I got that part...

But I've heard somewhat conflicting reports of what that actually means.

My forgiveness can't be bought at that, or any, price. What I want above all else is a formal apology and, most importantly, the films themselves. He can keep the money.

There is still a Lucasfilm. Disney acquired the Lucasfilm company just as they acquired the Pixar company. There is still a Pixar, there will still be a Lucasfilm. Kathleen Kennedy is becoming President of Lucasfilm.

I would like to see An unedited version of the original Star Wars Trilogy on Blu-Ray but I don't see it happening anytime soon. I don't see why this is such a huge issue it's not that big of a deal the current blu-rays of the saga is good enough. I think a lot make a big issue out of this for nothing.

I definitely don't want to get into a SW argument (We know there are plenty of those in many forums), but I would love to see the originals as they were in the 70s -80s.

Han shooting first, no birds beak on the sarlacc, no "NOOOOOOOOO!", no Haydensen in Jedi etc etc....

Oh man!

Just thinking about the original 'color grade' alone.

It's not for nothing, and for some people the issue is bigger than it is for you.

Honestly while some of the changes aren't that bad, others are pretty terrible. That combined with some of the changes that I can conceptually understand Lucas wanting to do being poorly executed makes the newer versions hard to watch sometimes. For example Ian McDermott as the Emperor in Episode V... the change makes sense, but he looks too much like Ep III Emperor and not enough like the skinnier, older Ep VI Emperor... Between make up and CGI they could have done this right, but instead they just decided to have him apparently do this scene in his Ep III make up and Lucas deemed it "good enough" as he has with many other half-assed changes (i.e. Jabba in Ep IV which even after redoing Jabba in 2004, the creature still looks bad, and Han gets all blurry and looks awful when walking around him and stepping on his tale).

Then there's the still existing color timing issues. And then there's the effects that Lucas never updated like the lightsabers... particularly in Episode IV (and I mean updating the overall effect, not just attempting to correct/hide the issues that the color timing changes caused on the previous DVD releases). They look all blurry and blotchy at times. He sees no need to fix this, but having Vader yell "NOOOO", having the Ewoks blink, and updating the stupid noise that Obi Wan makes were somehow much higher priorities.

It's almost a joke and a farce anymore. While the original versions have their flaws, at least they were made with him getting the most out of what he had to work with at the time. The updates that have happened since, especially many of the ones from 2004 and 2011 (thought a few from '97 were also bad), have largely been exercises in half-assed mediocrity. Lucas wants to make these updates, but only to the point that they are just barely "good enough" and that it doesn't cost more to make than the amount of loose change he happens to have in his pocket at the moment.

Besides, why are you hung up on this issue anyway? Shouldn't you be getting a head start on repeating how you are "Looking forward to seeing Star Wars Episode VII in theaters in digital 3D with (insert some multi-channel surround sound format here) in 2015" over and over again for the next 2 and a half years? (just kidding with ya on that one)

I guess this thread has probably been up in arms over the Disney-deal for a whole load of pages right?

Well, I just wanted to say, although I am not this huge fan (and perhaps, even if I were, I'd say the same), that I'm looking forward to the next movies.
Because for one thing, I'm far past tired of all this crap between the old and new movies, that George Lucas ruined everything and such things.
Might be, might not be, I have to disagree on the hate on the man for one thing, but that's a different story.
I just consider this a fresh start. Lucas has thought about it and opted out, not wanting to do any more movies because he got shat on, I agree with him.
I feel bad for the guy, he might have made some creative mistakes, but this was his dream-project and now fans want to lynch him.
And don't give me anything about the amount of money involved. Sitting on billions while being shat on doesn't make you feel good.
But anyway, who knows, although it's "Disney" now, this might just be the turnaround that the franchise needs.
If anything it can't become any more "Disney" in terms of... well, what it was criticized for, how characters were made to sell more toys and stuff.
And when it comes to the movies, the creative content of the movies... Has Disney not been good with stories and the darkest content?
Just think of what all has gone under the Disney brand and company. I'm pretty sure they realize this is a HUGE franchise with a HUGE fanbase.
And unless they're focusing on the animated series for example, or the sales of the toys, I'm pretty sure they won't "Disneyfy" it as people would think.
They wouldn't turn this into the crappy Disney B-movies that are out there,
who knows it becomes the flagship-franchise of their live-action movies next to "Pirates of the Caribbean".
Were those movies not great in story and content in their own right? I mean, who knows how great and successful this could be.
I have a rather positive feeling about this, a fresh start and another chance and all that. So I'm very curious now.

But that's just my two Euro-cents...

People moaning about the fox and lucasfilm logos make me roll my eyes. I think some have even said it makes them not want to see future releases with the Disney logo. SERIOUSLY? If the rights had always belonged to Disney then the logo would have always been there. It's a good thing film logos don't affect anything, like make or break movies.

If Disney ends up re-releasing the movies on Blu-Ray, they've got a tough job to do. Do they just release the original versions, or the originals with the 1997, 2004 or 2011 special editions? I guess the simplest solution would be to release the original versions and use seamless branching to let people choose which special edition they would prefer to watch. The only way to please everybody, though, would be to let people order their own customized version of the movies (like going through a list of every change made and selecting which ones, if any, they prefer).

Yeah, people will complain no matter what.

There will be some that want the theatrical version, but with all the mistakes fixed (like Vaders white lightsaber), and some that want the theatrical version with all the mistakes and outdated effects kept in.

Mistakes and outdated effects? No offence but I hate what this implies. I just want the original film.

They could make the Jaguar E Type 20% more aerodynamic with today's technology, doesn't mean I'd want it though.

From a pragmatic perspective, I think it's crazy for people to want all different versions of these films to be available. For starters, it would put the prices through the roof, and would surely only serve to guarantee fairly slapdash output.

But yeah, it's easy enough for me to say, since I personally don't have much of an issue with Lucas' revisionism (the whole "who shot first?" thing aside) as many people seem to. My only real complaint is that Lucas' changes haven't been thorough or particularly consistent.

But if we end up with a BD release of these with the kind of transfers I think we should have gotten the first time round, then I'll be happy, at least as far as the existing flicks go.

As for any new ones, I'm not so sure. I personally think Disney lost both its grip and its storytelling mojo a long time ago, and a lot of people seem to say the same about Kathleen Kennedy, so my expectations for any new films that may come out of all this aren't high.

I'd love a set featuring the 1977/1980/1983 Cuts and the 2011 Cuts.

Best of both worlds.

Fox owns the original Star Wars (Ep. IV) distribution in perpetuity - meaning forever.
