Jedi to the Sith. While I know the missing pieces and could even fill in the blanks in my head as the film raced past, none of those points were really needed. Whats better is that the character motivations are even more clear and identifiable, a real character arc not bogged down by podraces, galactic senates, Jar Jar Binks, politics or most of the needless parts of the Star Wars prequels. It not only clarifies the story, but makes the film a lot more action-packed.

In other news Topher Grace just debuted on Lucas' shit list.

Do you think the OT will get 4k remasters for the 3D releases, or they'll use the blu-ray masters? We can only hope!

I posted links two weeks ago mate!

I can't see Lucas been overly bothered, I think it was more an editing exercise for Grace than a kick in the nuts to George. Eventually Lucasfilm will release all the original trilogy footage when technology advances and customers will be able to make their own versions including kick-ass '80's soundtrack....

Hahaha, I had no idea. I heard someone mention it on local radio no my way to work and I didn't even bother to check the date, I just assumed it happened within the last couple days. Guess they were late to the party.

If by "wow factor" you mean horribly overblown colour, boosted contrast and obvious artefacts relating to Lowry's tinkering, then no, Indy did not have the "wow factor" of the OT DVDs - and thank **** for that.

The upcoming Indy Blu-rays will destroy the OT Blu-rays for picture quality. Brand new 4K scans vs. 8-year-old HD transfers, there's no contest.

From a technical standpoint, then yes that would be the most logical (and cleanest) procedure for the 3D conversions.

But this is Lucas we're talking about.

It's sad that Lowry take a lot of flack for the 2003/4 transfers, because they simply work to what the customer wants. Within the ridiculous time-frame that Lucasfilm gave them and the obvious 'artistic choices' (facepalm) that altered the films looks, then they did an OK job.

Let's not forget though that around this exact same period, MGM had sent the James Bond films to Lowry for restoration, and you only have to see those spectacular efforts to understand that the state of the Star Wars films is nothing to do with old technology, but rather the parameters that Lucasfilm chose. A 2K scan was likely cheaper, faster, and only reiterates that if you shoved a rock up Lucas's fat arse, he could turn it into a diamond.
