Lightbulb Should Remote Controls be backlit?

I was reading about the Sony BR5 HDTV and the remote control actually has a [light] button. But I haven't seen how it looks lit.

Natually, I believe blu-ray remote controls should have a light button, and be backlit in blu. Duh.

Glow in the dark is nice, but a light button is so much cooler. Who agrees?

I operate all the ones I use frequently by touch so I don't need to be able to see the keys on the remote.

I think all home theater device remotes should light up. You're meant to watch movies in the dark. My biggest disappointment with the PS3 blu-ray remote is that it doesn't illuminate. Poor judgment call on Sony's part, IMHO.

I'd prefer no lights... save the batteries... let the remote live longer :-)
Annoying little lights every where... like LED's on phones, stereo, cameras..etc... can't fall asleep without a million dumb little LED's flickering or flashing somewhere in the bedroom or house... hehe. I don't need the extra indication that i've pressed a button... seeing the channel change is good enough for me.

My Onkyo receiver remote has a light. Big button on the side I can press to turn it on. Love it by the way. Lights up all the buttons and they're very easy to see. Then I just turn it off right away so no battery wasted.

While the commonly used buttons I can hit by feel, for the less frequently used buttons an illuminated remote is almost a necessity in a front-projection home theater.

My current favorite is definitely the Harmony 890, motion sensitive activation, replaceable rechargeable batteries with a nice cradle and RF.

My Anthem processor remote does light up if I pushes any button on it and I like that more than any other remote I own.

+1. I wish that the RMT-B101A that comes with the Sony BDPs' lit up, but since I use a Logitech Harmony 880 and all the controls are backlit the factory remote not lighting-up its no big deal to me. Still, it is a feature that makes sense. The manufacturers could always add the ability to turn the backlighting off too. And it wouldn't cost much to add either.

Get a Logitech Harmony 880 - all the controls are backlit in Blu, and the but remote automatically goes into "Sleep" mode (thus all lights turn-off) after a predetermined delay. The delay is set by the user.

And since the 880 uses a rechargable Li battery pack I never worry about killing the battery power. In my experience it takes quite a while to drain a full battery.

Keith

Seeing as I only use 3 remote controls at once, I haven't invested in a Universal yet; but the Philips TV remote is backlight quite well. Albeit, the 30s, the Sammy HT's, and the Blu-Ray remote on the PS3 are not. Fortunately, I think I've got all their layouts down pat.
