I wonder why caps-a-holic haven't bothered to post their set of comparisons between the 2 Blu-Ray versions? They are generally all over this...

Maybe one of those German fellas is waiting on his 4K disc to arrive.

He'll probably return the faulty one to the store and get a refund instead of waiting a few days for Amazon to post out a replacement. If they're both faulty he'll return one to Amazon and try another one from the store.

Do you guys in the US have problems getting refunds in full for faulty goods? It's not like you know a disc is faulty before you open it.

Not sure why extras were not included when the film only takes up 31.3 or so GB, leaving nearly 20GB left untouched.

In most cases, you can only EXCHANGE a faulty disc with another. Refunds are only for unopened. This helps prevent people from copying a disc, and than returning it.

Wow. That's harsh! I've only experienced that once in the UK when my Alien Quadrilogy set had the wrong version of Aliens on the disc. The employee I spoke to said they have to test the disc when I brought it back after the gave the copying excuse. I wanted to ask if she'd know one version of Aliens from the other even if the Xenomorph bit her on her arse but I held my tongue.

Luckily I had the Aliens disc separate so I still have the wrong version in my box set. Usually I've had no problems with returns which have been opened. I can see BDs going down the PC Game route where you're screwed if they don't work because of compatibility issues. I hope they don't as it would be pretty awful if they did.

Correct. The only retailer I know of that gives full refund for opened media is Costco.

No, Amazon has one of the most lenient return policies of any store. The worst case scenario is he'd have to exchange the faulty one with Amazon, they'd send him a brand new one, and he'd have to return that one to Fry's unopened. Still, Amazon usually allows you to just return for a full refund straight away if the item is defective as long as they know you're not jerking them around, they even pay for shipping.... even though they state that DVD's/BD's must be "unopened" for a full refund (I've done it a few times... got one, opened it, it was F'ed up, and they’ve refunded me after I sent it back.... I've just had to call them and talk to them first.)

I'm having a problem with this new disc. It loads fine and my Denon receiver displays x.v color. It flickers when it switches over from the menu to the film and the image looks spectacular, but I'm only about 17 minutes into the movie and the screen has already flickered three times to a black screen. I've checked all of my cables and everything is fine. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? My receiver and UT50 are compatible. Turning Deep Color, 24p, etc. off and on does not change it. It always shows up x.v. color in the receiver information screen. Did I just get a bad disc maybe? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That sounds more like an equipment issue. Have you tried not playing it in that color setting to see what happens?

I stopped there cause I wanted to report it and see if anybody else has had the issue. I got my copy through Amazon. Physically, the disc is pristine. Anyhow, I quickly moved around other chapters just to see and this transfer is noticeably better. Colors are strong, grain is there and correct. Now it just seems I need to return this for a new copy. Bastards!

I posted a warning regarding this very issue last week as I experienced the exact same problem when playing the disc on my LG 620, any scene which seemed to top 40mbps caused the screen to black out (library card scene/proton pack first firing in hotel) yet the audio is unaffected, strangely it plays fine on my PC and PS3 so must be authord in a way that is causing issues with certain players, hopefully a firmware update will sort it in time.

WTF, it's doing the same thing at the same place on my new copy. Interestingly, I too have a Denon receiver.

Denon AVR-4310CI Receiver
Denon DBP-2010CI Blu-ray player
Panasonic P50V10 screen

This is BS!

Not BS, so much as it's just another thing that may need to be corrected by a firmware update. This sort of thing happens all the time, unfortunately.

It's not a receiver issue as I tried connecting my player directly to my TV and the black outs happened at exactly the same places, also tried several different HDMI cables.

I am certain it's a disc/player incompatibility, things like this will continue to happen as long as they keep changing their encoding and authoring methods, anyone remember the trouble some had with the Alien films/Star Wars films/Avatar/Prometheus etc

Sounds like a hardware issue, not a disc issue.

"Turning it off" where? In your receiver, your player, or your TV?
What player are you using? What RGB range is your player set to output now, because obviously your Denon thinks it's accepting a signal with an expanded RGB range hence the "x.v. color" on its display (which I believe is Sony's proprietary name for this new bullshit, or one of them at least - I know their new camcorders use it). Check any Deep Color / xvYCC / x.v. color / Expanded RGB setting on your BD player.

If you have a PS3 try setting "Deep color" to off, RGB to limited. I don't have a PS3, but anything within your PS3 (or Sony machine, assuming you have one) regarding "Deep Color", or expanded RGB, or xvYCC, or x.v. color, etc - turn those off. Any setting relating the the RGB / color gamut - make sure it says normal and not "full" or "expanded" in your player's settings.

It looks this new expanded color option could cause issues for you unless you're using Sony equipment designed specifically for it. If you're using a Sony player, it could be that it's compatible with this new expanded color gamut Sony bullshit and it's sending the signal along and it's confusing the two pieces of equipment further down in the chain (even though the Denon is recognizing it as "x.v color", which sounds about right, but it might not be cooperating with your UT50 either.)

See Here.
And Here.

Did you enable full-range RGB on your Panny thinking that would solve the problem? That might not be the best idea (I don't have a UT50 personally) based on what I've read. Set that to normal.

This is all assuming you don't use anything that utilizes the expanded RGB range (not sure if certain games do or anything, but no movies on BD apart from Ghostbusters and these new "mastered in 4K titles" do as far as I'm aware)... if Ghostbusters is the only thing you use that does it's kind of useless to have all those settings enabled if it won't allow you to play it properly with them on all (if that's even what's causing the problem).

Good to know I'm not alone I guess. My firmware is up to date on my Sony S590. I'll just be returning it to Amazon. I don't think it's the bitrate. I have had plenty of discs that have peaks above 40 mbps (Event Horizon and G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra for instance) that I never had playback issues on.

Well, I went to my parents house and played the disc on their low end model Panasonic BD player hooked straight to their low end model Sony LCD and it plays fine. So I went back and hooked my Denon straight to the Panny and now it plays fine. So, it's looking like the Denon receiver may very well be the culprit here. I'm going to try some other tests to rule out any other physical cable issues in the mix, but it seems the player and screen are talking to each other correctly when connected ONLY to each other. There could still be some setting being passed from the player to the receiver or some setting at the receiver level, but at least this is a start.
