You may then wonder why Palpatine wouldn't know, him being a bad Sith mother ****er, but if you cast your minds back to Return Of The Jedi it's revealed that Palps can't sense Luke in the same way that Vader can. That's a plot point firmly established in the OT, and Lucas is having a bit of retroactive fun by working it into Empire.

Heck, you could even argue it the other way, that Palpatine is testing Vader by "revealing" the identity of the son of Skywalker and gauging his reaction, knowing full well that Vader has been hunting Luke all along. Vader trying to pull the wool over his boss's eyes may have sealed Palps' decision to turn Luke for his own ends, as seen during the climactic duel in Jedi.

No, I think trying to infer subtlety and nuance into added scenes in the SE trilogy is an excercise in futility. Rather I think it's more likely sloppy dialogue, and at best it's simply unnecessary (which is my main objection with most of the SE edits).

IMO, of course.

Sure, I'm not arguing that it's necessary, but it adds an extra layer of intrigue to the Vader/Palpy relationship that may be of benefit to the occasional noob. Hardened SW nuts know exactly what's going on, so naturally it seems entirely superfluous to us.

Maybe "Skywalker" is just a really common name in thet galaxy, like "Smith".

Or maybe all the midichlorians have scrambled Vader's brain.
Or he thinks The Emperor is a moron. Or Lucas should just stay away from the typewriter.

Default Dumb question...

I know I could read and get the answer but I am standing in Best Buy and they have the whole set for $69 and the two trilogies for $29 each. If you buy the two trilogies instead of the complete Saga are you missing out on any extras or anything or is it just the packaging? TIA

Or maybe it just makes Vader the "Dark lord of the Smith".

@zoso: I believe there are additional extras in the complete saga.

The Emperor knew who Luke was in the original version. He knew who Anakin was, and knew who Luke was. "The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi." He didn't call him "your son" because they were trying to retain the surprise at the end of the movie. Now with that famous surprise ruined by the Prequels, they revised the dialog.

have to agree with this. part of the problem with the prequels is that it changes so many things in the original trilogy. Look at Obi-Wan telling Luke about his father - in the original version, it is a lie but you can buy into his excuse about it being a matter of perspective because we didn't know the whole story. now, it is just a flat out lie. they should have revised the prequels to match the original movies more than go into the original movies and make changes so it matched the new movies. the changes in the Emperor/Vader scene were so unneccessary which makes them even worse.

There is one disc of extra content that's exclusive to the complete saga set. That's the only reason I got the complete saga instead of the two trilogies since I like the artwork on the trilogy sets a lot better.

Actually their is 3 extra discs of content for the saga box set versus buying the trilogies individually. Seeing that amazon can't keep this box set in stock at $69.99 only tells me anyone who has delusions that set will dip below $50 at black Friday can keep dreaming. People always seem to forget this is Star Wars and their will always be demand for Star Wars and people will be always be willing to pay top $$$. At $11.66 a movie consider this one of the best deals you will get in a while...

That's true, but for some of us it isn't a race. I have these on DVD and have the BD's in my Netflix que. I'll check out and see how the transfer looks, but for now I'll be content on what I have. I'm in no hurry.

I just picked up a mint condition set on eBay the other week for $50 shipped...watched them then resold for $65

Just thought I'd fill in the "$69.99 price is as good as its gonna get for a while" crowd. Yea...check ebay. Works wonders

As far as the dialogue between the emperor and Vader goes, technically even before that, Vader shouldn't even know who Skywalker is, let alone that he blew up the Death Star. And how is it that the Emperor knows? I suppose it was Imperial spies?

I always assumed he knew through the force because he knew what Anakin's presence felt like in the force. So when Palpatine felt the Death Star explode he felt through the force that it was Anakin's son.

You're right of course; I'm still thinking of it as a three movie kinda deal. But for a prequel viewer the reveal is blown anyway, so Lucas decided to use that angle to drive the wedge (no pun intended) further between Vader and his master.

Besides, it's not the dialogue changes that bother me most about that scene, it's the terrible performance from Ian McDiarmid. The Emperor is almost catatonic, displaying neither the cool malice of the old woman/monkey eyes/Clive Revill combo, nor the gleeful theatricality of McDiarmid's own 1983 iteration of the character. It's just so.........dull.

I always just assumed it was word of mouth. Let's face it, if a lone pilot in an x-wing blew up the empire's most advanced battle weapon by chucking a torpedo down a shaft with a 2-meter opening, I think the guy's name would get around pretty quick.

I just bought the OT trilogy set because it was far cheaper and I could access some of the special features on YouTube of which I made a playlist for. The Complete Saga Collection includes 3 films I don't like (although I do own episode 1 on Laserdisc), and its still quite expensive..

You can get the Saga for $69.99 at Best Buy and Amazon. The Trilogies are lower now too at $29.99 each
