Ya, I sort of left them out because their payroll has been more or less flat (or somewhat declining) for many years. But honestly the Yankees suffered from the same problem. Once their payroll skyrocketed (in the early 2000's, just after the 3-peat) with pricey free agents who often ended up busts they only won one championship. It's very difficult to buy a championship in MLB.

Yeah but even at their worst in 2008 they weren't at the level those three teams you mentioned are at.

Same happened with the Mets in the late 90s/early 00s, though they had the occasional good team. But they have had lots of bad years while paying guys ridiculous amounts.
