Haha! I still have the (b&w) Marvel comic novelization. It's awesome... a humanoid Jabba, and Biggs deleted scenes! Almost like having the original screenplay...

Oh, I get it. He was implying that our ideas were good ones and the studios ones were not? I thought he was being sarcastic! Whoops indeed.

Sorry stvn!

Yes, I have all those editions too. I have all of the Marvel comics run, and the big ANH adaption issue.

If Disney decide to do a super ultra mega Star Wars set, I hope they remaster The Phantom Menace too.

You can tell that the current Blu-Ray transfer was sourced from a really high quality HD master. The transfer could have been and should been stunning but the heavy DNR ruins it, we're talking Predator level DNR here.

I know it was probably intentional so that the film looked more digital but it was a stupid decision imo.

But I must say, even with the DNR, it looks miles better than the DVD transfer. That transfer was ghastly.

I thought TPM looked good. The early CG always had that weird sheen to it.

True, but the live action scenes looked amazing.

I personally thought the DNR was more noticeable in the live action scenes compared to the CGI scenes.

The scenes that really stood out to me were the royal dresses that the Queen had. They looked amazing.

Most of the VFX work in Phantom Menace still holds up very well indeed. John Knoll mentioned how difficult it was to get the CG elements blended with the anamorphic distortion of the live-action plates, but I think they did a stunning job. The real locations/sets and tons of model shots do their part too. It's just a shame that this work is undermined by the haphazard DNR on the Blu-ray.

Yeah most of the FX look good on PM still, but man did they drop the ball with Attack of the Clones! At least by the time Sith came out that got the digitial cameras right.

I don't mind the diffuse PQ of Clones' live-action shots, but yeah, the effects look much too sharp and shiny. And they couldn't quite nail the depth of field with the new cameras when shooting the model backgrounds, so even those shots look forced and fake. As you say, everything kinda fell in line for Sith because it looks much, much better.

Yeah, the F/X in clones remind me of playing with color forms when I was a kid. It's like everything just sticks out so much (like Dooku on the swoop bike thing toward the end) that it looks like they were just pasted in there with very little care.
