Two characters: 3D
Until it is viable for the home, the theater has an opportunity. Gary P.S. The only reason I went into arcades was for pinball. That used to be mostly what they had. I plan to purchase Funhouse and Twilight Zone for myself, oneday. Last edited by dialog_gvf; 03-28-2008 at 04:31 PM. |

watching a movie at home just isn't the same experience. I think of when I saw Grindhouse in the theater. That was probably the most fun I've ever had in a theater, and it literally felt like I was watching that movie with 100 of my friends, even though I only knew one other person in the theater (that I know of). Even if Grindhouse came out as the whole thing instead of split up, it still wouldn't have been the same thing. There's just some movies you have to see in a theater (The Dark Knight comes to mind).

exactly like you said. theatres are adapting to appeal to the audiance more, and the example as i mentioned earlier I manage this brand new state of the art theatre, we have 7 digital projectors, 5 Disney digital projectors (3D) and finally an IMAX Theatre.

Why all the exclamation points, do you own a theater? If theater ticket sales decline enough, then they will release blu-ray/dvd movies much sooner than they are now. Maybe one day at the same time.

I dont go to the movies that mutch anymore. The Nearest movie theater near me is horrible.Filthy floors, the screens are coverd in filth. And the few times that I have been there, they had trouble getting there projectors to work. I went to see Spider-Man 3 there last summer and 10 minutes into the movie the projector died.It took them 10 minutes to get the movie up and running again. After I left that theater I vowed never to go back in there again.
Now I just wait for the movies to come out on Blu-Ray.It dont take very long for movies to come to Blu-Ray and DVD now. But I know come this summer I will be going back to the movies again.Cant miss out seeing the new Indy Movie on the big screen.Of course I will have to drive 60 miles to see it in a nice movie theater, but it will be worth it. |

i haven't read the whole thread yet but I just don't care if theatres go away or stay around for 300 more years. I can't really go to the theatre and enjoy a movie. I have a moderate to moderately severe hearing loss and have to use subtitles to really understand what is being said. Especially for darker movies, movies where the characters have accents or where a lot of dialogue is off screen. Heck, I can have trouble understanding people when they are right next to me sometimes. The last two movies I saw at the theatre was Batman Begins and Casino Royale. They were good movies. When I got them on DVD and was able to use subtitles, they turned into great movies.

i still like the theater experience with abotu 100 people watching the same movie as you. maybe the could upgrade those ancient reels into something a little more 21st century so we dont have all those friggin lines and what not across the screen. also a less stickier floor would be nice

IMO, it is unlikely that the commercial cinemas will be closed down due to home theaters.
The reasons are simple and were given many times in this thread 1. Cinemas are large, very large in comparison to home theater. I know if you sit closer to the screen you may get a similar effect as a larger screen. However, IMO, this will not compensate for absolute size of a very large screen. 2. The movie industry is mainly driven by commercial cinemas. Home theaters and blu ray is a secondary source of income for the studios. Unless there is a compelling business case, movies will not be released on blu-ray until they milk the market firstly through the cinemas. I cannot see any viable reasons to change this model. 3. Going to movies is a social activity for most families. And it is part of the global culture as well. I cannot see any compelling reasons to change this culture. Nevertheless, home theaters would give a very healthy competition to commercial cinemas, hence they will improve to attract more people and provide a different experience/ambiance to home cinemas. 1. Improvements to PQ/AQ will occur. For example, 2K DI would move to 4K and also 6K cannot be ruled out. This means very clear high quality picture on very large screens and blu-ray will not be a match for this. 2. Cinemas will improve the environment, seats, surrounding etc. to attract crowds. 3. Punctuality will be improved and waiting times reduced (with online bookings etc.) ……. |

we have some smaller theaters out here in NH called Chunky's and they serve food and beer during the movies. now the quality of the picture and surround sound are not that great, but once in a while its fun to go to. nothing beats blu's at home though.
i have 2 imax theaters within 25 miles of my home that are great. also have a nice stadium seating theater that is only a few years old about 5 minutes from my home. i do still enjoy seeing movies at the theater and i have a hard time thinking that they will ever go away. |
